Alert reader Sitting Duck asks:
During the course of a film, the riffers will sometimes refer to one or more characters by (usually derisive) nicknames. Which of these are your favorites? Mine come from Time Chasers, where crooked CEO J.K. Robertson is referred to as “Bob Evil.”
My pick: “The Load” in “Mole People.”
What’s yours?
first one that comes to mind is Big Mclargehuge from space mutiny, but there is also about 100 more from that episode
All of Dave Ryder’s nicknames.

Big Stupid in “The Girl in Lovers Lane”.
Zap Actionsdower!
Gonna have to second “The Load”. Kills me every time. Also, “Wormy” from Gunslinger.
And every time they refer to a character as “Cooky the Clown”, I completely loose it. “Hoooo hooo, Cooky’s at it again! Oh, Cooky…”
Who else but “Jan In the Pan” from “The Brain that Wouldn’t Die?”
Boggy Creek II –
“Twig Boy”, the shirtless wonder. Otherwise known as Charles B. Pierce’s little boy. Not to be confused with the other Little Creature.
Don’t forget that Cameron Mitchell’s character in Space Mutiny was “Captain Santa Claus.”
In Red Zone Cuba, Coleman became Curly the Stooge at many points in the riffing, even devolving into a nature documentary riff near the end.
What else? Corn Job! From “Gamera vs. Guiron.”
And My Cheese Steak! From “Colossus and the Headhunters.”
“The Fish-Lipped Guy” from “The Band That Played ‘California Lady'”. A two-fer!
Also from Space Mutiny: “Lobster Boy”.
And from Hobgoblins, “Frankie, Sniffles, Bounce-Bounce, and The Claw”. Slays me every time.
Johnny Longbone!
Farmer Squarehead, “The Touch of Satan.”
Monkey Boy :monkey2:
Creepy Girl!
Machiste as ‘my cheese steak.’
Definitely Big Stupid, as mentioned above!
Also “Rasta, the kooky dred clown” from Zombie Nightmare. It’s not a running joke through the movie, but still a hilarious nickname :-P
Jabba the Husband
Can’t forget about Toblerone from Escape 2000 or Pile-on-Pete from The Painted Hills.
Those have to be some of the greatest MST3K nicknames that originated from profound misunderstandings.
Definitely:
Bob Evil
The Load
The Paper Chase Guy
I liked it when they referred to the guy swinging his guitar at the Creeping Terror as El Kabong. You can’t go wrong with a Quick Draw McGraw reference.
skin snag
whizz bang
Can I get some more water?
No one’s done this one yet so I will. YAK BOY!!! a.k.a. Critter from GIRL IN GOLD BOOTS!
Continually referring to Coleman Francis as “Curly” throughout Red Zone Cuba was just great. It only got funnier as the film went on.
An honorable mention to “Weenie Man” from This Island Earth.
Leonardo de Wet Pants, Leonardo de Nothing-O, Mary Tyler Less, The Coffee Guy, The Creeping Newlywed
Blast HardCheese’s girlfriend “Grandma Daughter”.
Rocky Jones: “Oh look, it’s Pumpkin Head!”
“Rick Astley” for the communications officer on the bridge in ‘Space Mutiny.’ It was only in one line, when Mike has Captain Santa saying, “Whaddaya got for me, Rick Astley?” but he really does look like him.
I think if I were playing Crow’s game of adopting a catch phrase, that would be mine. I use it around the house when someone in my family calls for me. “Whaddaya got for me, Rick Astley?” I think I want that on a t-shirt.
It was in a host segment, but when they recreated the opening titles for Cave Dwellers, they called the bad guy “The Evil John Saxon-type Guy”.
If I remember correctly, there’s at least two characters they refer to as Colonel Sanders lookalikes, one in Gamera as “Japanese Colonel Sanders” and another is one of the apes in Time of the Apes. Interesting how Colonel Sanders has become relevant again lately. I think MST3K sort of proves that pop culture works in cycles like that.
Petey Plane!
Er, that was Commando Cody?
“It’s the adventures of Jack O. Lantern, Private Eye!”
“Let’s find Pile-On (Pilot) Pete!”
“And pile on him! :) ”
The third greatest misunderstood name, of course, is Officer Kondo, aka Kon-chan, aka Cornjob. (Possibly misheard “Corncob”?)
“And don’t call me Cornjob, my name is Kondo!”
“…Master of Darkness!”
i can’t believe i forgot ‘little man’ or ‘wormy’ from ‘Gunslinger.’
All good picks, but I gotta go with Big McLargeHuge
Torgo: the Knees of Fate
I like “Electrician” from Devil Fish.
@ #27: It was Commando Cody whom they referred to as Pumpkin Head (though it might have been Pumpkin Boy).
Another favorite from Time Chasers was Bob Evil’s lackey Matt being called Pink Boy.
Jean-Claude Gosh Darn from “Future War”
Bob Ovalhead and Icky Elf from “Girl in Gold Boots”
Arch Hall Jr. = “Cabbage Patch Elvis” in Egah.
Also, the female lead in Devil Fish was referred to as Farrah Fawcett Minor. Not sure why that one came to mind, lol.
From ‘The Painted Hills, Pile-on Pete (before they found it was Pilot Pete all along.)
Did Watney Smith from OUTLAW ever get a nickname, or was he simply too annoying & repulsive to deserve the honor?
Has anyone mentioned Lobster Boy from MUTINY IN SPACE or & from CRASH OF THE MOONS?
Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but Bob Jackass for the smarmy niche store reviewer from Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders.
Yep, Creepy Girl FTW!
Ineffectual Chicken-Headed Bachelor AKA Space Chief
“C’mon, Grandma Dried Apple Head…”
Paper Chase Guy for Robert Ginty in Warrior of the Lost World. I love the fact that they know the actor’s name, it’s clearly on the credits, but they refuse to say it and just call him “the guy from Paper Chase” the entire movie.
“I’m Bob Boxbody!”
Big Stupid is hard to beat.
