Weekend Discussion Thread: Musical Covers

Alert reader Ted writes:

What song on the show, either a Best Brains original or a flavorless musical missive in one of the films (I’m looking at YOU Dick Contino), do you think might benefit from a cover treatment by a popular band/artist? My thoughts are Green Day punking up “Toobular Boobular Joy” or Fiona Apple getting moody and broody covering “Yipes Stripes” from #514 Teenage Strangler.

I’d like to hear what Elvis Costello could do with “Sodium.”

What’s your pick?

For total incomprehension, how about System of A Down singing “Idiot Control Now.”
For a more soulful sound, how about John Legend taking a crack at “Scuba Party.”
Shooter Jennings doing “Night Train to Mundo Fine.”
Carly Rae Jepsen (SP?) doing “Book of Love.”
Maroon 5 doing “Woman” (from Village of the Giants.”

The Rolling Stones still sort of exist. How about the ’60s
or ’70s Stones doing The Kinks “There’s a New World” from
Catalina Caper. Although they’d probably scare the bejeebers
out of those entitled fresh scrubbed young white folks. Of course, the
cast party with the Stones and Little Richard would be awesome.

If no one objects to my bringing up acappella groups (or even if they do), I would suggest The King’s Singers perform Aire on a Delta Knight, as well as the Bobs flesh out Let’s Have a Patrick Swayze Christmas.

I don’t know why, but I’d like to hear Michael Stipe sing all of Mary Beth Hughes’ songs from I Accuse My Parents. And have Billy Corigan sing Tom Servo’s hang glider theme (“Ator flies, and so does my heart….”) from Cave Dwellers.

I might be a jazz fan at heart (which is to say, I listen almost exclusively to jazz), but I also have to admit that I’m OLD–I haven’t actually heard some of the singers and groups some of you have mentioned!

Well, Hayseed Dixie already did a great cover of “Ace of Spades” from ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE. Strikes me that “A Danger to Myself and Others” would be right up their alley, too.

And the Reverend Horton Heat would be awsome for “Sidehackin’.” Or that “Losing My Dignity” tune in HELLCATS.

As for the HELLCATS theme, itself? Shonen Knife!

    @big61al (#22)

I’d say Shirley Bassey would be a better choice for “OK Connery”.

To show how old I am, Dennis Day would’ve been the obvious choice to cover “Sweet Mother of Mine”.

And I’m still wondering when they’ll approve an official release of Dave Alvin’s cover of the MST3K theme.

I’ll take a cue from Sampo here, because in my head I’ve got Elvis Costello crooning a heartbreaking rendition of “I Like What I Know about You” from Wild Rebels.

I’d also like to hear the Hives tear through the Bird’s “It’s Not What I Need You For” from The Deadly Bees.

And I’m pretty sure that I’ve already heard Deke Dickerson do a cover of Jimmy Bryant’s “Ha-So” from Skydivers.

I think it should be The Monkees (with hologram-Davy Jones) covering “There’s A New World” from Catalina Caper. And I love #1’s idea of Carly Rae Jepsen for “Book Of Love”, but I wonder how Grace Potter & The Nocturnals would do with it.

I think the Wild Rebels cereal song should be covered by George Thorogood

Joels Sidehackin song should be covered by the Dixie Chix

The Hike up your Pants song is definetly for Weird Al Yankovich

And the Pearl and Brain guy duet for pbs Loving lovers could maybe be a taylor swift cover

Danger! Death Ray! features a soundtrack (or at least they’ve needle-dropped music) that approximates real jazz. I would like to have heard a REAL jazz soundtrack (with Gil Evans, Herbie Hancock, and others). Of course, at that point they would have wanted to hire a different director, and bring in new writers, and get rid of the actual NOT-TOY helicopters and submarines, and then move the Castle so they could make a REAL movie, so forget I mentioned this.
