I’m so glad they’re doing this one. I can’t wait. I never thought this movie was scary, maybe now i’ll find it funny!

  2. Ew. That seems like kind of a poor choice for the sample. I mean I’ll probably download it, but kind of an awkward moment in the movie for riffing…

  3. When the shark grabs the girl from the buoy the riff should have been:

    “Please! I’m not interested!”

So, I guess you’ll want to go back and fix that, then…

  4. And when they show the remains of the girl:

“Excuse me, I have to go get on the police radio and cancel my Joe’s Crab Shack reservations.”

  5. The riffing picks up when Quint first appears.

When the guy is looking out in the ocean for his dog the riff should have been:

“Eh, I never liked that dog, anyway.”

    or

    “Dog gone!”

Hey, what’s up? Where is everyone?

Yes, after riffing The Dark Knight and Star Wars, riffing a rubber monster movie is their attempt to cheese people off.

  18. Travis says:

Hmm, why didn’t they do a RiffTrax for Jaws 4, Jaws 3 (which would be wonderful) or even Jaws 2 instead?

  19. WampaX says:

    Well Travis,

Its all about the bottom line. Most people that own a Jaws film own Jaws. If they were to release a Rifftrax for Jaws 4, the majority of the potential audience would probably need to purchase the film itself along with the trax. Targeting the “best selling” or “most popular” movies, ensures that Rifftrax can sell their product to the largest available audience with the least amount of customer overhead.

This is, sadly, pushing away some of the fans who wish for the before times when Orca (or another of the many, many other Jaws imitators) would have been the target of the riffing. But, just compare the number of people who own Orca vs Jaws and you can quickly see WHY Rifftrax (as a business) would want to riff one versus the other.

  20. It doesn’t interest me in the slightest (and doesn’t need to — we’ve already had that discussion before :>) but have ALL the RT ads said “Mystery Science Theater 3000” at the top of them?

And whether or not this is a first, how can Mike and Co. get away with that? This ISN’T MST3K, not by a long shot (sorry, Mike, but facts am the facts) and it seems to me there are probably others who own the copyright to that particular moniker.

So, it’s very misleading and probably illegal — what’s the story?

OH GAWD! Just when I think rifftrax couldn’t get any worse, they prove me wrong! That sample clip is terrible! What a piece of you-know-what! Someone said it here before… these guys peaked with mst3k and it has been down the hill ever since! Sheesh! I would be so embarrassed to put out something as lame as that sample clip (I can’t imagine the whole riff trax – Hell, I don’t even want to!)

The clip sounds like they are just struggling for anything (and I mean ANYTHING) to say. If this is the sort of crap they are going to continually churn out, they should have just stopped with mst3k. So much for a worthwhile legacy to look back on.

And I couldn’t agree more with you, WampaX! This is the problem inherent with rifftrax to begin with. They only pick their movies according to their business model and not to the movie actually being worthy of being riffed. Yeah, I know a lot of the folks around here say that any movie is fair game but the point of mst3k was that some clearly deserved it MORE.

These guys are clearly not PROFESSIONALS either. They have regressed back into amateurs. Crap, my kid brother could have made funnier riffs than this.

Castle Monster, your riffs must be from the actual riff trax and not the sample. Hell, I bet they are better than the doofus’ over at rifftrax. I hope they hire you. They need all the help they can get!

    What a load!

Damn. That really WAS bad. If that’s one of the highlights of that rifftrax, i can’t imagine the rest.

Something hit me, though, watching that preview clip. Do they license the clip that they use for the preview? How does that work out?

  23. Teenage Cavegirl says:

#20 – Yeah, it’s fairly mind-boggling that they just say “MST3K vs. ______”. It’s one thing to say “MST3K alums (or some variant) vs. _______” but the way they have it feels dishonest. Not trying to be unkind, but this is definitely *not* MST3K.

  24. “Castle Monster, your riffs must be from the actual riff trax and not the sample. Hell, I bet they are better than the doofus’ over at rifftrax. I hope they hire you. They need all the help they can get!”

“Maraih Carey!” was the only one from the actual Rifftrax. And thank you, I’m flattered.

But I wish everyone would ease up on them. I mean there’s controversy about some of the titles, but eventually they are going to run out of really commercial titles and they’ll have to come up with a different idea. Rifftrax may not be as consistently funny as Mike-MST3K was, but can you think of anything in the world that is as funny as MST3K? Can you imagine if there never was an MST3K? I think MST3K actually brightened up my life quite a bit, so I’m rooting for these guys to always make money off of it. They deserve that. Anyway, I’ll always hope they’ll bring back another regular riffing show using like Mike Kevin and Bill, but until then I’ll take what I can get.

    WTF?

    Sincerely,
    Edgewriter

P.S. Obviously you have never listened to a full Rifftrax. If you had, you would know that the jokes themselves are for the most part every bit as good as the MST3K Mike days.

What they are missing is a guy that could accurately pinpoint a good part of the movie to use as a sample clip.

the choice of that scene to preview was bizarre yes.but i welcome rifftrax riffing “good” movies.
why some people cant stand to see a movie with brilliant color, an originally scored soundtrack, great sound, and dialog thats comprehensible, i’ll never know.
how someones fragile mind cant take their favorite movies being riffed on and not still be able to enjoy said favorite is a mystery to me.
for every Manos, i also love seeing an over rated hit like The Dark Knight get the treatment.
repeat to yourself: its just a show……..

  29. “or get real jobs.”

I just assumed they had real jobs. On the other hand, Rifftrax must do pretty well, in spite of all the fanboy caterwauling. Personally, I hope they’re drinking deeply the grapes of life and laughing diabolically at the rest of us.

I’ve been watching quite a few of these lately and look forward to getting to this one.

Just to balance out all the negative comments, I think Rifftrax has brilliant writing. It’s a fun way to bring new life to movies some of us have seen a hundred times, and it’s a clever use of the internet to distribute their material.

Anyone who finds success doing what they love is going to have haters.

  31. I’m all for them riffing on big movies. I thought their take on Fellowship of the Rings was pretty amazing. But in the past year or so, it’s been very downhill.

The last one I heard from them was Star Wars. It was pretty bad (particularly how they pretended that Bill never saw it and that it was a really crappy movie).

There are scenes in Jaws that would be ripe for riffing. Almost any scene with Quint would be great – though not the Indianapolis speech. And sure as hell not the scene where a mother is grieving over her dead child.

Maybe rifftrax should stick to shorts. They’re good at that. Or maybe head in a direction like CT. But what they’re doing now just isn’t working.

  33. crowschmo says:

#22 – Yeah, you beat me to it. They don’t need to get the rights to the movies they riff, since it’s just a soundtrack customers synch up to it, but how DO they show all those clips on their site?

This ‘trax was actually pretty darned good. I can’t figure out why they opted to advertise this riff with one of the least comedic moments of the film, and certainly the least comedic moment of the RT. I’m seen some iffy RT samples before, but this one tops them all. If I were a newbie surfing around and thinking of buying, I probably wouldn’t after watching this.

I hate to say this, but I think it’s time for Mike, Kevin, and especially Bill to hang it up. It’s just not funny anymore, and as someone else said, they’re struggling to come up with anything, and it just ends up being half-assed. As a huge MST3K fan myself, I think it’s just over. Let it be.

  43. WouldntYouLikeToKnow says:

Why do the Rifftrax ads say Mystery Science Theater 3000 on them…?! MST3K died after season 7, which was what, 13 years ago…?? This is NOT MST3K. The ads are lies and misleading and probably needs some legal matter taken into account.

  44. Satan's Jockstrap says:

I thought the sample clip was damn funny! It might possibly be in poor taste, but then again it’s just a fictional movie. And making fun of tragedy is nothing new for MST3K alumni (they’ve been doing it since KTMA), so I’m kind of desensitized to it by now. Personally, I can’t wait to hear the riffs during Quint’s death scene!

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want them ( CT or Rifftrax ) to fail. We owe them too much for MST3K itself to wish them ill. If they can make a decent living doing whatever this is they do, that’s great. I just wish it was something I enjoyed more. Sigh.

It’s a pity that MST3K didn’t make them all gajillionaires. Though maybe they did and they blew it all on PBR, lottery tickets and really slow ponies.

Hey, I didn’t have the intrawebs back when MST3K was actually on television – can any of you savvy fans inform me how the current RiffTrax bashing stacks up to, say, the Joel v. Mike flamewars, etc.?

I love RiffTrax, love CT. Are they as good as MST? Not always, but they’re pretty damn close, and I think they’re also improving over time. Kind of like some cowtown puppet show I like….
