Wow, a lot of work went into that.

A few shades of blue version of what we saw on Vol. 14. I like it actually. I like blue
Think blue :)

Color me underwhelmed. :???:

Good thing I don’t care about covers, since I have a 200 disc holder specifically for my MST3K eps.

It’s funny how some people are disappointed with the box art. After seeing volume XIV this is exactly what I expected volume XV to look like. It’s weird to expect anything different.
I’m not sure why people scoff at the cover art like it’s a huge part of the release, anyway. For any true fan, it’s not the cover art that matters, it’s the episodes and special features that do.
Personally, I like it. It’s consistent with the previous release and it’s simple. Unlike the convoluted Rhino covers/discs.
Keep ’em coming Shout Factory!

Yeah, I have to agree with Joey Joe Joe. Rhino’s covers always looked so… busy. Not even busy in a good way, e.g. chock full of visual ‘in jokes’ that MSTies would get. Just busy as in cluttered and confused. So, compared to that, I think Shout Factory’s covers are sleek and sassy, as TV’s Frank might say.

The Rhino covers were excellent! The Shout Factory ones are too simplistic. I can’t think of a single other tv series whose boxed sets all have identical covers. If the idea of similar covers is to keep production costs down, then why are the sets as expensive as the Rhino sets? I dunno. The new covers seem “generic”.
As for the content: Woo hoo! Four eps I’ve never seen! And cool bonus stuff too!

Steve Vil: The DVD release of Transformers G1 by Rhino’s covers were basically the same…silver covering…but they slowly had an Autobot Logo forming on the front as time went on.

 It doesn’t matter to me either way because I’m not buying it for the cover.Only the episodes and the extras.Yet blue is nice.

Am I the only one who just does not give a flying toss about the cover art? Just keep the episodes coming and I’m a happy bunny.

As long as they get released, the cover could be blank for all I care. All my episodes are in those Josh Way slimline covers.
I have to admit, though, that the labels on the DVDs themselves got pretty fun near the end of Rhino’s run. Very quirky.
One more thing–I originally started boxing the releases individually because I had two DVDs from early Rhino volumes crack because of the goofy hub in the packaging. They were kind enough to replace them, but it was something I wanted to avoid happening again. Shout!s choice of the slim cases is much more to my liking.

Im not a stickler for cover art, but I do love all that blue.
Consider blue

Can’t we all just be happy with Shout!’s superior release schedule thus far?

Ahh, SO much better than Rhinos disgustingly terrible covers. Thank you Shout!

I DON’T CARE, BUT I DO LIKE IT. BUT KIND OF FUNNY THOUGH BECAUSE MY BOX WILL GO IN THE TRASH. I AM PROBABLY THE ONLY ONE THAT DOES THIS BUT I PUT ALL OF MY DISKS IN A ‘SOUNDGEAR’ CD/DVD SLEAVE CASE. THE CASE THEN GOES INTO MY FIRE PROOF FILE BOX. IF MY PLACE GOES AT LEAST I STILL HAVE MY BELOVED MISTY DVD’S. IT’S THE ONLY THING I NEED TO SURVIVE ( besides my 42 inch palsma hdtv, beer + subway footlongs ).

I don’t care at all about the cover art but I do care that this means that the show has hit iTunes. Download time baby! : )

Punky Brewster and Kung fu both has the exact same image on all seasons with a different background color.

I guess i’m one of the few who actually enjoyed the Rhino covers.

Shout’s next cover could be completely black, like Spinal Tap’s “Smell the Glove” album. As long as it contains 4 new awesome MST3K episodes, I’ll be happy!

#15- Frank’s TV- You should really convert to Quiznos instead of Subway. Much better use of Prime Rib/steak.
As for the cover, count me in on not caring in the slightest. As long as the cover doesn’t say “Swamp Thing Volume 1” I’m good.

I guess I must not be a true fan by #5’s standards, but he can pucker up and smooch my hinder. I actually do care about the covers, and think that how something looks matters. I don’t really think this is very good, but the slipcases have better art.

I think it looks good. It’s consistent w/ what came before it.

I totally forgot about the slipcase art until Bill mentioned them! The fun, cartoony art is awesome, and a lot of work definitely went into them. Including the covers as posters is a great bonus.

Sorry, I meant Cabbage Patch Elvis mentioned the slipcase art.

What can blue do for you?…Make me happy as long as the episodes keep coming in rapid fire succession.

I’m surprised to see people knocking Rhino’s covers. By the end of their run, the covers were getting delightfully bizarre.
But ultimately I don’t care about cover arts; just give me the episodes!

I thought the final set from Rhino looked really cool, too. The oversized halftone versions of the bots was nice, and I liked how the dvds began to have their own theme images (the wheel for Giant Gila Monster, etc).

I would like to see some more variety in cover art. First priority is chapter search but cover art is important too. Individual DVD cases are good but the overall cover needs some work.

If you think about it since the individual dvds all have awesome cover art, then you have to admit that it’s better than Rhino’s because you are getting four unique pieces of cover art as opposed to one. You can just think of the outer box as just a holder for convenience sake.

File me under the “Yeah, the box could look a bit more ‘busy’ but as long as we get nicely done individual art for each DVD I don’t really care” category.

I absolutely LOVE the overall cover art that keeps the thin cases with their specific cover art. I’d love to see Shout keep up with this style, using a different colour every time. (ie. XIV:Green XV:Blue XVI:Red, etc.)

I liked the Rhino covers. A lot of detail went into them.

That’s ridiculous. In a pinch you can always survive on KFC (well, for a while, anyway).
And Rhino did have better cover art.

its not a huge issue for me but i definately liked rhino packaging as a whole more than shouts. the main peeve for me about shout is where the heck ar eht eepisode numbers and original airdates. i think that is essential for the cases, with the slimlines they should go the extra mile and put the episode number on the spine for easy reference. but getting three releases in the time it would take rhino to release one set and then quickly withdraw it for copywright infringement is great!

So the animator that throws in the limited mini posters cant draw a cover?

I like the Shout Factory covers better. A nice clean simple look that still reaches out and grabs you. I’m in the ‘too busy’ camp as far as the rhino covers. My only concern, however, is that without the silly rhino cover pictures (like dinosaurs, ufos, and flaming couches in trailer parks) the sets might not sell as well to non-misties.

For me, with Rhino I got to like the idea that I didn’t know what I’d see on the cover and dvds in the next set. Apparently, we all know exactly what every single cover for any future set from Shout will be like (which color will they use next? Magenta? Ooh…) and basically we know the slimline cases are going to look pretty much the same, too. As for the “limited” mini posters? So they pressed the print button twice. BFD.

Like what #34 gojikranz said, I do think Shout! has been alittle lazy with the info about each individual episode. One of Rhino’s strengths was their attention to detail on the insides of their volumes; by the time they released shows in boxed sets, they had done a great job with summaries, episode numbers, etc. that SF hasn’t quite duplicated.
As for the cover art, when Volume XIV came out, I was one of the people openly critical about the lack of creativity. Looking back, though, I think this was intentional on Shout’s part: they saw Rhino’s often over-the-top covers and probably decided to do the exact opposite. I’d have to go with Rhino’s covers as being better; they’re very eye-catching!
In the end, they all wind up on my shelf, with just the title of each set pointing outwards, so its really not that big a deal. Just as long as they keep coming.

I liked the Rhino packaging myself (especially the later ones), but I also like the “movie poster” art that Shout! is using. It seems to reinforce the whole Z-movie thing.
As for the front of the whole case, I don’t care a whole lot about it. It would be helpful to have the episode numbers somewhere on the piece, though.

You know, literally HUNDREDS of stock photos of the MST3K characters were shot over the decade it was on the air, surely Rhino or Shout Factory could’ve stumbled across those…?

I’m glad to see that Volume XIV’s eps are now on iTunes. I’ll probably get “Soultaker”, considering that its something of a landmark show.

I think what the underlying theme is we’d like to think they were really trying hard to do a good job on these DVD releases. It just smacks of them trying to just make a quick buck. But like many people have said “just keep them coming and I’m happy”

Am i the only one who misses Rhino’s menu screen and consistent episode breaks? The Shout releases have been much more difficult to get right to a favorite bit in the movies.

I guess what it comes down to for me is that I feel the box covers should convey what you’re getting inside in some way. The Rhino covers were usually based on the episodes in some way. It’s true that Shout is making great cover art for the individual cases, but couldn’t that somehow translate to the overall cover? If you were buying a MST boxed set for the first time and saw the selection of Rhino then Shout covers, which would you be more attracted to? Man, I sound like a dork.

In some way.

I’m in agreement with #36 and #44. If you were not a die-hard fan and were just going by the covers, you’d probably be more attracted to the crazy scenes on the rhino sets. It seems to me that Shout Factory would’ve figured this out. Perhaps they did their own research to the contrary or something.

You’ve all made excellent points here. To me, those Rhino covers were like Stella Dallas – overdressed, but with a heart of gold. But then, Henry David Thoreau said, “Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify.” To me, it’s all a question of balance. bad wolf, I agree with you that Shout! should put in a scene index, which, newbie that I am, I thought was standard on DVD’s that don’t come from the dollar store. But hey, those who think that what’s inside is more important are right too. There’s got to be a happy medium somewhere. Not that everyone will be 100% pleased all the time, but sort of a marriage of inner and outer beauty.

the cover(s) has no character. the show had tons of it. Shout needs to develope an art department of some sort or give some sort of discount for not trying. on a completely different note has anyone figured out which one of the 4 episodes was a last minute replacement (because they got lucky and got the rights to one they weren’t expecting to get). i ask this ’cause travis seemed to have all 4 episodes listed as very likely/likely or possible already.

loved the rhino covers, love the SF releases—but from Punky Brewster to Kung FU to MST3K??–@ Jaconey covers a lot of ground there!!

I don’t have a real strong opinion about this, but I was annoyed that the Rhino covers increasingly had nothing to do with MST or the movies included. (Why the dinosaur on the Godzilla set? Why the ham and eggs?) and I thought these were better.
I’m just happy about the individual slipcases, this time out… definitely an improvement.
