Let’s leave aside the gripes about “stunt casting,” and instead ask: what major (or minor) celebrity do you think would work well popping up on MST3K 2.0?
Me, I’m going to say just one word: Shatner.
Who would you like to see?
Weekend Discussion Thread: Guest Stars? One of the biggest bombshells Joel dropped in the build-up to the end of the Kickstarter campaign was that A-listers — including Jack Black, Joel McHale, Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris, Jerry Seinfeld and Mark Hamill — have expressed an interest in doing a guest spot on the show.

Leonard Maltin, trying again to be a Forrester henchman, and getting thrown out
Anyone from Felicia’s web show, “The Guild”
Anyone from “Agents of SHIELD” claiming Son of TV’s Frank is a SHIELD mole (since he looks like a Koenig)

Pinky and the Brain should show up and give the Mads a few tips on evil experiments and taking over the world.

Joe Don Baker. Might as well keep dreaming big, right?
Alas, Beverly Garland would’ve been fantastic.

If having guest stars builds up interest in the show and keeps it going, then more power to having guest stars. Unfortunately, there is only one I can think of that I want to see;
Bruce Dern
However, Robert Smith and Leonard Malten who were the first two guest stars MST3K ever had, should be introduced as such and then quickly shuffled off.

I agree on Shatner. He’s shown he has a sense of humor about himself, so I think he’d do OK on the show. The same goes for Adam West.
I wonder if some of the other current horror movie hosts might want to drop in for a visit. That might be interesting.

Tom “The Master” Neyman, Jackey “Little Debbie” Neyman, Svengoolie and Mr. Lobo would be great.

Kim Cattrall –
She was both Crow’s love interest and a Star Trek character. Vulcan, no less. Rumor is that Leonard Nimoy caught her on the movie set after hours doing a racy photo shoot. How naughty. Heh, heh.

We’ve got Felicia Day as a Mad. We’ve got Neil Patrick Harris for a possible guest spot.
Why not bring in Nathan Fillion?

Adam West, Tommy Wiseau, Tom Neyman, Reb Brown, Tia Carrere, Stephen Hawking, Wil Wheaton, Nathan Fillion, Olivia Munn and I bet Ian McKellar would be willing

They could trade evil tips with Felicia and Patton.

Wil Wheaton, as he does celebrity spots on all the other shows out there.
Also, when Neil Patrick Harris appears on the show, he should bring his parents, and Sheila should bring her now-world-famous Oooey Gooey bars to Jonah and the bots.

Motorhead: They could do a metal version of the theme song, and I’m pretty sure Lemmy could be worked in as a character in one or more of the host segments.

I totally agree that Jackey “Little Debbie” Neyman (from Manos) would be awesome and I bet she’d do it. She’s awesome — catch her official Manos group on Facebook. I’m not sure her dad, The Master, would be able to, health-wise, but it would be awesome to see him too.
Also agree with Shatner and Adam West. They seem to have good senses of humor and I bet they’d do it. And another thumbs-up for Reb Brown, if he’s game.
Other suggestions: Any of the guys from The Final Sacrifice especially the one that played Pipper, and Ben Murphy. Because he’s BEN MURPHY.

I’d love to see Arch Hall Jr or Beverly Garland drop by, but as far as current celebs go I’d love to see Chris Pratt pop in. Why not? He’s all over the place and seems to have a genuinely good sense of humor and ability to laugh at himself. ^^

Yep. Kim Cattrell. She rings my bell. I think she’s swell.
And how about the Tardis grinding in, the Doctor and/or a companion (River Song?)
popping out and looking around, saying “oops”, and disappearing. A bit of cross
promoting?

Mr. B Natural. You’ll find her in Minnesota.

Joe Estevez, especially if he shows up at the Mads’ HQ and Kinga tries to dismiss him with “GoodBYE, Joe!”
This could be something of a great new tradition. Murdock Hauser mentioned Svengoolie and Mr. Lobo as possible guests, and there are plenty of other hosts who would make for fun guest appearances.
Maybe they could get Elvira, Wolfman Mac, Joe Bob Briggs, and others?

Seeing that Bill Hader is one of the likely guest stars, various people from SNL being on would be great, as they’re good at playing characters (or maybe it’s just that MST3K is my 2nd favorite TV show ever, with SNL at #1…).
Writing-wise, I’d love to see Dan Harmon bring on fellow 21st century sitcom creator god Mitch Hurwitz, who’s been on Community. May be awfully busy with his own show, though, given that Arrested Development and MST3K are being made and shown at roughly the same time. Really, 2016 is going to be an awesome time for (online) TV!

Oh, not the self-consciously goofy post-Priceline Shatner who’s playing himself for camp like Alec Baldwin…That would just bring the whole conversation down.
“Daddy, what’s Pinky & the Brain? Was that one of the cartoons from the 90’s when you were a kid, like when Mommy complains that MTV won’t show Daria?”
I’ll second Kim Catrall and Little Debbie, though (especially if she brings her snack cakes). If it’s going to be shoutouts to the Old Days, helps to show how much the generations have passed.
On paper, I’d have loved to see Simon & Hecubus show up too, for that same 90’s vibe, but Dave Foley, who was only a little bit of a complete bastard when the Kids show was on, since seems to have crawled back into a bottle, and only does wrestling and poker shows. :( At least Kevin MacDonald had Disney shows to keep him occupied.

You know, an Arrested Development appearance of some kind would be kind of poetic because of how the fourth season featured the silhouetted appearance of Joel and the ‘Bots (with Joel and Trace providing voiceovers).
Maybe Magic Voice can sound like Ron Howard for an episode?

I don’t know, but I hope any guests are limited to playing an actual character rather than themselves. The exception being Leonard Malting of course.
I honestly can’t think of anyone I would want as a guest star on the new show.

Another idea of an in-joke (one that I’ve been doing for years, myself): Having that woman who’s been playing Flo in the Progressive insurance ads – in character – on the show as Mr. B Natural’s daughter. Mr. B is Flo’s ….uh…. mom, right?

First of all I think just about everyone from geek culture past and present should have a shot at being considered if they want to do it. Especially past, since I think that’s what’ll really get people talking. Getting anyone who ran on Nick-at-Nite in the 90s in my mind wouldn’t feel out of place doing a one-off appearance. There’s no way it could hurt the show.
Well, Jerry Seinfeld is interested, so what about Larry David? He’s probably about a phone call away from saying yes anyway.
Also I’ve been watching The Carol Burnett Show on MeTV lately and I’d love Carol Burnett to show up. Or Tim Conway. Or both.
If anyone wants to talk about the fact that MST3K never really did cameos except for Leonard Maltin, I guess I’m dividing them into two different eras in my mind. There’s classic MST3K, and there’s new MST3K. New MST3K is going to be a little different anyway, so I don’t mind whatever they do as long as it’s not trying to sell out to younger people. MST3K is kind of a “horror host” sort of program, so if they do occasional cameos in the host segments it won’t be too out of place.

Got too agree with Mr. Lobo. Maybe Larry Blamire, C. Courtney Joyner.

This is exactly the kind of thing I think they should NOT care about. They need to be able to work off of nostalgia and not worry about the new kids not understanding it if it’s going to have any appeal at all. The classic show never cared about stuff like that. If you think this is a big deal, you’re clearly not someone who “gets it”.

Well, the joke was more along the lines of “Boy, did Spielberg’s toons not age well…”
And Tim Conway started out on a horror-movie host show, and he’s slowing down a bit, but he could still bring things to a stop just walking into the room. He’s TOO powerful for the show.
(Even if they used jokes about his still looking for Wookelars.)

When NPH shows up, hopefully he’ll play an old colleague of Kinga’s, make him like Dr Horrible without actually calling him such. Unless Joss Whedon allows them to do that.

Mr. Lobo from Cinema Insomnia would be an amazing guest! He’s a huge MSTie, and Joel Hodgson loves him!
Invite him to be a guest MST3K! He’s on Facebook as Alan N. Smithee!

I’ll cast another vote for Mr. Lobo. He would be absolutely perfect.

I kinda want to see Sean Kyer as Oscar and/or Joshua Kilmnik as Odd Todd from ODD SQUAD but you have no idea who they are…
Bill Mumy’s another ‘geek star’ who hasn’t been mentioned.
Or maybe Craig Ferguson, though I’ve no idea if he knows or cares anything about the show.

They’ve aged well enough. Slappy and Skippy doing “Who’s On First?” is still the best reincarnation of the classic skit.
