I hope it’s just a problem with the online clip, but I could barely hear the short – while the Riffers boomed. Reminds me of some early Rhino MST discs before they got their mixes (mostly) right.

  8. What!? A “best of” that doesn’t include “One Got Fat?!”

    Simply false advertising, that is.

“Drugs are Like That” is definitely one of the best, though. And none of them are bad . . . though some lack a bit more luster than others.

    The animated thing should be . . . um . . . interesting . . .

I love rifftrax, but those animated things look simply awful to me. Like mst3k.com awful.

  10. Well, I am definitely getting this, but I have a feeling I will still be burning together my own collections. I never did like how they mix their ducking… It kinda gives me a headache.

Either way, they get my money.

  11. Ummm… Cool, works for me.

I do have Drugs Are Like That, but no problem.

What’s it going to cost, anyway?

Yeah, One Got Fat and If Mirrors could Speak are my two best. I havent seen the last 3 they released though. Still, if its Vol. 1, they have to leave some good stuff for the next volumes.

The mixes do seem to vary. On some, the riffing is barely audible while the short is booming loud, then others have loud riffing while the short can’t hardly be heard. On my own burns, I tried to group similar loudness’ together so I wouldnt have to keep grabbing the remote to change the volume.

Come on, release the Fred Willard one and the 3 riffers Plan 9 already

I’m one of the technologically challenged fans, so maybe someone can confirm something for me as it was never actually said. Does the Rifftrax shorts DVD include the actual Riffs? I know it seems obvious, but I want to make sure before I spend the cash. I don’t want to get the shorts but still have to download the riffs.

Yes, they do include the riffs.

I too own every short on this disc with the obvious exception of the new one. I still think I’ll get it. And yes, the riffs are included, just like the actual downloads. Also did anyone else notice that now Kevin is a different type of snack receptical and Bill a kind of *bird*? Pretty sneeky, but funny.

  19. Dames Like Her says:

I own all of these. I buy any short they do. I imagine they may release ‘Shake Hands With Danger’ as a single short.
I have yet to indulge in a regular Rifftrax; I prefer the combo served up for me. Love their shorts, but my finances dictate to pass on this for now.

  20. underwoc says:

Creepygirl (#19): I was wondering about that too. After Kevin’s year at the movies, the popcorn sort of makes sense, but I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why Bill should be a parrot and Mike should be a Mike unless they were deliberately channeling the old show.

But, that said, I’d be surprised if we see too many more animated riffers. I just looks like too much effort for the effect.

I just popped on over to Rifftrax and preordered the dvd. I can’t wait! Between CT, Shout Factory’s incredible release rate and now Rifftrax dvd’s it’s going to be a banner year for MST fans!

Sweet, I’m looking forward to this. I’ve bought about 6 Rifftrax in the past, but I’ve found I’m too lazy to keep syncing up the audio when the movie is playing.

  27. Finally, a Rifftrax product I can get behind.

    I like my shiny discs.

On the other hand, I know they don’t want to tread on CT and use silhouettes, but those 3D models are *freaky*!

And on yet another note, how do those “Incognito Cinema Warriors XP” guys escape being sued?

I enjoy rifftrax. I really do, but the picture of Mike making that face is really annoying. I don’t know why it bothers me, but it seems…just kind of weak. This is a very small point and I really look forward to this, but…yeah, annoying face. Long live Mike Nelson and company,

  29. Mark D. says:

A small point, admittedly, but I agree with some of the others that the “animated riffers”
are kind of silly and/or creepy.

Which leads to this question: Since there is nowhere else that we can ever get “new” Mike/Crow/Servo “silhouetted” riffs (unless, of course, there are still some MST3K fans that haven’t yet seen ALL of the old shows!), would there ever be a chance that for future dvd Rifftrax releases, “the guys” could be bothered to film a new (live, real-time) “silhouette”, specifically for those releases?

I realize it might sound like alot to ask, but wouldn’t the effort required actually be a small price to pay, when seen as “payback” to all the old MST fans who have helped make Rifftrax the VERY successful venture it is today?

    Just some food for thought…..

@ Those who are complaining about their favorite shorts not being on this release:

Realize that this is just volume 1. Meaning that if this sells well enough there will be a volume 2. I’m pretty sure you’ll find the rest of your current favorites on that release.

I just hope that they end up releasing every short they’ve done on DVD and don’t pick and choose as the “Best of” title seems to imply.

After all, the DVD’s have a lot more space on them than to hold 10 shorts. So, I hope that volume 2 (Assuming that there will be one) will include the rest of their 2008 shorts.

There’s got to be funnier things than the front of this cover has to offer … at least in the next D.V.D., make Mike Nelson the magician he was when I first seen the Rifftrax come out; rip off Bart Simpson and make Kevin Murphy a spiky-head creation, except make him just a head and give him small tentacles with a spatchula on the right and skiis on or for his feet; For Bill Corbet, make him like an Observer again, only give him really cool bear trap-esque metalic teeth, and a bandana, ooh, and pteradactyl wings.

seeing those silhouettes in my peripheral vision almost tricks me into thinking its a mst3k-Almost-but its still better than the 3D. ive commisioned my little girl into making a larger cardboard cutout.

Suggestion for Rifftrax Shorts DVD, whichever Shorts dvd gets released next year at about this time “A Visit To Santa” preceded by the RT sketch A Holiday Greeting From Rifftrax. I misunderstood thinking this close to the holidays it would be on this first one, but I suppose this is a test of how the DVDs would sell.

For my own part, I wasn’t complaining. I was merely pointing out the irony/misleadingness of the term “Best of” in this context.

I don’t plan on buying the collection anyway, since I already own all of the shorts, so I have nothing serious to complain about. Except the creepy animated . . . things, as everyone has noted.

I do hope they release the one additional short as a stand-alone download, though.

  38. No, the animated characters are fine, you guys are being dweebs, as usual.

Seriously, I think Bill is supposed to be kind of a dodo bird/Bill hybrid.

    No no, *feebs.* Feebs.

And no, they are creepy, disturbing, and unsettling.

“Seriously, I think Bill is supposed to be kind of a dodo bird/Bill hybrid.”

Dodos were indeed known for their bright, macaw-like plumage and habit of sitting on people’s shoulders, yes.

    ;p

  41. Hmmm. Yeah, you’re right. Doesn’t look like a dodo. And you guys are *feebs*. And they are creepy, disturbing and unsettling, but that’s the in-thing now. Look at Tom Hanks in that pseudo-holiday movie. Horror Express, I think it was called.

  42. Zee says:

The animated Bill and Kevin are terrible! Bill doing a bird-like character after doing Crow smacks of rip-off and the Kevin’s is just horrifyingly stupid looking. I’d rather they just made big-head caricatures of them like they did for the (admittedly bland) Mike character.

Other than that I want this. I only own “Drugs are Like That”- HILARIOUS- and “Skipper Learns a Lesson”- Underwhelming given the source material.

I could care less about the animated whatever it is but since I don’t own any of these shorts I will be getting this one. Here is hoping a good run on these dvds will get them to release some rifftraxs of movies that could be sold on dvd from them (public domain sorts of things).

(re: norgavue) I hope so, too. I loved FILM CREW and I love CINEMATIC TITANIC, but the Rifftrax concept (aside from the shorts) has never worked that well for me.

The popcorn Kevin is pretty cool, but why the hell is Bill a bird wearing pajamas? They should have turned Bill into a coke bottle or a hotdog. Also they need to bring back Disembaudio the toaster.

    1. I love the Rifftrax shorts, i’ve already got 2/3s of these. They are the closest thing to feeling like an old MST3K episode.

    2. The animated characters are uncomfortable.
Anybody ever heard of the “Uncanny Valley”?
The uncanny valley is a hypothesis that when robots and other facsimiles of humans look and act almost like actual humans, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers. The “valley” in question is a dip in a proposed graph of the positivity of human reaction as a function of a robot’s lifelikeness. – from Wiki

The new characters are definitely nestled deep in the uncanny valley! Quasi-realistic in a way that feels creepy.

Also much of the screen is taken up by the room the characters are in and having so much stuff in the foreground detracts from the viewing experience.

Good try but the clear result is YIKES! The new Crow is disturbing!

  49. “The new characters are definitely nestled deep in the uncanny valley! Quasi-realistic in a way that feels creepy.”

Yeah, but even *conceptually* they’re disconcerting. The UV only really applies to things that look approximately human, not to human-bird hybrids or snack receptables with human faces. Even with perfect realism, things like that would be – or certainly could be – off-putting. (Hell, with perfect realism they could be *more* freakish, if you think about stuff like that actually *exisiting* . . .)

The UV may be part of an evolutionary mechanism to identify and avoid (well, avoid reproducing with, at least) human individuals with visible diseases and deformities. AFAIK it doesn’t really apply to distinctly non-human entities, since they’re “off the radar” anyway, so to speak. That’s why Crow and Servo are still endearing – they’re way off on the non-human side of the Valley, not really inside it.

And so I think that the UV is only part of the explanation here . . .
