Even if he’s serious, I suppose he has a point. But I can’t fight my impulses to mock bad movies and so I figure I might as well enjoy it.
If you go to his site and read about his “films” The longest is 20 some minutes.
Jules is some liberal scum bag who thinks it’s cool to trash something he admits he used to love. I’m guessing some moron who he thinks is cool now (a professor or some dude he met) knocked the show after he said he liked it and now to fit in he knocks the show by cursing (showing a lack of maturity and intelligence) and belittling it. I mean really his big problem is that they used pan and scan movies instead of widescreen and had silhouettes in the corner. Why anyone would listen to a 22 year old bitter, whiny wannabe filmmaker is beyond me. I think he’s just really pissed his parents gave him a girls name !!!!! Jules grow up and get a life. I watched a few minutes of his films on You Tube, and MST3K would not ever do these. The films are that bad. Even Manos is an oscar winner in comparison. Actually, I don’t consider these “films”, more like “a group of friends messing around one day”.
After watching a few of his films, about the only thing he has managed to accomplish is making movies on his own that are maybe equivalent to a first or second year film student, and not a student that particularly stands out, either. If he gets some formal training, he can probably hone and improve those skills, but otherwise his filmmaking’s probably just going to stay at that level.
He’s absolutely right, the host segments aren’t simply funny, they’re ELABORATELY funny!
I think the comment about the “irreverent ‘we’re so f-ing brilliant’ commentary”, whether joking or not, really sums up some of those who “hate” the show. Yes, there’s the people who simply don’t get it and the ones who think ALL movies are sacred… But the comment you see a lot of the time when it comes to MST3K is “Well, I’d rather just mock the movie myself with my friends. We come up with way funnier stuff.” Like everyone else was too dumb to think of that. Which to me is kind of like saying “Why would I watch a standup comic when I could just do it myself at home in front of my friends.” Or hell, “Why watch TV for that matter when there’s such thing as video cameras?” I play music but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy other’s music. That’s the whole Point of entertainment! To be lazy! ;) Sure, we can all riff or do standup but we’re not all Joel or Carlin. THe results are going to be different.
I’m not saying this person is one of them (and maybe he’s actually mocking them, i dunno), but comments like that and calling the Brains “pretentious douchebags” seems to be like the “heckler” mentality you would see in entertainment. Anybody who’s ever been in a band might know the type. (Don’t exactly think you suck but still hate you or think you suck but won’t go away.) Rappers that the kids love so would call them “haters”.
Anyways, I know it was mostly about film presentation, but I thought I’d still throw that out there since the discussion about people who don’t like the show has come up a lot lately. I should really just relax myself. :)

ya, I watched a minute and it became obvious that it was filmed in a garage. He is just pissed that people make fun of Ed Wood and Colman Fancis because he can’t even achieve that level.
Now, you know, I’m annoyed by panning-and-scanning too. I avoid “full-screen” DVDs whenever possible, and was disappointed when I didn’t look closely enough at a used DVD I bought. But does this guy honestly think that a film like Manos or Red Zone Cuba is going to become incredibly wonderful–or even any good at all–if shown in widescreen? Really? I mean, get serious, pal.
I could count on the fingers of one hand the number of MSTed movies that I’d consider watching unedited, unriffed, undubbed, and uncropped–unless I’m in the mood for some serious pain. They’re the Ptushko films and Jack Frost.

It fails as legitimate criticism and it fails even harder as satire. Somebody owes me those five minutes back.
I’ll come out and admit it. For a couple of lines, I kind of started to agree. Then it took a bizarre twist into some sort of hate-filled Narnia.
I agree that if a movie is filmed in widescreen, then that’s how it should be viewed.
However, I get the feeling that pan and scan is the least of the problems on any one of the experiments. If he wanted to validate his argument some, he should have attacked the editing of the films, sometimes even referenced by J&TBs. Instead his beef with MST3k is also true for some 99% of every film shown on TV.
I’d call him a name, but he already used all the good ones.

Good point about this guy probably having had a “personal revelation” brought on by some bitter, know-it-all film teacher. I’m 42 and have just recently gone back to school to get my degree in Animation (and to catch up with the damn industry that left me behind with the acetate cels and latex paints!). And one thing I’ve noticed A LOT, is that kids in their 20’s are probably the most maleable and impressionable people in the world. Even more so than Grade School kids, it seems.
So this “film maker” has decided to buy into the “new school” of film – which basically says that NOTHING is ever “bad” and every film is “good” – as long as you say it’s so and get a good Publicist to back you up. And all to feel validated by some hack “film maker” who couldn’t cut it – and so decided to “teach.”
Just imagine if “Manos: The Hands of Fate” had the marketing dollars that “The Dark Knight” had!
Oh my God. I just scared myself.

Just kidding. I know what you mean. Before the boys started appreciating the merits of such trivial things like “scripts”, “directing” and, oh, things like “rehearsing,” a lot of the host segments were kind of like watching an open mic night at a local Improv. Considering that’s where many of them had just COME from before getting involved in the show, that’s not too surprising. I think Joel was using too many “herbal supplements” at times, too – which doesn’t improve performance. Or, so I’m told.
But as the show went on, some of the bumps were better than some of the riffs during the movie. Especially the ones where Trace just SHINES as Crow.
LOL. And I rarely use the phrase LOL so it’s that ridiculous.
Oh, dearie me. What a can of worms. I agree that FredP up there shouldn’t judge a person on their liberalness (myself being a liberal), and I don’t think you should knock him for having a traditionally feminine name. It’s not very sporting.
I work in the film industry, but I know better than to label myself a “filmmaker”. Those who do are the kind of people with whom I went to school. While I totally endorse people doing their own thing and creating films as the writer/director/producer and distributing them independently, no matter what method they use… frankly, I’ve found it much more useful to get out of the artsy-fartsy university setting and actually work on a film set for a while, and see how people do it fo’ REALS.
And now I’ve got to go watch one of his films! Hee!

Is this clown even aware that widescreen wasn’t invented until the mid-1950s? And not everything was filmed that way even post-1954? (The Leonard Maltin book gives the first year of widescreen as 1954). I doubt that Manos was filmed in widescreen. At least the people who made Future War have a sense of humor, they joked during the production that it would be funny if their movie ended up on the show.
I’m forced to wonder why this place has even bothered giving any form of attention (and thus pagehits) to… well, this. I didn’t look. I have better things to do with my time, like slamming my junk in the car door.
No, really, why? Some random yahoo on the internet doesn’t like the show? Why should any of us give one-tenth of a hint of a damn? Why is this worth our time? A slow news day doesn’t necessitate drawing our attention to somebody’s unimportant self-flagellation. This reeks of baiting, not reporting.

Mr Welles – can you get a wide screen version of Mondo Cane up on your You Tube Channel for me? I would love to watch more but I just can’t continue wondering what brilliance I might be missing in the pan and scan version that you have placed there. I was going to make this request via You Tube but you have disabled comments for the video – something about not wanting to hear opposing opinions. Hope you’re trolling here…. Thanks much.

Wow, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this guy seems to be taking it personally. If he’s not content to watch the MST’d versions of the film, then he should seek out the originals – apparently they’re easier to find!
Wow…one post and suddenly this guy is the target of a passionate community devoted to a show thats been cancelled for a decade.

I got the sense that this was some art-school attending, snobby punk from the moment he started pontificating about the lack of widescreen presentation in their films. Gimme a break! If you want to make even a half-way sensible argument about why you don’t like the show, come up with something logical; for instance, the fact that they edit many (if not all) of their movies, due to time constraints of commercials. For myself, I’ve always wondered if taking out certain scenes affected the overall product of the movie. That’s why I’ve started collecting the movies without the MST treatment. (Some of the early Rhino releases had the full movies unriffed, which helped start that hobby). Having this exposure can only help anyone involved with the movie; would they sell any copies otherwise? I’m guessing not.
Look, this guy admits he’s a former fan of the show, so he’s probably aware of the ensuing feedback that his little rant would cause. In the end, I’m almost certain that it was just a ploy to get people to go to youtube and watch his “film-making” efforts. I, for one, am not biting; I’ve already wasted enough time dealing with his on-line tantrums.
Funny, when the article in question went into the pan-and-scan rant and used clips from both Once Upon A Time In The West, one of the best films ever made, and Godzilla Versus Megalon, one of the silliest movies ever made, I assumed the whole thing was meant to be facetious.
Any valid point he has is invalidated by the school yard-like swearing in most of his last paragraph. Lighten up, Francis.

Since my self returned answers consisting of “nope” and “not really”, I wandered off to play some blasterball in the load pan bay.
I was watching the Kevin/Mike interview attached to Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders on Vol. 5 the other day and reading this made me recall their comments on how they worked to make sure kids would be able to understand the majority of the jokes while adults would pick up on the more risque riffs. Those risque ones are so subtle that I often don’t pick up on their full meaning until the 2nd or 3rd viewing of the episode.
Humor like that takes real talent to achieve and I’ve spoken to people who say they like to riff movies while thinking they’re “funnier” but all of the humor is debased, raunchy, unfunny juvenile locker room jokes. Even Frank gets scolded by the rest of the Cinematic Titanic Crew when he tries one of those in their Santa Conquers the Martians (relating a rocket to a male “member”).
In short, MST3K is not only funny, it’s an absolute work of art and the cast and crew only make it LOOK easy.
That’s the most internet traffic that guy has seen in months. Once he’s forgotten again, he’ll trash Kubrick or The Godfather.

I fell into his trap and visited his YouTube profile. I couldn’t even make it through the first minute of one of his movies. (Excuse me, “films.”) After about thirty seconds, I was longing for Francis Coleman’s sparkling dialogue from “Red Zone Cuba.” I had to turn off the “film” at 38 seconds.
I have to agree with some of the comments about how MST3K made me more appreciative of good filmmaking. I am FAR less likely to get bamboozled by Hollywood thanks to Joel, Mike, and the ‘Bots.

Sometimes, I actually like the movies. I am sweet on Devil Doll, even though it is a prime piece of film garbage. Sometimes the sincerity of the film makers touchs…something, I suppose, internal.
He made his point, now he can NOT watch it as his right as a true blue american.
For the record, I’m a ultra ‘liberal scumbag’, and I’d rather not know anyone else’s persuasion or we will all become a judgemental tools like I am sensing in #7.

Can’t we all just get along? :mrgreen: I’m a right-leaning, ex-Wisconsinite, Green Bay Packer fan and I still like the early MST3K seasons.
I have to get this off my chest, but they guy is 100% correct. Torgo’s performance in “Manos” was completely compromised when the film was reformatted to full-screen, and the full impact of his big knees and twitchy goat legs turned from deep drama into cheap comedy.
And had “Santa Claus Conquers The Martians” not been panned and scanned, Pia Zadora might well have bought a second Golden Globe. Sigh.
I guess if there’s one thing MSTies love it’s a good flame war.
It’s great that people of such varied politics like MST3K. It speaks highly of the art and craft of those who made it.
