Just wait for all the happy comments on Pumaman.

But it’s great to see Shout managed to find the rights holders after all!

Anyway, great set! I definetly knew Untamed Youth was coming up. Hercules and the Captive Women was definetly likely to pop up, same with The Thing that Couldn’t Die.

Keep up the good work, Shout!

Pumaman has almost become the equivalent in legend to the The Green Slime treatment as to guessing when it would be released.

It’s finally over and I lived to see the day, thanks to Shout Factory.

I sound like such a sycophantic twit for Shout, but there it is.

I guess if they ever provided The Green Slime as a bonus down the line I would simply have to sell all my possessions and become a monk for Shout, since at that point, some kind of deity line will have been crossed.

And such a deity would then be able to breach the Arkoff Hart line.

412: – M’eh. Doesn’t floor me, but an EP is an EP!
805: – M’eh, but I grew fond of this one this Halloween. This EP brings me playsure!
903: – Per my understanding, this one was a bit of a surprise based on rights information, thus making this the “SHOUT IS AWESOME!!” entry of the set. I’ll take those ANY day!

    Puma Man!!!!!!!!!

    Shout Factory, I love you.

Also, you get Untamed Youth, one of the better S1 eps, and Gypsy’s famous riffing attempt in Hercules. Thing That Couldn’t Die: don’t remember it all that well to be honest.

But, Puma Man is the HUGE news here.

    Yay Puma Man!

  15. Matt says:

Untamed Youth (my favorite Season 1 episode) and Thing that Couldn’t Die (solid episode but I wasn’t feeling it on my last viewing) were expected. Season 1 will surely be finished by the end of 2014, and I’m guessing Shout will have to skip past the next four episodes of Season 8 (Undead-Teenage Werewolf) and continue to pick up some more Universal owned titles (ie. Riding with Death, Agent for h.a.r.m.). I’m also have hopes for The Incredible Melting Man now that Shout has released the original movie.

Captive Women is a pleasant surprise, it’s definitely my favorite of the three Hercules episodes of Season 4 (Season 5’s “Hercules” might be my favorite overall though). Pretty underrated episode, although the “I have my rights” running gag gets aggravating.

Puma Man is obviously the biggest surprise here. I’m glad for those who have been wanting it for so, so long now, but I’m not too fond of it. I’ve found that this is pretty common with most of the show’s popular episodes. I don’t think it’s a bad episode, just overrated. And it’s my least favorite of these four (not joking at all, I even prefer the Season 1 episode over it). Good set though. Now I’ve got to start watching the new one.

Excellent, excellent stuff. Really pleased about Hercules and the Captive Women. If you don’t remember it fondly, try giving it another shot when the set comes out, I think it’s quite underrated overall and the best of the Hercs.

Pumaman is obviously the big story, but this is another solid set.

You know, I was glad to see people’s excitement for the last couple of sets but I hadn’t formed a strong connection to those episodes (it’s hard to remember what I thought of every episode). But this one? So excited!

And since I just got the most recent set in the mail an hour ago, I love that the raised SOL on the tin includes the stick.

  20. Leave Crow T. Robert Denby Alone says:

Huzzah for Thepumaman! And I loved TTTCD – it’s the one I point out as the place where Bill finally became comfortable as Crow, by becoming the low-toned Observer (now only having to sound different from him, instead of trying to sound similar to Trace). The early Universal titles from Sci-fi get a bad rap, but those were the kinds of movies (B/W, 50’s naive atomic jargon and goofy monsters) I always thought were the norm, and where the writing was at its best in both the Mike and Joel years.

#20, I agree. I first started watching early season 8, so black and white, goofy monster movies were the baseline for me. It was jarring for me to see movies in color on MST3k at first! The Thing That Couldn’t Die was one of a handful of episodes I taped off Sci Fi, and so one of the only ones I could rewatch before Rhino began releasing episodes on DVD. I look forward to seeing Aunt Flava-Flav, the oily phony beat couple, the peeper, big dumb guy (these hands are strong) and the tacky-necklace-hating head who is stored in a hatbox for a time. Don’t forget overnight historian in a robe.
Pumaman also one of my favorites for sure, another one of my taped episodes. Help me, Vandinho! Peek a BOOO.
I’m looking forward to watching the other 2 eps for the first time.

Thanks go out to Shout Factory, for another amazing collection!

And I also gotta chime in and agree with #8 about a little bonus feature that takes a look at how difficult it can sometimes be to find out who owns these film properties. Pumaman would be the prime candidate to examine…

    Today is dedicated to Uranus!

If the first Steve Reeves Hercules is really PD, why hasn’t it been released yet? You’d think Rhino would’ve put it out years ago. I’m guessing there’s some kind of rights issue there. Oh well, some day, I’m sure.

So, this will be Volume XXIX? Think about that: 29! Twenty-nine volumes of MST3k DVDs, plus the handful of individual discs that preceded the boxsets. We MSTies truly have much to be thankful for. (On top of, y’know, freedom, health, family, and all that other good stuff…)

I wonder if there’s any chance of them getting Walter George Alton for an interview on the Pumaman disc. From the looks of his appearance on The Daily Show, he seems to have a sense of humor.

And I have to agree with whoever wanted to see Riding With Death come up next. That’s one’s long overdue.

  34. Ethan Van Sciver says:

Praise Shout Factory. Praise them. THE PUMAMAN.

What I love about Shout Factory is that they went after that episode hard. They heard us. They could have just released any of these public domain eps effortlessly. Instead, they persevered, were honest with us, and ultimately triumphed. Obviously I will buy this set. It’s my single favorite episode. And THE PUMAMAN is a film I’d thoroughly enjoy even without the riffing.

There’s a lot to love here. SF continues to reward us via it’s good relationship with UNIVERSAL. Please release the rest of those Universal films ASAP. RIDING WITH DEATH is a must. THE THING THAT COULDN’T DIE is a lot of fun. I’ll be glad to have that.

I don’t care for the Hercules films, but it’s one more step towards completing season four, so that’s wonderful.

And then there’s the season one gem, UNTAMED YOUTH. I love this episode. Incidentally, Mamie Van Doren appeared on WHAT’S MY LINE? as the Mystery Guest when this film was first released in theaters, and she tried to promote it. The panel was perplexed. “Untamed Youth?” It might be worth finding that clip and including it in any documentary made for the DVD.

Happy Thanksgiving, Shout Factory. I’m grateful, once again, for you. :)

Hey, Ethan! I’d heard you were a MSTie. (In fact, I came across online a sketch of Tom Servo as a Green Lantern you did and colored it digitally just for fun. Yup, that’s the sort of thing I do in my free time.)

Since Shout seem to have figured out the rightsholders question, when can we expect the Pumaman comic book by Ethan Van Sciver? Excuse me, graphic novel. ;-) A nice, oversized hardcover. I’ll be waiting for the Kickstarter.

This is fantastic!! The Thing that Couldn’t Die is one of the couple of eps where I saw the movie first (and liked it) and then later they did it as an episode. It along with Pumaman are two of my faves and ones I rewatch a lot. I haven’t seen Untamed Youth so I’m excited about that too. Thanks Shout!!

  38. Here’s hoping Shout interviews Walter George Alton or Miguel Ángel Fuentes for THE PUMAMAN. I think Walter is a lawyer now, and even appeared on THE DAILY SHOW. For Miguel they could also address DEATHSTALKER AND THE WARRIORS FROM HELL.

    HELL YEAH!

Thank you Shout Factory for delivering Puma Man to DVD at last. This episode has been
wanted for years, it’s awesome they finally tracked down the rights holder. Can’t
    wait to find out who.

The rest of the set is solid, another Hercules movie and The Thing That Couldn’t Die
are most welcome. Thing was the one that was expected the most.

    Can’t wait for this one!

Interesting tidbit from Joel’s AMA where he revealed these new titles:

-Now that Cinematic Titanic is winding down, do you have any other projects in the works besides “Riffing Myself”?
    [–]Joel_Hodgson_[S] 87 points 5 hours ago
I do, but I can’t talk about them right now. But I will be on the reddit Black Friday special on this Friday 11/29 on their YouTube so keep an eye out: http://www.youtube.com/reddit

Wonder what Joel’s up to that he can’t talk about till Turkey Day…hmmmm….

From Joel’s Reddit AMA: “One last thing. As I’m sure you know, it is unlikely that the majority of MST3K episodes will be released on video or download, as their riffed content is ensnared in various legal issues. … With that in mind, do we have your blessing, aside from the episodes available for commercial purchase, to keep circulating (the modern equivalent of) the tapes?”

Joel: “Never underestimate the attorneys at Shout! Factory. You can take that however you want.”

You know, we’re well over the 50% mark for episodes already released (by my estimate 82%), and based on the list in #7 (thanks), between Shout’s great work and the many remaining rights holders who are amenable, i think this question will continue to be less and less relevant.

Rob #17 – Steve Reeves will always be THE Herc as far as I’m concerned, but I DO remember being pleasantly surprised by a recent viewing of Captive Women”. It has decent host segments too, with good-natured brawling and Crow’s history of Herc being especially awesome!

Let me spell you there, young man!

Pet Pu-Mayman! Captive Women is my second favorite Herc movie (first is Moon Men), but it was my first episode so there’s some sentimentality there. Haven’t seen Untamed Youth. And I love The Thing That Wouldn’t Die.

@23 They weren’t my baseline since I started in season 4, but I always wanted to see them done, especially Deadly Mantis & Teenage Werewolf, which I saw as a kid.

bad wolf #42 – My math is 50 EPS remaining, 176 total EPS (not counting KTMA since we haven’t seen even ONE official KTMA DVD), so 72%-ish has been released. Still, I just looked at my “Red Zone Cuba” DVD (my first Mst3k DVD) and my Volume 1 box set and remembered how great it was to finally be able to buy MST3K eps in such awesome quality for viewing whenever I wanted. I had no idea that we would see SO many releases! I just glanced up at my Gamera tin and am currently watching “Day the Earth Froze” on DVD, my fave ever and ever, Amen. Nice.
I take Joel’s comment at face value. I think it’s by no means a guarantee that we will eventually see ALL EPs officially released, but I do agree that Shout is doing great things! Being uber-surprised, albeit pleasantly, at Puma Man’s release is proof that we DO underestimate them!
