Wow again! It’s really amazing. I am not sure how much it’s going to feel like MST3K though.
Seems like one problem they might have is having so many people on each episode. Not only all these guests, but the people that PAID to appear in an episode. I think it’ll be fun though.

Yeah, that might be too many for just twelve episodes… :-D

They’ll just need to get picked up and do more seasons. Problem solved!

When you think about it, though, they had a lot of guest characters in the sketches. They were just always played by Best Brains folks (usually whoever was able to fit in logistically, or who did a good impersonation of someone in the movie). From the Bomb worshippers to the Amazing Colossal Man to Torgo to Huggybear to Pitch, it was a non-stop cavalcade of people dropping by. There’s no reason those parts couldn’t be filled by actors from outside the show who want do to cameos.
Plus who can forget Robert Smith and Leonard Maltin?

Mark Hamill is a MSTie? How cool is that!

Not bad for a cow town puppet show!

This is absolutely fascinating.
And fantastic! Joel is hitting this out of the park.

Note that Joel said these people are *interested* in appearing on MST3K. It’s not a sure thing yet. But, I have a hunch Neil patrick harris and Jerry Seinfeld will turn up at some point.
Jack Black’s an MST3K fan? That’s news to me.
And I am fully behind Joel wanting Tina Fey on! If anyone can get in contact with her, give her a heads up!

As I’ve said on other sites, I feel like these people are too famous to really fit in to a show where the previous guests were mostly the writers in costumes. I mean, they won’t necessarily make it bad, just maybe a little too different.

I can definitely see what you’re getting at. We don’t want MST3K to thrive too much on stunt casting; the show can survive on its own. But, yeah that tends to happen a lot with reboots. Look at the CW incarnation of “Whose Line is it, Anyway?” 98% of the episodes all have a celebrity guest now (and most of them are people I’ve never heard of).
Well – “Whose line” is a good example of using celebrity cameos to the sometimes detriment of the show – but when one of the guests works it’s actually pretty good. However, a show like The Muppets always thrived on the celebrity cameos – and still does. The scene with Lawrence Fishburne in a golf cart on the backlot busting on Kermit is one of the funniest things I’ve seen on TV this year.
I can see the problem…seeing Jerry Seinfeld, Jack Black, or Tina Fey show up is going to kind of pull you out of the show unless handled just right. The start of this was bringing Patton Oswalt in, which never not makes me think “Hey! There’s Patton Oswalt!” (Whom I love, BTW.)
I still think it could be handled right. Having some of these people come in an playing alien visitors would be great. Having Mark Hamill come in and play a “wise mystic advisor” type character could be hilarious if they play it off of his elder Luke Skywalker role (without calling him Luke Skywalker).
IDK – for those early on that dismissed this as “it isn’t going to be the same” I can only say that they are certainly right – but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a LOT of fun.
And I’m beginning to become a believer that we are going to get to 12 episodes.

Intriguing guest stars. Not that MST was ever about gimmicks like this. However it is neat to see some famous fans of the show. It would be nice to see Trace or Frank or Kevin on that list but as they aren’t the Kickstarter donation generators like apparently having Bill Hader is, I know that isn’t happening.

I see this as very positive!
Are the new mads on their own? or in deep 13? Who are their superiors?
Who runs Gizmonics? Jack Black? Fey?
Does Jerry Seinfeld own an apartment on the SOL?
Is the SOL in Earth orbit?

I knew Joel was friendly with Seinfeld since he guest-starred on Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and maybe Jerry will just return the favor. Of course, if Seinfeld was a REALLY big fan he could just finance the whole thing. He could probably dig up $5 million from between his couch cushions.

Celebrities on MST3K? Blasphemous! It should only feature unknowns. Just like the show when it first began. There were these 2 robots and…say, isn’t that guy playing the host of the show Joel Hodgson from The Tonight Show & Saturday Night Live?

Joel also made a brief cameo in an old sketch special that Seinfeld produced YEARS ago (before MST3K I think).
Joel also stated once that when the show was in the process of heading off KTMA, and finding a new home at Comedy Central, Joel had approached Seinfeld about hosting the series, (or at least collaborate on a project together), but Seinfeld couldn’t do it because he was already getting his sitcom off the ground with NBC.

Meanwhile, Bill Corbett says on Twitter “Seems @TraceBeaulieu and I are way too old to do puppet voices.”
I want to be excited but man, Joel seems to have really rubbed all of the Old Guard the wrong way. :/

Joel wrote for Seinfeld’s first HBO Special back in the 1980s.

Jack Black? Can’t see why he’d be on a comedy show. Maybe they could get Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler, too! :dazed:

I want to like MST3K Mark II – I really do. But all the stunt-casting and big names being thrown around now is getting a little bit much. What’s next? Miley Cyrus, Bill Murray and the 101st Airborne Division singing the “MST Theme Song”? :)

You say that as if it wouldn’t be awesome.

Bill *has* to be joking. If these guys are being serious about being left out then honestly I’ve kinda lost some respect for them.
As i have already mentioned more than a few times, Joel ASKED these guys if they want to be involved (long before the announcement of the reboot), and they said no, they don’t want to because they’re busy with other things, or because they just don’t want to go back to MST3K.
With a new reboot on the horizon, Joel has gone to other people, and now they’re bitching about being left out. MAKE UP YOUR FREAKING MINDS!!!!!
Going back to “Whose Line” this is sort of like how Richard Vranch (the original music player on the TV series) got fed up with Whose Line and said he didn’t want anything to do with it when it was announced it was moving to the US. And then when they *did* move to the US and Laura Hall was hired as his replacement, Vranch griped about not being invited to take part. I don’t get these people sometimes….

How about they just tie and gag him to a chair, like in the Muppets movie?

How about a little name tweak since this is obviously not going to be the old or same mst3k we all know and love. How about Mystery science Theater 4000?

Before anyone feels bad about Mike, Kevin, and Bill being left out of the new MST3K, I suggest they re-read this interview:
http://diffuser.fm/rifftrax-interview/ (read the last question asked to them).
Okay, Bill did say that it would depend on the arrangement, but Mike and kevin made it clear as day they were’t interested in coming back. But, I still always got a sense Bill was tactfully saying he didn’t want to go back t MST3K.

And you’d be right. Miley and MST would be two tastes that don’t go great together. :)

Guys, you do know Bill was probably just joking? I mean, Frank’s tweets I can see as being possibly bitter, but I think Bill was just joshing.

please for the love of God, no Will Ferrell. I know 99% of the world seems to love the guy, but to me he’s not funny. He’s trying too hard to be Steve Martin

What if they did a cameo??

They should just drop the pretensions of ties to the old show and call it Hollywood Hipster Nerd 3000

I think the 3000 in the title now refers to the total amount of nerdbait actors/crew members that Joel will have crammed in by the time filming ends. ;)

It’s just a show – you should all just relax. Or, I don’t know, view these actors as ACTORS playing a part on a SHOW. Who cares if you already know who they are? Are you going to go to the new Star Wars movie and say, “Hey, wait! Isn’t that Mark Hammill??!!! I can’t watch this! It’s ruined!”
Okay, I know he’s actually associated with Star Wars, so that’ a bit different, but you get what I mean. Suspend your sense of belief for a while and enjoy the thing for what it is. A goofy show that makes fun of bad movies. With big stars in it. Who ruin the whole concept of it being a shoe-string budgeted, little cow-to…oh, forget it. The end is nigh.

Ugh. Amazing that MST3K’s purported FAN site is the most negative environment about this revival. I’m done on these boards for awhile. It’s exhausting and I’m having too much fun focusing on the good and the beautiful. Like going to Kickstarter HQ tomorrow for the NYC MST3K party with people who are actually happy about this.

They should have Jerry play Gerry. Or Sylvia.

I don’t want it to be a condemnation of the comments section and this website in general, but if you’re sniping this reboot here instead of on Facebook, you might be someone who is having a hard time with change. The one good thing I can say is, the level of discourse is probably a little more reasoned here – elsewhere seems to be “hey, you don’t need this, there’s this thing called Rifftrax now where they make fun of newer movies. LOL, Why do you want to see puppets make fun of movies???”

Sampo and Erhardt are wonderful treasures to the MSTie community. I come to Satellite News more than I visit any newspaper site (a sad reflection on my warped priorities, I realize). I just can’t stand the negativity on the boards about the revival. This is a fantastic achievement that Joel is pulling off. It’s remarkable and I don’t want to hear people bagging on it because they’re afraid of change. Really, we’re supposed to complain that Joel got Jerry Freakin’ Seinfeld to support and appear on MST3K? Really?!?

Mark Hamill could riff the Star Wars Holiday Special!

Apropos of MST3K, there is the story of how the legendary Alamo Drafthouse got a visit from Seinfeld, because he apparently wanted to see “B-movie trailers”.
They trotted out their archive cult collection of greatest B-movie trailers from the 60’s and 70’s, and Jerry sat there, gradually looking bored and impatient….As it turned out, they had misheard him, and he wanted to see his OWN “Bee Movie” trailer before it hit the big screen.
For me, that’s generally summed up a pretty good view of Seinfeld’s approach to anybody else’s work. I don’t think we’re going to get primo Manos riffs out of him.

Has John Brady been asked back? You know, Benkitnorf from MST3K: The Movie.

Jesus, Eric, you really are a jerk.
If *I* asked some theater somewhere to show me a trailer of my own movie and then sat down and they started showing stuff that had absolutely no relevence to what I had wanted I would have done my best not to turn around and tell them to stop the crap and give me what I wanted, as I had no time to waste (and that’s ME, a non-star who just doesn’t have time left in life for things I can do better elsewhere).
I don’t think that does anything other than show that Jerry is exactly like anyone else, and perhaps WAY more tolerant than anyone of his star magnitude would have been (I can’t even imagine what someone like Sean Connery would have done — the cursing and storming off would have been… wait for it… legendary).
Now — once the confusion was cleared up he might have had a good laugh out of it (and perhaps made it into a joke into his comedy act) but that’s about all I would have expected. Seinfeld may or may not be a nice person in Real Life (it don’t matter — most of the famous and talented aren’t people you’d ever want to be friends with) but that has nothing to do with what he might add to any show he has any involvement with.
(You, OTOH, are someone I’d be unlikely to figure would contribute anything to ANY creative endeavor).

I hope nobody tells Seinfeld about all the jokes MST3K did at his expense for dating a 17-year-old…

You can add Josh Weinstein alongside Bill, Trace and Frank as old-schoolers who feel mistreated by the new enterprise. I love Joel but it sure looks like he mishandled some things.

Okay, why does Josh have to tweet that THIS close to the end of the Kickstarter? Now all that does is make me feel guilty about supporting the new show. All this effort everyone has gone to this past month, and you wanna undo it with another cryptic tweet? That seems a tad classless to me, and I thought Josh was actually being pretty classy so far.

No need for guilt from anyone. I’ll tell you how I see it. Perhaps I can help lead some from the darkness…
I have no idea the details of any offers Joel made to anyone so, therefore, I can’t possibly know what was said by anyone. All I know is that I love that MST3K is coming back. This might fail to be funny or could be great. Either way, I wanted to be part of my favorite show of all-time, and I am. Everything else– the arguments, resentments, the negative and positive comments and support, and the like (all of which have been very entertaining)– are what they are. As an individual, how do YOU feel about all this, apart from all the rigmarole? That’s the only feeling that matters.
I’m curious to see how it all turns out. I will miss having MST3K so prominent in the world of buzz. This whole thing was fun.
That’s what Christmas means to me, Charlie Brown.

Seriously. I’m much preferring the MST3K subreddit, as there’s a lot more positivity. It seems to avoiid most of the get-off-my-lawn types, as wel as thet weird sub-group of people who seem to only like Rifftrax (disclaimer: I like Rifftrax). The amount of negativity and cynicism here is suffocating. You’d think that the Kickstarter was “Help Destroy All Copies of Every MST3K Episode Ever Made and Delete the Show From Existence” by the way people are acting.
