Here’s what Shout is telling us now:
* They’re releasing a collector’s edition Blu-ray/DVD combo. Both discs will have identical content. The cover will be the original theatrical poster; and it’ll have a reverse cover with new art from Steve Vance.
* There may be more extras, but these are the extras that are definite:
— The Making of Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie (the EPK that fans have probably seen around)
— Two new docs from Ballyhoo: “Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie: The Motion Picture Odyssey” (including new interviews with cast and crew and never-before-seen behind the scenes footage) and “This Island Earth: 2 1/2 Years In the Making.”
— Original trailer.
Update: And for those who have been asking:
— Deleted scenes including the removed sequences from the riffed motion picture and the alternate ending.
I know people are going to start asking about other extras. The answer, up front, is we don’t know … yet. You’ll know when we do.
Incidentally, if you’d like to pre-order, we’d be happy if you’d use one of the following links:
I know I’ve said this many times in the past, but it bears repeating….
Shout Factory? I love you. :inlove:

Shout Factory, you magnificent bastards!

I didn’t think we’d ever get a nice anamorphic print of the movie, I’m very excited for this.

With the missing scenes? Please oh please!

Nice! I like the Ballyhoo docs they have done.
Now please please PLEASE do not have any of those ****ty CGI menus like they do on the episode sets!

Can’t wait to hear more details. One thing we know for sure is that Shout and Ballyhoo put a lot of time, effort and honest to goodness love of the topic into eachproject that should make every MSTie look forward to each new release.

This sounds great! Please oh PLEASE let them include the deleted scenes! And maybe even the movie version of the theme song (haha, I’ll get my head out of the clouds now).

I hope I’m employed long enough to get it!! I’ve always wanted to see those extras!!! This is going to be awesome!!! :inlove: :-D

Shout! is just amazing. I too hope that the deleted scenes will be added.

Freakin’ sweet! I’ve been waiting for this for a while. It looks so good in HD when I stream it on Netflix, so I’m really looking forward to this release!

I love those CGI menus! There’s no accounting for taste, I suppose.

@11 I like them too so you aren’t alone!
Exciting stuff Shout, thank you!

Shout! Factory, I could marry you. And if the Supreme Court continues to uphold that corporations are people, maybe I will. But if Shout is male we’ll have to be wed here in New York. Would you be willing to leave California for our love, dear Shout?
I was wondering if this would be coming, what with their licensing other Universal flicks. I can’t imagine Shout would put the movie out without the deleted scenes, as long as the original footage still exists. Maybe massage Jim’s with an “official extended director’s cut.”

That should be “massage Jim’s ego,” not “massage Jim.” But if that’s what it takes… Fingers crossed!
I look forward to new interviews. Remember when movies looked to be the figure of MST3k?

Excellent! Thanks again, Shout Factory! My only problem is at this point it’s not possible for me to watch the Blu-ray, but I’ll buy the combo anyway just for the DVD. I can’t afford to get a Blu-ray player and upgrade my other discs unless I win the lottery or something, and my laptop doesn’t have a Blu-ray drive, so DVD it is for now. And I’m totally OK with that.
Well it’s about dang time! Once again Shout Factory shows how awesome they are.
And ditto about the deleted scenes, maybe they’ll even include a director’s cut if we’re lucky.
Also just pre-ordered it because I can.

Y’know, you don’t have to upgrade your DVDs with a Blu-Ray player. It will play the old discs, and even make them look better. (Or so I’m told. I haven’t gotten an HDTV yet… I’s not just that they’re expensive – my old 36″ Trinitron still works fine. Also it weighs about six tons. I guess I could hang a flatscreen from the old CRT…)

Obviously the disc needs to have the deleted “storm shelter scene” and the alternative ending… even roughcuts would be better than what fans have right now.
Does this mean that future episodes will be released in Blu-Ray?
I’m in.
@19: Doubt it, since the show was never shot on film or with HD cameras – the visual upgrade would be negligible. So this is the only MST3K Blu-Ray we’re likely to get. (I think.)

This is very awesome news. Although the inclusion of deleted scenes (or better yet the afformentioned “director’s cut”, crossing my fingers!) will be my deciding factor whether or not to throw down the scratch to pick this baby up

I hope we get a Blu Ray of This Island Earth un-mstied as well..
This will be a great release ! :)

I am going to add my Oh Please Oh Please Oh Please on the deleted scenes. Saw them at the second convention. This would be a must buy preorder. It would join my Laser Disc and Dvd copies in a place of honor.

How about using the cut-by-Universal movie version of the theme for the menus?
In any case, this looks like a very good one. It won’t be the massively-complete four-disc set of my dreams, but it’s way better than I expected.
I could ask exactly how Shout manages to pull these off, but I won’t. I don’t want to spoil the magic.

Interesting that they’re taking the DVD/Blu-Ray combo tack, instead of just DVD. I guess they didn’t feel the market would support both versions, but people would demand a Blu-Ray.
Also, this is one release that would really benefit from having the original film on the disc and a way to watch the footage cut for the MST version. As has been mentioned before, the runtime of TIE is *longer* than that of MST3K:TM. Yes, even with the host segments and new credits.
For my dream bonus feature, I wish they could pack in a copy of the This Island Earth novel. It’s worth reading, IMO. (By the way. Are there any other MST’d movies based on books or stories? I mean, ignoring Hercules and Hamlet and Sinbad and Riding with Death and the like [i.e. folklore/myth/classical and very-very-loosely-based-but-credited-anyway]. Oh, yeah, just remembered Outlaw [of Gor] and Fugitive Alien 1 and 2. Maybe that’s a list worth making?)

Shout Factory is a godsend! The best thing to happen to MST3K! Thank you!

@25 I think going the combo DVD/BR path is a great idea. I would think that would have to help sales since there are a lot of people that were begging for a BR version, but still a lot of people out there with DVD players.

Yay!!! Shout factory does it again! Im getting two!

@25 The Deadly Bees, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, and Kitten with a Whip were based on novels/stories as well.

“Space Travellers” is based on “Marooned”, a very good novel by Martin Caidin. It’s interesting in that it was originally published in 1964, involving a Mercury spacecraft, and was revised and updated by the author for a tie-in release with the movie.
Oh, any chance Shout can get Mark Hamill to narrate the “making of” doc?
Sampo, if we want to pre-order this, do you have a link so that it will benefit Satellite News?
Oh man, I’m going to sound really ignorant, but what are these deleted scenes everyone is talking about? Like deleted “host” segments, or stuff cut from the riffed movie itself?

@25 and 27: Being one of those people, I love the combo pack idea in general. It means I can have a DVD copy while stockpiling Blus for a future collection. The only downside is, usually, the DVD disc is feature-only (looking at you, Disney). Being a guy who loves his extras, this is a deterrent. The fact that Shout! is being awesome enough to port over the extras between both discs is sheer bliss.
That said, there really needs to be room for the original TIE as well. Some sort of commentary would be nice, and including it on the full-length TIE seems ideal.
@Kenneth Morgan: What would be on your Four Disc Uber-Set?

Oh, I don’t care if that’s all we’re going to get, but after two bare-bones releases from Universal, we have GOT to get this.
Once again, Shout! has done its traditional miracle. Well done!

live show footage would be neat

Aren’t they ALL movies, in one sense?
and of course, SHOUT! rides again!

We love you Shout! Factory, but… PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE INCLUDE THE DELETED SCENES/ALTERNATE ENDING! Otherwise DON’T BOTHER!!!!!

@4
Ditto!
This is so great. Big shout for Shout Factory!

@ 25 and 29: Devil Doll was also adapted from a print medium story. A lot of movies are adapted from the print media, including some you wouldn’t suspect, like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Die Hard.

Best news I’ve heard today!
Like others, I’m really hoping we get the deleted scenes included AND see them cut into the movie itself. They are just too damn good, and completed, to let lay by the wayside.

I think I’m going to cry..Thanks Shout! You are the best!

A feature length Cast commentary whoud be great too. They coud riff themselves riffing !

I’m with #32 darkknight, I didn’t know there were deleted scenes. If this bluray has deleted scenes I will buy it, otherwise my HD version I recorded off HBO a few years back still looks great.

#32 (Darkknight): Beyond all the stuff cut from TIE itself, there were two major host segments (the “storm shelter” sequence, and the original ending) that were filmed but cut by the *&^%$#@#$% at Universal/Grammercy. They were shown at ConventioCon II and fan tapings of that are readily available.
#33 (KidFlash25): I posted this a while back, but my idea of an absolute ultimate edition would be:
Disc 1: The movie in widescreen, with trailers, TV spots, photos and “making of” doc.
Disc 2: TIE in widescreen, with commentary, trailers, interviews with surviving cast members and “making of” doc.
Disc 3: Video of the live tryout of the cast riffing on the full version of TIE from ConventioCon I, with other footage from the Con.
Disc 4: “Incredible Melting Man”, as presented on the show, with trailers, “making of” doc, and an intro as to how the Brains used the host segments for sweet revenge.
I know I won’t get this, but I’m sure Shout will provide a fine release.

AFFA,
Thanks for asking about a link to Amazon that would benefit us. I’ve updated Sampo’s post with that link. Everyone please use it if you’d like to pre-order the combo. Here it is in case you don’t want to scroll back up the page:

Allow me to add my vote for a Director’s Cut.

What would be really cool would be to have a feature where you could watch MST3K: TM with the missing scenes from This Island Earth shown at the places where they were edited out of the movie so we could get a better feel for the plot of TIE while watching MST3K: TM. Those segments would be fine unriffed, but it would be amazing if Rifftrax, Cinematic Titanic, or any permutation/combination of those two groups would add riffing to those segments.

Deleted scenes… maybe a special cut of the film with those back in. Otherwise, I won’t buy this until it’s on sale. Happy with what I have.

#47 and #48….love both ideas

There could be an icon -let’s say Crow’s head – that pops up in the corner that alerts you that a scene was cut from the original movie, and you could hit a button to see the scene, then go back to the riffing. Except it would actually work this time. :-D
Actually, some of the cuts they made to This Island Earth are really tiny, so that wouldn’t be feasible. Amazon says this is a 2 disc set, though, so they’re probably including the complete This Island Earth unriffed, like their Manos set. Not that it’s a particularly entertaining movie…
