Weekend Discussion Thread: Episode Viewing Patterns

When I first started doing the episode guide, one of the things I began to notice in the comments was people talking about whether this or that episode was their “regular rotation.” Which delighted me, because how many other TV shows from the 1990s do people have defined viewing habits about?

Alert regular Rick is curious about yours:

I have been watching MST for 13 years since cancellation. How I pick episodes to view, and when to watch them, have varied over the years.
When my kids were young, we’d take 197 pieces of paper, number them with each episode and place them in a hat for a drawing. While often we didn’t agree, whatever number that was picked was that night’s episode.
Later, I watched the show in numerical order- from 2002- early 2008 going through the series nearly four times.
Two episodes weekly were viewed, commencing at 11 p.m. in the basement on Friday and Saturday nights.
For the next couple of years, episodes were picked at random, or, situations. (One time my GF was making stew, I knew I had to watch “Track of the Moon Beast.”)
Times viewed were on a supply and demand basis. If my lovely GF wanted to watch episodes, I’d dig deep and surprise her with “EEGAH” or “A Touch of Satan”
We had our own Turkey Day Marathon, as well as other weekend marathons on a whim. Does anyone out there plan on their own personal Turkey Day Marathon this year? If so, what episodes are you watching?
Lately there are two things going on- I have been watching every Sunday from 6-8 PM (the original slot for the KTMA gang) – it’s real comfort food and a nice way to wind down from the weekend and get ready to watch Dexter.
I’ve also resurrected the Friday and Saturday 11 p.m. slot — something tells me that’s when the show is best viewed.
Presently, I’m moving season to season- one night select one from season nine and move to season four the following.
What are some of the patterns do the members of this board developed over the years?

Well, I used to watch an episode a week with my elderly mother (back when we she lived with me). She loved it. We watched it in episode number order. The notes I took during those viewings were the core of what is now the episode guide. And as you know, I continue to watch an episode a week in episode number order. I don’t foresee stopping that.

What’s your viewing pattern? And while we’re at it, are there any particular routines — like foods/beverages you like to consume, traditions you have, whatever?

Can’t say I have any traditions, per se, except watching new eps immediately when I get them. I do have a group of go-to episodes which always makes me laugh. These include the Coleman Francis trinity, the crime episodes (like Sinister Urge, Kitten With A Whip, etc.) I pretty much watch them whenever the mood strikes me, especially before bed. I find having a good laugh makes it so much easier to sleep. :-)

In number order, but ever since history became legend and
legend became myth of the times told of “videotape” and the
time the elders tell of “Beta” I’ve gone by dvd releases,
although in extremis there is the youtube avenue to see what
    nonreleases are like.

I tend to go through genre phases. So while I might be bouncing around the episode order, I tend to be streaky in watching the same type of movie.
I also dont like to get too much of Joel without seeing some Mike and vis-a-versa. I also tend to watch alot more in the fall and winter than in summer.

I had tried at one point putting numbers into a bag (one for each episode number) and drawing them but actually gave up on that after I drew the first number because I wasnt “feeling” that kind of movie at the time.
Dont really have a routine of when to watch. but, I do like the idea of watching one on sunday evening before Dexter! whenever I watch on late at night I usually fall asleep before the end. I love that it is there in case I wake up. reminds me of when I would watch it on Comedy Central at night and go to sleep 30 minutes into it but sometimes wake up and catch the ending.

OH, I do have a Santa Double Feature around Christmas time!

actually came on the site today to see what other episodes people are talking about as I want to watch something else, too.

love reading what yall have said, and look forward to seeing more!

Sometimes the Satellite News episode guide inspires me to watch an episode, but most of the time I just pick at random. And like most MSTies I’m sure, I watch each episode fully naked.

I now have a large enough collection that I go after ones that I hadn’t seen in a while, or that I let myself ignore because I had thought of as dull. But since I was weaned on Sci-Fi eps, those are the ones I tend to get nostalgic for, when I’ve seen like six or seven Joel eps.

On a completely off-topic note, The Onion has a D-list review of David (Time Chasers) Giancola’s new documentary about Anna Nicole Smith – I only mention it because of a long streak of Time Chasers callbacks that appear down the thread a-piece. Apparently, a David Giancola film really is something you wouldn’t want to see.

I always watch an episode the day before it shows up for discussion. Otherwise, it’s pretty much picked at random whenever I’m in the mood for some MST3K. Though I did once watch all the episodes I had at the time in order when I did my MST3K and the Bechdel Test project.

We watch one every Saturday morning, during breakfast. Currently, we’re going through them in order, from the first one I have (KTMA’s Gamera vs. Barugon). Just this morning we watched Superdome. It takes the guesswork out of which episode to watch.

Before we started on this cycle, I tried grouping the movies together. Japanese movies, monster movies, space travel, things coming from space, giant bugs/things, teen movies, etc. And I’d try to find eps that crossed over or fit into the next category. (Example, during the giant things phase, we watched Villages of the Giants, which led into the teen movie category.) Yeah, I know, but, hey, it was MST, and much more fun to think about than my job at the time.

Wow- so flattered my topic was chosen. Here’s a couple more patterns I have- my lovely GF reminds me the other day as she was digging through her purse, I thought of the jump suited teacher in Angel’s Revenge and we viewed that later. A discussion of Ham led to Devil Doll.

When watching a film, like, Porky’s- which had Kim Catrall and Eric Christmas we treated ourselves to a heapin’ helping of City Limits and Code Name:Diamond Head.

Or, we had a Peter Graves marathon: SST Death Flight, It Conquered the World, Beginning of the End and Clonus- plus that episode he allegedly narrated.

Finally, when a Shout! set comes out- well, that dominates the TV- and, like many, I am waiting for the Postman- PLEASE MR. POSTMAN- do you have a package for me? Speaking of packages- time to watch Cave Dwellers.

Well, until recently I would have a rotation of watching the Rhino and Shout! DVDs in order with a random non-commercial release episode on YouTube sometimes. Since Shout has apparently secured the rights to several then-considered long shot episodes, I now just stick to my rotation of DVD sets in order, as I prefer to wait and watch an unseen episode on DVD. Right now I’m in middle of rewatching Volume XXII.

Back when my brother and I still lived with our parents, we would usually watch an episode a week. Either Friday or Saturday night. No particular episode, just whatever we felt like watching. Except when a new DVD came out. We always watched those ones first.

The block of 810-Giant Spider Invasion through 820-Space Mutiny I can watch (or more often, listen to) consecutively and it never gets tiring. But for Joel episodes the ones that get more time are:

    413-Manhunt In Space
    417-Crash of the Moons
    424-Manos
    504-Secret Agent Super Dragon
    510-Painted Hills
    512-Mitchell

I just purchased the remaining Sandy Frank eps and am going to try watching the entire Sandy Frank cycle one day.

I simply watch the episodes I enjoy the most when I’m in the mood and have time. Some get viewed several times a year, some rarely get watched at all. The exception is when a new DVD set is released. Then I try and watch each DVD in the set at least once soon after it arrives, then I watch my favorites one or more times soon again. I may back off of a favorite for a while after watching it a lot the first year or so right after the DVD becomes available, then come back to it after it’s had time to get a bit more fresh again.

Example, First Spaceship On Venus gets viewed more than many other episodes in my home because it’s not only a favorite for me, but for my wife and son as well. My homemade copy got viewed a lot and now that we have a nice DVD from Shout! Factory it still gets viewed more than many other episodes.

No real viewing pattern for me, either, I just pick what I feel like watching. Sometimes, if I’m down, I’ll pick an ep that I know for sure will have me laughing out loud. Other times, I want a surprise and will pick one I barely remember. Sometimes I’ll watch a bunch of themed eps close together, like giant bug movies, evil scientist movies, etc.

My only holiday viewing is that I watch “The Final Sacrifice” on Canada Day while drinking beer. Rowsdower!! I’ve been know to watch “Bride of the Monster” for Christmas, which makes no sense at all.

    Any ep, anytime.

MST/Rifftrax/CT are great to drift off to sleep to, since once you know the movie, it’s all verbal and you don’t have to actually watch. We did that for years, but now it’s often interspersed with various H. Jon Benjamin comedies (Dr. Katz/Home Movies/Archer). The only problem is that, after years of this habit, when we watch MSTs at other times, we tend to get sleepy!

Right now, my wife is spending her Saturday morning watching the CT version of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. I’m sure more of the Christmas themed episodes will make their appearance in the coming days.

No restrictive pattern for me either, but for time, it’s usually around midnight, like I did back when I was younger, and would act like I was running my own TV station, I would present an MST episode as the “Nightshift Movie.”

I too have done the whole ‘put numbers on a piece of paper and pick randomly’ thing. Also have done the entire series in episode order, and by date the movie was made order.
Other than that, I try to make double or triple features based on plot or names (Giant Spider Invasion, Earth vs the Spider, Horrors of Spider Island), or actors (Dick Contino = Daddy-O, Girls Town) (Depressing Dad = Teenage Werewolf and High School Bigshot), etc.

I never go in any kind of DVD order. Actually, I try to buy the original DVDs of the movies and put the MST3K DVD in those cases, so people think I have really terrible taste in movies.

I have a perhaps-too-elaborate system, which I started back during the Great Drought (after the show was dropped, but before the advent of CT & RT).

I divide my selections up between the Original Stuff (episodes, specials, shorts collections, etc.) and the Outside Stuff (CT, RT, con appearances, etc.). I’ll select a card from each category at random from a popcorn can (Original Stuff) or a steel Tel-Vue mug (Outside Stuff). I watch the Outside Stuff on Saturday nights (after “It Takes a Thief”) and the Original Stuff on Sunday nights (after I call my Mom).

I’ll occasionally go outside the rotation for special reasons, like Melon Drop specials before New Years (and I’m still looking for the ’86 special), or if I go to a live event. And, if anyone else wants to follow my choices, I still post them on the old Even Deeper Blurting board. And I keep track of the dates when I watch each selection.

Now, if only I could be that meticulous with my budget…

Unless I’m watching a new DVD set, I usually watch episodes in chronological order. I just season nine. There are times when I don’t do that, in which case I go to old stand-by episodes like The Skydivers and I Accuse My Parents. Right now I’m going to watch the Christmas episodes.

We – my wife and I watch the episodes in episode order, with one exception. We put off the Santa Claus movies until the Christmas season, which we watch along with Die Hard, my younger son’s ultimate Christmas movie. Then we watch the Film Crew movies in order, then CT and RT. With the rapidity RT is putting out product, we are in anticipation of a lot of unseen footage. I am rather a stickler about this. We just saw 801: Revenge of the Creature on a DAP DVD, so we will have to anticipate the Shout Factory release until the next go around.

For the last 3 and a half years, I watch Mst3k with my friends (anywhere between 3 to 15 people on a given night) on Sundays at 9:00 pm. It has been an incredible experience. We have had costume parties, trivia nights for Mst3k-related prizes, and, of course, special drinks made for certain movies (Schlitz for Mitchell; Corpse Reviver for the Corpse Vanishes.) We are attempting to watch every episode except the KTMA ones and are 42 away from achieving this.

As far as the actual selections methods go, this has changed throughout time. We started with what we were given: the episodes we had via Rhino VHS and DVDs and a handful of season 5 & 6 episodes a co-worker had burned for me on DVD. At this time, I never thought we would keep watching this show every Sunday; I thought after a handful of the classics (Pod People, Manos, etc.) we would move on. But as I received more DVDs, we kept going.

First, we selected by funniest sound movie title. After we realized that most of the titles had nothing to do with the movie, I went online and looked up what top 10 lists. Then I started selecting from a hat. Then I asked everybody which were the 5 they most wanted to see. Then we did Netflix and a lot of season ten for some reason. Then I started to buy all the Shout Factory! DVDs and we watched those episodes. Then I computed how many episodes we had left and found out, somehow, we had an even number of Mike and Joel episodes left so we are currently alternating Joel-Mike episodes until we are done.

    I love Sundays.

When I had them on video tape seasons 2 through 5 with Joel where mixed up and Mike’s eps 5 through 7 also. Most of 8 through 10 were in order but a few random eps out of order. When I got dvd’s I would keep it in the order i first taped them but then I went to all dvd’s I watch them in order stating with ktma eps and watch all of them to the end. Then I watch rifftrax and cinema titanic and like a mental patiant I start all over again I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done it!

  28. Professor Gunther says:

My wife and I tend to sit at the dinner table and decide which episode we’re going to watch (that is, when we actually have time to watch episodes), and we do so by coming up with four episodes to choose from. If one of us is feeling lazy or tired, the other will create the list; usually, however, we select two episodes each. The process can become quite ornate, however. For example, we usually ask the other’s PFA (Probability of Falling Asleep). If our PFAs are high, we usually pick a cozy episode that we enjoy falling asleep to (maybe Giant Gila Monster). More generally, we’ll ask each other what kind of a mood we’re in (examples, “Japanese,” or maybe “big bugs”). We’ll also ask each other how “vulnerable” we’re feeling. If we’ve had a hard day, for example, Manos is right out. (To be honest, Manos is usually right out.) It is very, very rare that either of us is in the mood for a particular host (Joel or Mike), but on occasion it is a determining factor. (And at the risk of disappointing some, I will confess that we like BOTH Joel and Mike equally.) Sometimes we’ll be in a mood for a particular season (8, for example: we both LOVE Season 8).

[Invariably, while we’re hashing out the above, my wife will interject at some point with, “more squid eyes?” :-)]

Yes, it’s all rather silly, but we both love MST3K, and finding just the right epidode for that night is definitely a ritual we enjoy.

It occurs to me that my response might not quite get at this topic thread (which I like a lot, by the way), but I’m just going to respond with, “yes we do.”

  29. Professor Gunther says:

Snacks and Beverages: a friend of mine once said, “you must eat a lot of popcorn, like a few nights a week,” and my reply was, “No, we eat popcorn EVERY night.” My wife LOVES popcorn, so we always eat popcorn with our episode. I don’t always eat popcorn, though; it’s a mood thing. I will confess, however, that I almost ALWAYS drink a Guinness while we’re watching an episode, and then I like to have a little brandy after that. My wife is a brandy drinker (NOT, I hasten to add, at the level of a Samuel Taylor Coleridge, or anything like that), so she always has brandy with the episode.

We also have a complicated snack routine we go through with our pets while we’re watching an episode (we have a dog, five cats, and a rabbit), but I’m not going to go into that.

I tend to focus more on episodes from between Seasons 4 and 7, my favorite era of the show. Also, I often don’t watch the show directly, but instead put it on as background noise while I work. I usually put an episode on at 10:00 PM, then when it finishes at 11:30 I go right to bed.

As for routines, there are certain episodes, like “The Violent Years” or “The Deadly Mantis”, that for one reason or another I find myself enjoying more at night than during the day. In fact, I’d say that in general, I prefer Joel episodes for day viewing and Mike episodes for night viewing.

  32. Watch-out-for-Snakes says:

I started watching and taping MST during Season 6, back in 1994 and from then until 2010 I used to watch whatever episode felt right, for whatever mood I was in. I would watch with friends sometimes, but usually alone, and sometimes I would go through huge lulls of not watching (months sometimes) before breaking the seal and watching nothing but MST…

In 2010, I started to watch along with the weekly Episode Guide here at the website with Season 9 (I had been checking in here to read the weekly Episode Guide since, I dunno…forever?) and at first I was squeezing other episodes inbetween, but soon I was watching nothing but Seasons 9 and 10, although I skipped a few episodes of those seasons….

SO starting at the end of July 2010, I’ve been working my way through the show chronologically (starting with KTMA04), something I have never done before, and I have been limiting myself to ONE episode a week, keeping up with the weekly Episode Guide. My only allowance has been Christmas time, when I watch SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS every year (and occasionally SANTA CLAUS as well).

I watch about 98% of my episodes alone, usually on Wednesday nights, and I take lots of notes. My fiancé is not really a fan of the show, something I’ve been working on for the 6 years we’ve been together (she’s damn perfect otherwise), and while she’s had fun and laughs at Rifftrax LIVE shows I’ve taken her to, watching MST at the house…usually she’s not into it. Which is fine, because I feel weird taking notes on the show when I’m with someone anyway (lots of pausing, rewinding, making sure I got quotes right).

At the rate we are going with the Guide, I (and we) will be done in 2014 sometime, and after that….I’m not sure what my viewing habits will be… I can see myself starting the whole process over again, but possibly also maybe not.. we will see when we get there..

I don’t really have a pattern either.I can go through my collection and pick one out and realize there’s a host segment I may not like and will choose something else. When choosing,I may remember some of the riffs and choose it anyway because I like the episode or sometimes will choose something else instead. It depends on my mood.I like to watch an episode with popcorn or maybe some cookies and coffee, but not all the time..

  34. Troy says:

Our viewing pattern is more or less based around my own memory, host segments, and the Satellite News episode guide. Since we’ve easily watched every episode a good dozen times or more, when it feels like a MST3K night, I generally use the following strategy for picking our episode:

First, an arbitrary decision about whether we’re feeling like a Joel or Mike episode for the evening.
Then I scroll through Wikipedia’s List of Episodes, and see if anything pops out as being an episode we haven’t seen recently. (This is also useful for telling me which official set it’s on, whether I should look through my binder of DAP copies, or if it’s one that’s coming out on the next DVD set, in which case I give it a pass, so I can savor the experience later)

Once I have a vague idea of which episode I want, or if everything looks like an episode we’ve watched recently, then I head over to the episode guide, and take a quick look at the host segments.

My rule of thumb is this: If I don’t have a clear memory of what happened during the host segments, then that’s a good episode to rewatch.

This also means that the really stand-out episodes like Cave Dwellers and Space Mutiny tend to get held back as special treats, while less memorable Corman/Gordon plodders like Monster A-Go-Go, King Dinosaur and Earth Vs. The Spider get trotted out slightly more often, which is probably pretty close to how the original episodes were aired in repeat during the Comedy Central days.

For me, it’s Wednesday night viewing for the discussions here. I’ve gotten to where I don’t even watch the new Shout releases right away. I just replace the DAP DVD in my MST3K book with the official release and toss the packaging, which I never really liked. If I watch any riffing during the rest of the week, it’s usually Rifftrax.

Official MST3K snack: Microwave popcorn and Diet Pepsi.

Wow! Routines? Like I’m actually organized? No, I just go thru my collection of tapes and DVDs a couple times a week and pick whatever fits my whims. As a result, there are those episodes I’ve seen so many times it’s unhealthy, and those that sit at the bottom of the pile being very lonely.

About five years ago, I started to log the date I last watched an episode on an index card or post-in inside the DVD holder. As a rule, I try not to watch any episode twice in a 12 month period to avoid burning out my favorites such as Red Zone Cuba and Beast of Yucca Flats (yes, I’m a Coleman Francis man, sue me). I haven’t applied this system to any Rifftrax or CT movies yet. But I have integrated the Film Crew quadrilogy.

    It varies.

Usually try to watch based on what time of year it is, and try to watch them at the end of the day. Here are a few examples…

Daylight Saving Time Begins/Ends: Time Chasers
New Years Eve: Overdrawn at the Memory Bank
Christmas: Both Joel and Mike Santa movies
My Birthday: Space Mutiny (Same birthday as John Phillip Law – I think that’s his name.)
    New Years Day: Future War
    Easter: Pod People
Late July: Warrior of the Lost World (first time I saw it, possibly the only one I watched on its original air date.)
Month of October: Joel black-and white episodes

Sometimes I try to see the syndicated air dates of the episodes and try to watch the same ones that week. Usually do this with the Sci-fi ones because I started to watch the show again when I was an undergrad. It takes me back.

Lately I’m trying to watch them in episode order.

We always watch in Episode order, although the older we get the more concern I have that I won’t make it through all the seasons yet one more time (we try to do about an episode a week nowadays, although we have done as many as two or three).

Our tradition for eating and drinking we’ve mentioned before — once a month we have an eat in bed feast, where we get all sorts of decadent foods (mostly smoked like tuna, salmon and oysters, but also including finger things like olives, various cheeses — appropriate for many of these movies — and crackers, and top it all off with a good bottle of sparkling wine — Prosecco nowadays, although early on it was just Champagne). We get good and drunk and laugh our bottoms off.

However… that tradition has, with the advent of Rifftrax, mostly been an RT event, since those things are new and extra special. Every now and then we’ll do it with an MST3K episode, though. In either case, nothing improves the laughter by being well and truly inebriated (or, I guess for younger folks, intoxicated with other drugs, legal and not so legal).

All of this grew out of Sunday mornings pancake breakfasts where we used to watch the MST3K episode they showed the night before with our daughter. We didn’t use alcohol then, but as the family gathered around the table and stuffed our faces we laughed and enjoyed. I really miss my daughter watching with us — she’s on the other side of the country, and based on family and situation it’s unlikely we’ll ever sit down to laugh again in that fashion. But every now and then my wife and I will duplicate this Sunday morning ritual with MST3K only (no Rifftrax), and with waffles instead (yeah, I finally discovered how much I like them and now watching that particular MST3K episode is even funnier).

I started my own little “try to write a commentary of sorts on each episode” project a while ago, and in the course of it I wound up usually watching one episode a week, when I could, in the evening, hopscotching through the series and occasionally scheduling what I was getting to next by shaping my whims into a “mini-theme”. Now that I’ve said something about every episode, I’m not quite sure what pattern I’ll form next… perhaps I’m a little concerned about establishing “favourites” and “ones at the bottom of the pile.” Watching everything in order does feel just a little intimidating to me, though… although I’ll have the new official collection to open soon, so I can at least start there.

I watch an episode every night to fall asleep by, but I found making the choice each night was stressing me out so now I just go down the list in order (I am wound a little tight). This way I also get to see all of them, including the ones I never watched much before. Sometimes I turn the brightness down on the tv so I can fall asleep easier. I know them all by heart anyway, so I can close my eyes and picture what’s going on. The only trouble is that I see the beginning of the movies a million times, but I rarely see the end! I can’t watch RT to fall asleep because the volume has to be up loud to hear both audio tracks.

I usually have one playing in the background while I’m online, just for some background sound. It really comes in handy when I’m playing an online game.

#43: I can SO relate to seeing the beginning of a movie millions of times, but only rarely seeing the end. Indeed, we find ourselves regularly saying to each other, “you know, I swear I’ve never seen this scene before.”

Well, time for someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder to check in.

I don’t have all the episodes, but now a majority of them, and I watch episodes based on their original air date.

Along with that, I follow other orders, because I watch MST3K almost every day. My most recent order was based on what year the movie being riffed was originally released, starting with the 1940s, then moving into the 50s, 60s etc.

I also have an alphabetical by movie title list; like many posters here, an episode in order list; and I have other ideas like alternating from the beginning and the ending, and working my way in, e.g. Ep. 101, then 1013, then 102, then 1012…I think you get the picture.

Whatever order I use, it works for me, because there is always something in each episode that I love. “Sickness will surely take the mind, where minds don’t usually go”.

I like to be random….sometimes I’ll rifle through the dvds and find one that I have not watched in years…I do have plans to do a first episode to last episode viewing in the future…

Its 2 shows a day at night, I fall asleep to one wake up start another. But this Summer and a few times in the past I’ve been home from work sick for like a month or up to 3 months [this past Summer was end of May- 3rd.week of August] And I’d watch 3 or 4 a day/night. This past summer I watched the first season stuff a lot, like I fell in love with the early stuff I didn’t see as much when I started watching it around season two. The first season stuff is like old Beatles/Stones records, the lighting of the fuse sort of thing. Sure as the show progressed it got fine tuned, more polished, more riffs, sets, people involved. But I gotta say I feel good when I see the first season stuff, from a time when I as well as all the folks on the show were younger and I didn’t have all the health/ depression issues I have now at the soon to be old age of 56. [Dec.24th.] And out of all the season one stuff I watch THE CRAWLING EYE the most, and I can’t help but think about what a cool gig it was for the very young J.Elvis who because of his short time with the show he never got the time Kevin did to play Tom.
