Weekend Discussion Thread: MSTed Characters with Your Name

Alert reader Danzilla proposes:

This week’s episode discussion (Girl in Lovers Lane) reminded me of something that makes the episode particularly funny to me: Big Stupid’s hooker-obsessed, hobo buddy is named Danny, which is, of course, my name! While I am neither hooker-obsessed nor (at least currently) a hobo, I get a huge kick out of hearing the riffing crew saying my name over and over again! Lines like “He just broke Danny!” and “Danny should really come with a tote” just kill me, and in ways that any MSTie not named Danny wouldn’t really get. It got me thinking, who of my fellow fans out there share names with MST characters (both in the universe of the show and the movies themselves)? What were your reactions to hearing your name on screen, or seeing your name assigned to a particular character? Or, have you ever watched the show with a friend or family member who share THEIR name with an MST character, and what were their reactions?

Well, what comes to mind is poor doomed Chris the dog in 801- REVENGE OF THE CREATURE. I felt a special kinship.

Have you had this experience?

Time of the Apes, two ape sentries pass each other and the guys quip “Hi Steve.” “Hi Phil.”. These are my brother’s and my names. It’s particulary funny because we always teased that we look like chimps, short legs and hairy. I guess all we would have needed to get a role in that movie is boots and a riding crop.

When I was 15, in 1993, my best friend’s name was Joel. We used to watch the midnight showings during summer vacation. It’s one of my favorite memories of the many things we used to do together.

I usually go by Michael, but Joel was the only one I let call me Mike.

Needless to say, when Mitchell came along we had a very personal flame war.

We didn’t really, though. We both agreed that Joel was our first love as host, but learned to appreciate Mike, too.

Like Gypsy said, Mike is a very nice name.

Good ol’ Alex of “Young Man’s Fancy” and I share a lot of similarities: we both have the same name, we’re interested in appliances and we’re usually too oblivious to notice the advances of potentially unhinged women. However, while I have evoked many an emotional response in women over the years, I’m not sure I can add “squishy” to my list.

My wife’s alternate stinger for MANHUNT IN SPACE features Hagar Nu (sp?), when he says, “Ken is an evil man,” because my name is Ken. She says that to me ALL the time. My name crops up in the Japanese episodes as well, of course — where EVERYBODY is named Ken. I’ve always loved that.

I sort of wish my name was Hagar Nu, because that’s just a really cool name (I’ve NEVER thought Ken was a cool name).

I’m looking forward to hearing from all those MSTies out there named Squeamy and Winky. :)

Despite having one of THE most popular names of my era, I can’t recall any MST movie characters offhand named Susan but I’m sure there must be some. Sue, Susie, Suzy, etc., yes, but I loathe those nicknames for myself.

Not an MST3K moment, but one of the shorts compilations from RiffTrax contains 2 shorts in a row which feature the dating problems of someone named Jeff. I have been reluctant to show these to friends, for fear of the mocking reprisals.

On a more serious note, the pair of older students in the MST Short “Keeping Clean and Neat” are named John and Arlene. These were the names of my grandparents who passed away a few years ago, so that always brings them to mind. I actually had a special moment earlier this week when I had the chance to meet and pray with a nice couple who had these same names.

There are many characters from both the shorts and films named Jim or Jimmy, but I think I identify most with Jimmy from “Hired!” I’ve been working at Target for less than a year, and have had the same kind of starting problems that he did. I started a hard worker, but a slow one. I have gotten much faster now, though. I see much of Jimmy from “Hired!” in me.

I had to trawl through Daddy-O’s Drive-In Dirt to check if there were any characters who shared my name (thank goodness for Control-F). The only one I found who didn’t use it as their surname was Gordon Hawthorne in The Thing That Wouldn’t Die. Can’t say I really connect with him.

    The Little Creature…
Ah, the many uses of that euphonious appellation. “Don’t let the Little Creature out yet!”. Or “The Little Creature needs a hug.”. Or “Oh look, the Little Creature is all wet.”. And, of course…
“Oh, the Little Creature is all tired out and just wants to lay down.”. I think our dog got eventually got used to the name.

We live in the country, with trees, so we have burn days to dispose of downed limbs. These consist of one burn pile and one or more feeder piles. Prior to preparing for our fire, a common refrain in our house is “Don’t give Mikey no matches.” But, no, we don’t have any llamas. (Amazing Transparent Man)

There are a handful of Kathys in the episodes, but the one where my name is mentioned the most is probably Alien From L.A., and that isn’t even the character’s name. Unfortunately, I do not look like Kathy Ireland, but at least I don’t have her squeaky voice.

The big-haired girl from Attack of the the Eye Creatures was named Susie. Don’t you feel lucky now?

I can only think of one character, Trish from Angels Revenge, who sort of has my name. But I’ve always disliked that version of Patricia, and don’t like being called by it, ever, even if you pronounce it Htrish.

I can’t offhand think of any Josephs. But people tend to call me “Joe” because I’m never really forceful enough about how I make more sense as `Joseph’ than `Joe’, and I’ll answer to it with just a little bit of worry that I’m doing something wrong. And then Joe opens up a world of MST3K riffs, largely from the early part of This Island Earth where things are happening and there’s stuff to plug in and all.

As a skinny teen who looked remarkably like the whiny young protagonist from Final Sacrifice, finding out he was named Troy made it a little harder to enjoy the episode at first, but only a little. None of my MSTie friends razzed me about it later, though I suspect that if Mike and the bots had spent more time fixating on the character like they did with Mikey from Teen-Age Strangler or sung a song about him, things might have gone differently.

Luckily, Troy and his Larry Csonka fetish was almost immediately overshadowed by the raw bacon-y screen presence of Rowsdower!, so I escaped with most of my ego intact.
