Hello, world!

As renewed interest in MST3K has grown over the past couple of years–and then increased exponentially in the last couple of weeks–we’ve heard from a few fans who’ve said various things to the effect of: “Dudes, your site is a Web 1.0 relic.”

To which we’ve always responded with a hearty: “Um, well, yeah.” See, that was sorta the point. When we were the official site of the show, we never really felt any pressure to upgrade, because we felt a low-tech site reflected the low-tech feel of the show.

And, let’s face it, for a few years there we were pretty much a museum to a long-cancelled show whose fans were draining away to zero. We didn’t really mind it…it was quiet and peaceful and Fred the nightwatchman used to tell such funny stories…but I digress. The point is that when you run a dusty museum, there’s not much pressure to be up-to-date.

Plus, we both have full-time jobs and re-doing a site takes time, dude.

Well, now there’s no longer any impetus to reflect the show so literally. And with all the new sources of MST3K-alumni funny coming our way, Erhardt and I quickly realized that we were going to need a news page that was going to allow us to respond more deftly, if we’re going to remain your No. 1 source for MST3K-related news. And we are, don’t worry.

So, with that, welcome to the new Satellite News news blog. RSS feed ‘n’ evrathang. The rest of the site is pretty much the same old stuff right now, but improvements are planned. As always, stay tuned.

Big ol’ kudos to Erhardt, who labored long and hard to bring this forth.

Oh, and we have turned comments on, for now. If people behave themselves, it’ll stay turned on, so play nice. :-)

  1. Allow me to be the first to say nice job, guys! Welcome to the 21st century, with its iPhones and fax machines and hoolahoops.

Looks good. Congratulations. I’ve been visiting here since … well, I don’t know how long. That’s how long I’ve been coming here.

I’m sure you’re working on it, but may I suggest updating the links panel on the left side, perhaps making(adding) Rifftrax, Cinematic Titanic, and MST3K.com larger and more prominent?

Comments are good. Selling bootlegs is not. Can we ban comments from people who are ripping BBI off, like Cheepnis is?

Although there was nothing wrong with the old site, the new one’s pretty snazzy. Just don’t go moving a lot of stuff around. I still sneak into Ward E every once in a while.

Great refresh of the design, and as has been already noted, the RSS feed is very much appreciated. Thanks for all the hard work over the years keeping us musty, crusty old timers up to date.

While I didn’t really think the site needed a redesign I’m glad you activated the comments. How did we ever live without them? Now Msties can actually communicate with each other!

(And why do I get the feeling that “anti-cheepnis” is probably a bitter guy who tries to sell copies of DAP downloads?)

I have seen the future! It is full of hot babes with purple, space-hair walking around in silver mini skirts, and streamlined, sexy web sites just like this one! The future is almost now! Wait, it is now! No, wait now it’s the present, but hang on for a few seconds. Yes, the future is now again! Oh, but the previous future is already the past. Uh … wha … ?

Nice job guys, the site looks great! I’m a long-time reader as well and will keep coming back no matter what the site looks like. Thanks for keeping us MSTies informed for so many years!

    Oh and … I want a coke.

Yuz dudez were the ones that kept hope alive all these years, and now, look how it’s paid off! KUDOS!

And really, php-nuking your site with RSS is the _good_ kind of upgrade — a tried, tested, and not-annoying one — as opposed to the disaster that is most “social networking.”

Oh and anti-cheepnis? Stop circulating your blood.

Love the website and have been a visitor for years. I check in pretty much everyday and really appreciate all your hard work over the years. It’s an exciting time to be a MSTie and with Satellite News we’ll be kept up to date.

Be careful tinkering around with the website though because all that jerking around might cause a flameout!

    Hmmm…

So really only the home page has changed then, right?

Absolutely no consistency with the rest of the site. No consistency = bad web design.

Just slapping a new cover on an old book doesn’t make it new, guys.

You should either make everything look consistent or you should have just left it alone. :(

  50. GersonK says:

kimmel, for my money, running a news site without offering permalinks to the articles or an rss feed is a bigger offense than a lack of consistency. Besides, the site has always had a certain mix and match feeling in its design. Some (like Ward-E, Daddy-O’s Drive In, and the bulletin board) much moreso. Doing the upgrade the “quick and dirty” way that gave the benefit of the new features without spending days of their lives upgrading archived content was totally in keeping with the site’s old school ethos.
