Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite Running Gags

Alert regular Jay writes:

Although it seems like one of those ideas that somebody MUST have already come up with I haven’t come across it in the records so here goes: Running Gags. They have always been an MST staple. What is your favorite? Season 11 had its share, as well. There must be plenty of favorites out there.

I know one: “sampo!”

Have at it!

Rice a pipple. It started in The Bride of the Monster and they were still saying a variation of it by season 10 when Mike makes a “rice a verms” during Squirm.

“Sweet Freedom” – Alex the Chimp from Carnival Magic, said every time it looked she he was attempting to flee the set.

From Rifftrax: “Line?” from the many Twilight movies. I had a girlfriend almost fall off her chair when she first heard this.

Do you mean gags running through one episode, or ones that go on through multiple episodes? For the former, since we just had Soultaker under discussion, I laughed whenever they said “—- taker!,” such as “Bus Taker!” and “Leak Taker!” I know it’s dumb but it struck me as funny. For the latter, I love it whenever Torgo shows up. Because he’s Torgo.

“It stinks!” whenever someone makes the okay sign with their hand. I saw Joel use it to great effect in Cinematic Titanic’s ‘Rattlers’ live and it got a huge audience response.

    “BITE ME” –

A phrase that is now part of the ages. I used it on my older brother once when he teased me over supper about a childhood dislike of salads. Of course, he hasn’t spoken to me since, but such is life. Bite me!

Yeah, I was going to ask about the ground rules too. The whole “Brick Hardcheese!” bit in Space Mutiny is funny if it’s the guys starting to take their own improvisational ball in the episode and run with it; on a t-shirt, though, not so much.
The same goes for the library of Robert Ludlum books (“The Mingmang Patingtang!”) in “Being From Another Planet”: https://www.mst3kinfo.com/ward_e/List405.html

As for series-wide gags, the “…SLEEEEP!!” gags every time a character says they’re tired just sort of appeared out of nowhere, but cracks me up every time.

(Oh, and where is that city?)

Great choices all! “Watch out for snakes!”, “I wet ’em!” & “Big McLargehuge (etc.)” are my all time faves. These and “Bite me!” have entered my own personal lexicon. (“Dickweed”, too, which must be a Midwesternism, but I never heard it till MST3K.) I would like to add: “Snausages!” in “The Painted Hills”; the sarcastic rendition of the 007 theme (“BAA DA DA DAAAA!”) in “The Agent from H.A.R.M.”; and the “good & the beautiful” speech in “Phantom Planet”. (Plus one other that I forgot between the kitchen and here. I’ll be back . . . )

    Featured in numerous episodes:

“My boss! Always (insert crazy situation here)!” – For those younger MSTies, this is a “Hart to Hart” reference.

“Saigon. I can’t believe I’m still in Saigon.” – insert other places here.

“No one will be seated during the breathtaking ____ scene.”

“Look familiar, Mike?” – whenever someone unflattering appears

“You’re so evil.” “Thaaaank you!” – said in pretty much every season 1 episode

    “Shut up, Iris.”

“Ford Beebe!” (repeated quickly and excitedly) – Before all “The Phantom Creeps” segments

    Featured in specific episodes:
-I Accuse My Parents: Jimmy’s birthday and essay being brought up in various contexts; the quacking when the duck painting appears in the background
-The Final Sacrifice: Troy’s lameness ; Zapp’s drunkenness
-Codename: Diamond Head: Imitating the background music
-Agent for HARM: “Ba da BA-DAH!!!”
-Space Mutiny: Santa Claus references ; the obligatory mention of Dave Ryder’s nicknames
    -Fugitive Alien: “Rocky!” “A-gain??”
