I assume they treat Raul Julia with kid gloves again, both because this was his last role and that he is just about the best thing in the movie.

For those people here who saw “Street Fighter” theatrically, the video release has a post-credit sequence.

    Here’s some additional information.

    From Wikipedia:

Raúl Juliá’s performance as M. Bison, however, was widely praised and garnered him a posthumous nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Saturn Awards…The film was also Julia’s final theatrical performance, as he died of a stroke two months before the film’s release; the film is dedicated to his memory.

    From IMDb.com:

Raul Julia accepted the role of M. Bison because his children were fans of the Street Fighter games, and he wanted to participate in a film that he thought they would enjoy with him.

According to cast and crew, Jean-Claude Van Damme was not easy to work with, due to a combination of professional ego and substance abuse. Being the biggest star on the film, van Damme got a presidential hotel suite with a gym put into his room, but he would often refuse to come out of the hotel or his trailer until he felt ready. When he did come out, he would often bring alcohol to the set, or take hours to shoot his scenes. By contrast, everyone loved Kylie Minogue, praising her for her professionalism and generosity, such as hiring a club and buying drinks for the entire cast and crew to make the tough shoot a little easier. There was equal praise for Raul Julia, who was accompanied by his family due to being terminally ill with stomach cancer; despite his declining health and frail state, everyone thought that Julia was always focused, and was a joy to work with.

    From IMDb.com:

Writer/director Steven deSouza also played the arcade game with his kid, and loved putting homage/easter-eggs in the movie. That’s how you make a GOOD (or comparatively good) videogame-movie.
I learned that from the director commentary. From the Blu-ray. That I own. And can quote from memory. (Uh, the movie, not the commentary.)

And yes, JCVD’s ego was reportedly convinced he was in a “serious” action thriller about HIM. That’s actually part of the fun, since he’s taking the movie so unironically, he’s as all-in to the movie as Kylie, Raul and the rest of the cast.

    Kenneth Morgan:
I assume they treat Raul Julia with kid gloves again, both because this was his last role and that he is just about the best thing in the movie.

I assume, that in their desperate, neurotic search to be loved by their fans, they picked up any movie with a cheap pop-cultural “Bad movie” reputation, and don’t really know the difference.
(They wouldn’t really sink to SciFi-kissup Overdrawn at the Memory Bank jokes, um……………would they?)

Raul, is, however, a hoot. Like watching Gomez Addams on his campaign of world conquest:
“They call me a ‘madman’…Why? All I want to do is create the perfect genetic soldier!”

    Eric J.:

Since you own the Blu-ray, you can download Rifftrax’s “Just the Jokes” for just $3.99 and see for yourself.

As for JCVD, here’s another tidbit about “Street Fighter” from IMDB.com.

Jean-Claude Van Damme revealed later that during filming, he had a drug problem (doing $10,000 worth of cocaine a week) and an affair with Kylie Minogue. Director Steven E. de Souza confirmed in 2018 that van Damme’s cocaine addiction caused constant disruptions during filming. The studio had hired a wrangler to keep an eye on van Damme, but this person was a bad influence himself. The action star would often call in sick, leave the set, show up late or not at all, forcing de Souza to find other scenes to film, in order to make up for lost time.

We’re all familiar with how Raul Julia dingled his fingal in Overdrawn a the Memory Bank. Writer/Director Steven de Sousa was story editor on Gemini Man, later edited together into Riding with Death. Also, a significant percentage of the actors had appeared on the TV series Time Trax.

Julia also got one of the best lines made for putting a presumptuous protagonist in their place: “For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.”

I too saw the movie in the theater, and IMHO it deserves every bit of its “bad movie” reputation. Not that it didn’t have a few good things going for it, including Raul Julia’s performance. But all in all, it was still a moronic, forgettable movie very, very loosely based on a mindless video game.

Wes Studi–with as uncrackable a deadpan as he showed in “Mystery Men”–is also sportingly all-in as eyepatched kickboxer Sagat, and Julia gets his other great line off of him when outwitted by JCVD’s plan:
“He was only faking his death! (covers one eye) Or didn’t you SEE that?”

One of the lost quotable of the early 90’s. :)
From the riffs, however, seems like the RT crowd went searching for Fan-Reputation Bad Movie #623, dug up a lot of online gamer-fan comments about “Chun-Li’s a reporter? That sucks!”, and crafted the “Disappointing the fans” riffs accordingly, with the strategically inserted “Super Mario Bros.” movie references.
After all, professional stand-up comics in their late 50’s and early 60’s don’t really sound like 14-yo. junior high gamer kids, um……..do they?

I’ve noticed that posts criticizing Eric often receive more likes than there are participants in a conversation, proving that there are many more people reading this forum than are commenting on it. Maybe if each and every one of us contacted Sampo separately to complain, Eric would get the heave-ho at last. But probably not. Shrug.

So…I’m not following: Is the problem that it IS based on a video game that “you couldn’t turn into a movie”, or that it changed everything to become a movie and WASN’T based on the video game?

(It’s usually the “legend” bad movies from the 80’s and 90’s that have their legends handed down geek-father-to-son to the 00’s and 10’s, to a new generation that can’t really say why they’re supposed to be “bad’, everyone just, y’know, knows that they are. They used to say that about Clue and Speed Racer, too.)

Or, that the same three regulars keep neurotically harping on it over and over, to the thread-destroying exclusion of all else, when any ONE sentence in a four or five-paragraph post even dares to speak heresy about Rifftrax, as all good posters must speak well of, for its continued health, wealth and prosperity:

blahblahblah I remember this movie blahblahblah not too bad blahblahblah dang, Raul was a hoot blahblahblah RT really phoned this one in–

Contacting Sampo won’t help; I’ve tried. We all need to contact Brian Henry (his email is on the main page) and do it until things are fixed here. Either ban the troll — as every other forum does — or have a working ignore button. Email every week if necessary. No wonder this site is losing members and participation. If nothing is done I call for a boycott.

My apologies if this posts twice… oh, and we also need the edit button back. Why was it ever removed?

I know I should be better and do better but I’m sick of having every Rifftrax thread pissed on because of the troll’s irrational hatred of Mike, Bill, and Kevin. Maybe he’s got a secret h***-on for them, I dunno, but the vitriol is completely out of proportion. How difficult is it not to click on a thread if you’re not interested in the contents?

Apparently we can call others all kinds of names, be insulting, tell someone to commit suicide, use profanity, and on and on here. I don’t know of any other decent discussion boards that allow that, and maybe after who knows how many years, this is no longer the place for me. Neither I nor anyone else should have to hold our noses when we open a thread, even an “In Memoriam” one (and the troll pisses on those too).

A working Ignore button would be great and would solve the problem without an outright ban. This is a WordPress site and I know from experience that it CAN be done.

Well, let’s just call it what it is – an outright hatred and jealousy, specifically of Mike’s (and generally of Rifftax’s) success.

Is he still a tired, worn out remnant of the decades old Usenet “Joel v. Mike” flame wars? I suggest it goes further than that; he drips with disdain regarding Mike, even on (as others have noted) a memorial post for the thoroughly decent and much beloved Jack Perkins. This, of all posts he’s done, clearly shows his trolling in action.

He occasionally sprinkles in posts that almost seem normal and topical, but that’s just camouflage; he has shown himself time and time again to be, one assumes, a basement dwelling troll who spends his days picking apart other peoples’ support of something, all while denying he does that very thing.

He’s basically Winky in his mother’s basement in “Manhunt in Space”, but much less accomplished in life. And with wayyyy more empty pizza boxes.

This happens to me fairly often, actually. I’ve found that one of the best ways to stymie “trolls” — second to straightforward civility; in my experience civility usually frightens and confuses “trolls” because it’s an utterly alien concept to them — is to ask them in all sincerity to further explain their position and then learn that it turns out that they don’t actually know how to do that.

Leaving me to in so many words remark “Just remember, a [member from “the opposite”] side actually asked to be “enlightened” on your position and you refused.” Is that a burn? It might be a burn. I don’t know much about burns.

Does that make them look into the deep dark truthful mirror of their stringy hearts? Well, it’s a possibility

Of course, Eric doesn’t troll just me but everyone else in here (some of whom find him annoying enough to repeatedly offer him hostility in return when, the truth is, Eric knows that everyone else in here dislikes him (although I myself am coming down from my “disgust” high and will soon again consider him the barest blip as I usually do, until he does that condescending “teach us the error of our ways” thing again). He knows no one is interested in what he has to say (except on this one occasion me).

In the meantime, I recommend watching “The House of Fear” (1945) on YouTube — if you’ve seen MJ&B’s riff of “The Woman in Green” you can have fun throwing out your own amateur riffs.

They seem to riff way more of those than public domain films, though. Which is odd because it’d be much easier to release DVDs/Blu-Rays/whatever of public domain films.

I mean, seriously, film studios used to churn out hundreds of cheap films by the month — westerns, gangsters, romances, mysteries, serials, and so on, and so on, and so forth, for every “Teenage Crime-Wave,” High School Big Shot,” and “Racket Girls,” there were dozens more — there were near-countless opportunities for dropping the ball on copyright and/or copyright renewal, especially if filmmakers Just Didn’t Care; no one (or at least very, very, very few people) in the 1930s could have possibly anticipated that people would still be interested in their quickly/badly films nearly a hundred years later. But whatever. I could go on and on and in fact have already done so. ;-)

All the way at the bottom, in the fine print. I’ve tried posting it but the site won’t let me. Obviously, there are safeguards on this site that prohibit the posting of email addresses (which is fine)… but we can’t get a working ignore button???

I consider myself to be the kind of person who can see/understand all (or most) points of view, even if I don’t agree with them. But I just can’t get why some people WASTE valuable time in their short lives reading and posting about things they hate (I’ve seen it on Yahoo, IMDb, several wikis, TV tropes, and here of course). I’m not talking about disagreeing with something and posting a reasonable argument; what I don’t get is the vitriol, bitterness, jealousy, and hatred. Is it some kind of bullying mentality? Is it some deep unhappiness that can’t let others enjoy themselves or be happy? I guess these people are what keeps psychiatrists in business.

((sigh) …Seriously. You ACTUALLY think this is because of the hosts?RT makes a starving, public-domain dancing-monkey fool of itself three times a week, and you think it’s because they changed hosts fifteen years ago?
I got my work cut out for me.:/ )

Oh, no, no honey. No, just go f*ck yourself. That’s all you have to do, k bye.

Enh enh, won’t somebody mourn my tiny penis?

Mike once refused to make out with me in a Holiday Inn parking lot, and I’ve NEVER forgiven him for it.

Of course, Rifftrax panders to the lowest form of fan service by making me mock those who are sad about old actors who are dead so I have to teach people how to overcompensate for their character flaws and effuliate big words like mayonnaise and refrigerator to make me sound smart I’m so smart digital media is a hoax just like my genitals my blog rant I miss my Google+ page why won’t somebody come to Massachusetts and kick my ass once and for all probably because of my tiny penis. SOB!

So Rifftrax acts foolish. It’s a COMEDY site. That’s like complaining that your computer tech acts nerdy.

Well, if they acted foolish, it would be a lot more fun. It’s the acting lazy, negative, cynical, and almost contemptuous of its own fans, except for its clinging need to cultivate a cult-of-personality of ex-SciFi fans, that makes it a chore to watch. They’re off the “Bully cult” of beating up on Tolkien, Transformers and Marvel, once the cheap weird stuff started becoming bigger sellers, and now they’re down to scraping up whatever’s not nailed down.
The cable and Netflix MST3K episodes could go out and either hit or flop, since there’d always be the next one for free, but with every RT trying to sell itself like a late-nite vegetable slicer, It’s a little, well, EMBARRASSING watching their Bill or intern-written title descriptions go hysterical over whatever public-domain title they dumpster-dove out of Amazon Prime, trying to make it sound like it’s the next Mr. B. Natural:
“‘A Little Princess’, not to be confused with ‘A Miniature Potentate’!”…”‘This is the Army’, not to be confused with ‘That, Over There in the Corner is the Ohio National Guard’!”

Well, that’s oversimplifying somewhat. Think it’s more in the ballpark of “Only high schoolers worry about not being socially accepted by other high schoolers.”

If we’re the “high schoolers” and you’re the one hanging around us feeling all negative and cynical and contemptuous (no “almost” on that), what does that make YOU?

    On another note…

Seriously, how does anyone have as much bile as Eric does for Mike (and not just Rifftrax but absolutely everything he’s involved in), a total stranger, an ACTOR that he’s only seen on TV and in film? Is there some larger context I’m unaware of? Have Eric and Mike in fact met in real life? Did Mike wreck Eric’s car, get him fired, break his heart, OSLT? Someone check the backstory database stat…

Since no one’s volunteered anything on this, I’m presuming that no such backstory database information is available. Okay.

Yet the larger question remains: how does Eric have so much bile for (now that I know it’s not just Mike that he hates) total strangers, ACTORS that he’s only seen on TV and in film? Seems like a sign of actual no-kidding mental illness to me.

I still have the whole “interest…fading…” thing going on, though, so the question might have downgraded itself to “rhetorical” after all. But whatever.

Well, you don’t get to dictate terms, either. ;-)

Still, I suppose that I’ve stopped UNLESS he responds further to me (maybe even if he does, but definitely if he doesn’t). So it’s in his court now…
