Well, I’m satisfied. Seems the show is in good hands, and while it’s disappointing news about Final Sacrifice, I’ll keep focusing on the good and the beautiful.
*sob*
(Great interview though. Thanks, all!)
Lots of good info in there. I feel assured that the fate of MST DVDs are in more than capable hands.
This was terrific, thanks a bunch! Not only does Jordan seem passionate about the show, his responses were candid, thoughtful and entertaining. Just hurry up and give me my Servo, Crow is getting lonely.
Great interview and great answers. Shout! Factory and Jordon seem like they really care about delivering the show to fans. This makes me very optomistic about future releases. Keep up the great work!
Love the fact the he responded in such a candid, no bull**** manner. Great job and keep up the good work.
OOHH I hope that rereleasing thing was a joke. I don’t want to see time wasted releasing another copy of pod people when we can get a copy of robot monster.
Excellent! Good to see the distribution of the show is in such dedicated, capable hands. Sampo, any chance of including this quote:
whenever a new set is announced to (hopefully) quell the tide of “why didn’t they include X instead of Y?” posts?
(although I, too, am greatly saddened by the apparent unavailability of The Final Sacrifice… Then again, the Tom Servo bust news is certainly good, and I’ve got to look into that Firesign Theater set…)
All in all, 5 thumbs up!
It always amazes me how the rights holders to a film that nobody else would even pay money for keep holding out.
It’s not like Criterion is going to come knocking!
Very cool stuff.
Thanks again to everyone who made that Q&A possible and thanks to Jordan and company for putting such great effort and attention into these DVD releases!
 Looks like Jordan Fields is a walking ROCKET #9!!!
Good interview. Glad he’s listening to us so well.
Good interview and all but i really, really, REALLY wanted some news about rights to the Season 3 epsiodes. Humbug!
Nice to hear him mention William Grefe. I love his films (i really hope CT does a riff on his movie, The Pyschedelic Generation. It’s a great movie, primo riffing material, and shares some of the cast and sets of Wild Rebels!). His commentaries on the Something Weird discs are wildly funny and informative and it’s really nice to hear he enjoyed MST3K doing his film. Grefe kicks arse.
Professor – Amen to the Psychedelic Generation. That movie is a trip and then some! Dig, baby!
Wait, is that the Hooked Generation?
Aye. It is. I was mixing up the title with the other film on that SW disc, The Psychedelic Priest. Good call.
I’m sure that some of us are already trying to find Indoamerica.
I hear what he’s saying about the ktma eps, its basically the same attitude joel has towards them–but I love the ones I’ve seen so far, and would buy every one of them!
Gracious thanks, Jordan!!
VERY Informative interview, the list of complications in obtaining rights is fascinating and frustrating!
Keep up the great work on the sries – we’re glad to know it’s in a real fans hands! Thanks for your work on the Firesign Theater Stuff too!!!!
I will say that I about died of sorrow upon reading the “quark” chance The Final Sacrifice has about coming on to DVD. It’s very near and dear to me.
…But I kept on reading and was very pleased and amused to see my question about the illustrations was answered. Thanks Mr. Fields for indulging my art nerd!
that’s interesting about the pumaman rights. I had actually seen the movie broadcasted un-mystied on the philadelphia NBC affiliate back in the early nineties. Wonder if they have a source???
With XV and going forward, we’re putting chapters at all commercial breaks and before and after host segments.
Thank you, thank you!
Wow, MST3K is in really good hands. I’m just glad that SF cares so much about doing the sets right. I’ll take any episodes from any seasons and still be happy. That includes any full KTMA episodes.
Echoing what seems to be the consensus – it sounds like the home video future of MST3K couldn’t be in better hands. Thanks, Jordan.
It’s a huge bonus for us to have a fellow fan so involved in an influential post at Shout! Factory.
And that’s hard to do after six sour-cream burritos.
Mitchell!
Good feedback. That’s the kind of person that’s good to have handling the dvds and whatnot.
I was happy to get good answers…
I was not happy about the Lipperts, looks like those arent in the cards at this time or Final Sacrifice – those who want Final Sacrifice are as upset as I am about no Lippert movies…
I was intrigued by his comment about re releasing Rhino Episodes.. I wouldn’t mind if they re released The Atomic Brain with the Stinger or a better transfer of the Dead Talk Back …
Nothing mentioned about Season 3…can someone get a hold of Josh so we can find out more about Gamera , Corman and Bert I Gordon ??
To echo some other posters, I’m very glad to see that the show is in very intelligent, passionate hands. Great interview.
First of all, thanks to Mr. Fields for answering the questions so candidly and completely. He really does seem to care about the show and the releases. (He even answered a question I had that I don’t think was asked – about why the switch to Roman Numerals).
As I so often find myself doing, however, I feel the need to come to the defense of the KTMA episodes. I did not like hearing that he only sees them as viable as an “extra”.
Now, if that means he doesn’t think it likely that they will be able to get the rights and KTMA material will be relegated to bits and pieces in featurettes, then fine.
But if he honestly means that if Shout found themselves in posession of the rights to release the MST3K “Cosmic Princess” episode, for instance (chosen for this illustration because it’s my favorite, not because it is likely), that they wouldn’t treat that as a legitimate episode in the set? They’d toss it on as an extra?
Heck, he says himself that most fans haven’t seen the KTMA episodes. It would be the *main draw*, not something “extra”.
Season one of Saturday Night Live is very different from the seasons that followed. The first few episodes, in fact, bear little resemblance to the show even a few months later. This is but one example. There are plenty of shows whose early episodes (or late ones if the show was on long enough) are not up to snuff creatively or out of synch stylistically with the rest of the run. But these “out of character” episodes are not treated with the strange lack of respect that the KTMA episodes have to endure.
There are 22 episodes from the KTMA era. They are the foundation on which the show as we know it was built. They deserve the same treatment that any other episode would receive if they can be cleared.
*end of rant*
Oh, and just to be clear, other than that one issue (which I realize I am a bit sensitive to), I think they’ve got their priorities straight over at Shout! and I commend their efforts.
I don’t know how practical this would be, but since a lot of people want to see Final Sacrifice on DVD and (apparently) one person is against this…
Maybe someone could organize a letter-writing campaign? If we could get the address of Lippert’s office or something. I mean, I doubt it could hurt.
That as a great interview. So there’s no chapter selections to save money for other xtras. I’m cool wth that. I rarely use the skip option anyway, so nothing lost there.
A lot of MSTies don’t seem to realize that there probably will never be a full KTMA episode released due to some THICK movie rights issues.
Why do they eventually want to re-release Rhino’s episodes? It’s not like they need to add a lot of episode specific extras, and I can’t imagine that I would ever buy a box without 4 new-to-dvd episodes… even a 3 new/1 already released box set would be a box set I skip.
That was a good, thorough set answers. It’s a shame that scene selections are so complicated to make.
I think the rights holder of Final Sacrifice needs some Mace Mousse in the face.
Seriously, who do these people think they are? They are being offered money for a movie that they are just sitting on.
thank you.
I second Rex Dart’s idea. A *polite* letter-writing campaign could be really effective in getting Final Sacrifice released if anybody is able to find the correct contact information. And while we’re at it, let’s write letters to all of the other reluctant rights-holders we can locate. It’s high time we put the fancy stationary sets our moms bought us for our fifteenth birthdays to good use!
Great information! While the Final Sacrifice, Lippert and Film Crew updates are bummers, it is nice to know that we have such a knowledgable and passionate person representing us (and Shout! Factory too) to these strange people who own the rights to these films.
Thank you, Mr. Fields, for all of your hard work. If there is anything we can do to help you out (or get you a raise) please feel free to let us know.
I was very surprised to hear about FINAL SACRIFICE, and the odd situation with the Lippert films (how the hell did that happen?). Looks like PUMA MAN is just as elusive as I found it (being a foreign production doesn’t help), but it’s great to hear the big-studio titles are more likely now.
I’ve updated my Likelihood List to reflect all this new info!

Very nice straight talk from Jordan Fields. Thanks to Mr. Fields for taking the time to answer these questions. Interestingly, some of the questions were on my list of things I’d like to ask if I had the chance, so I got a lot of info I wanted out of this article.
Disappointing about Final Sacrifice.
I LIKE IT VERY MUCH!
And a nice plus they’re considering
closed captions.
That was a very good interview, although it left me alittle depressed thinking about the difficulties of attaining certain titles that I enjoyed MST riffing. Jordan Fields is definitely the right person for this job; if the goal is to release as many MST3K titles as possible, you need someone with a passion for the show to reach that goal.
Can we do a petition for the Lippert Season 2 films as well as Final Sacrifice ?
201 is the debut of Frank after all !
I second all of the suggestions of a letter-writing campaign to the rights-holders of the Lippert films and Final Sacrifice. A capital idea!
Second, a hearty thank you and a big pat on the back to Mr. Fields. I only want to add my voice to the chorus saying that MST3K’s DVD present (and future) is in not only good, but excellent hands.
I know some people don’t like the idea of re-releases of Rhino stuff, but given I’m one of the poor so-and-sos who missed Vol. 9 and doesn’t want to have to pay one MILLION dollars on eBay for it, a re-release of the episodes they have the rights to would be welcome.
Having said that, I love both the respect and care that Shout! is putting into the show and love what they are doing. Thanks a bunch for that and the great interview!
I’m in for whatever you guys want to do!
And thanks a lot for the great answers to our host of questions.
Matt Periolat #43.
Just FYI- Netflix had the season 9 episodes availablefor rental as of a couple of months ago.
I hope they reconsider on the KMTA episodes and start releasing them in full on up coming DVD sets. I’d far prefer that then to have re-releases of what Rhino already put out.
Letter writing is always a good idea. If someone could be really respectful and persuasive and write to the rights holder of “Final Sacrifice” letting him know how MST has brought attention to his movie and given him fans who’d otherwise have probably never heard of him…
And we’d all need to sign it so the rights holder could see the sheer volume of people who are clamoring for it, so it’d maybe be a good idea to post the letter on one of those petitioning sites where people could sign it electronically.
As for the Lippert films, I’m not sure, but wasn’t there already a Warner Brother’s film that was MSTied and on DVD?
Anyway, I think it’s true that perhaps we as fans could be more proactive about helping get rights for Shout Factory with respectful letter writing and detective work.
So anyway – who’s a good letter writer? Maybe the guys here at Satellite News would be willing to accept letter submissions, post them, and let us vote on the best one?
Would the rights holder for Final Sacrifice appreciate a disc that featured an un-mstied cut as well? I don’t know if Shout Factory would consider that or not, either. If the feeling of the copyright holder (the director, I’m assuming) is that MST misrepresented the film, it would give the film probably the best chance of being seen by the most people…
Bob(NotThatBob), I know Catalina Caper was a Warner Bros. film, released early on in Rhino’s run, so there ya go! Shame about Final Sacrifice and the Lippert movies (It seems that the ACEG entry on Radar Secret Service captures the attitudes of rights holders dead-on) but after reading this interview I’m left with a new appreciation for how monumentally difficult it is to track down the rights for some of the films. Kudos to Mr. Fields and all the folks at Shout!Factory for giving us more of the show we love.
Bob(NotThatBob) – Maybe we could get Jimmy from I Accuse My Parents to write a petition letter for us. You know, the whole school’s been buzzing about the essay he wrote!
