Weekend Discussion Thread: MST3K Monopoly? And more?

Alert reader Trevor asks:

Have you ever noticed how many different editions of Monopoly there are? Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a MST3K one?

Yes, it would! Maybe the spaces would be movies? Let’s hear your ideas. He also asks…

What products (besides t-shirts) would other MSTies like to have a MST3K version of?

Lots of budding entrepreneurs are listening….

    How about a MST3K DVD collector’s case,
like the one for hot-wheels when you were 7 or so.
To save room I put all my MST discs in a large 3-ring
binder. (I don’t have enough shelf space for the individual
    sets)

The problem with the binder is it is kind of floppy when you
have it out to look through for tonight’s selection.

As for the Monopoly game. . .I know I would keep getting
the “Go Directly To Valley Lodge, Do not pass the Theater, do not collect 200 hamdingers” card.

My bf and I thought about making our own MSTie Monopoly a while ago; it was fun to plan out but we never got farther than that. We were thinking that each space would be places from the movies… Diabolik’s lair, the Hitler building, Mitchell’s apartment, etc.
The chance & cc cards would be fun to make up, too. “You took the wrong temp job and have been shot into space. Go directly to the SOL; do not pass Go, do not collect $200”

The two spaces I would like to see as Boardwalk and Park Place? Diabolik’s Lair and Aaron Spelling’s House.

The MST3K Monopoly game – wow, what fun! I think you could use objects from the movies or ship as moving pieces. Instead of the thimble, iron, and so on, have the spaceship from Teenagers from Outer Space, Torgo’s cane/crutch, a martian, a nannite, and the SOL. Crow could be the guy on the Community Chest cars, and Servo on the Chance cards.

The equivalent of Boardwalk and Paark Place would be either the SOL, Deep13 and/or Castle Forrester, perhaps?

Other property would be The Undersea Kingdom, Max Keller’s van, the Master’s House, Daddyy-O’s gym, Tang’s cave, Metalluna, the Village of the Giants theater, SF International Airport, among others.

The chance/community chest could be coomercial sign/movie signs.

The game pieces could be the Time Chaser’s bike, a sidehacker, Mighty Jack, Gamera, Hercules/Sinbad’s boat.

Actually, not a bad idea at all.

I’ve got a much better game idea than MST3K Monopoly. MST3K Fluxx. What’s Fluxx, you ask? It’s a card game produced by Looney Labs where the rules always change (one person described it as being like a card game version of Calvinball). There are a bunch of themed Fluxx decks, including (and this is what got me thinking that an MST3K edition would be a good idea) a Monty Python version.

My one year old already is into MST3K (Well, at least the host segements and songs!), which got me thinking that they should come out with plushies of Tom, Crow and Gypsy! Neat, huh? And for the kid in all of us, Deep 13 footie pajamas for EVERYONE! What do you think, sirs?

I once made a MiSTie-Opoly out of a “Make-Your-Own-Opoly” game my parents got me when I was younger. It’s currently sitting in another house, but I’ll have to pick it up tonight when I go over there and list out what I made all the properties.

How about an MST3K cookbook? Recipes could include Johnny Longbow’s Stew, Jungle Goddess Char-Broiled Hamburger Sandwiches & French-Fried Potatoes, Mango Splunkies, Killer Shews, and Ram Chips.

I considered an MST3K chess set, but I’m not sure about it featuring characters from the show itself. There’d be a big argument over whether Joel or Mike should be king. A better idea would be one with movie characters, with Godzilla and Gamera as opposing kings.

I love all the ideas for a Monopoly game; figure it out, let me know where to buy one, and I’m in! (And instead of the railroads, have Coleman Francis/Tony Cardoza airplanes, please. Also, the beauty contest card can be based on the contest from The Brain that Wouldn’t Die.)

For other products, maybe an MST Candyland version, with Queen Pearl instead of Queen Frostina (and of course you’d have to keep Chocolate Lake and Molasses Swamp). Also, I would love a set of MST Christmas ornaments – Crow looks a little like a reindeer anyhow, and Servo would make a nice angel.

Oh, this is a good one. The GO space is MOVIE SIGN!!!!!, of course, then the cheap properties could be from some shorts, maybe, like The Undersea Kingdom, Uncle Whoever’s Dairy Farm, The GM Expo from Design For Dreaming, the circus from Here Comes The Circus, etc.. Free Parking has to be Coily saying NO SPRINGS!! I agree with AlbequerqueTurkey about the cards, I would love to see Crow and Tom in top hats and monocles. Game peices-Observer’s brain, the sol, Jerry and Sylvia together as one piece, Jet Jaguar, Gamera, Coily again, etc.

And I would love me some MST shotglasses.

Bobbleheads of the cast, MST PJ’s or “lounge pants” in Tom Servo, Gypsie, and Crow prints (bringing back the boxers would be neat – I still have mine, but I never wear them anymore ’cause I don’t want them to fade anymore in the wash), Crow and Tom Servo big-wheels for the kids, SOL Piñatas, and Crow, Tom, and Gypsie thumb drives.

I’ve enjoyed both Trace & Bill’s interpretations of Crow as a fashion critic in TIME OF THE APES & SPACE CHILDREN.

I thought a coffee table book on fashion by Crow would be a popular purchase.

Another approach would be Best Brains Monopoly. Each square represents a movie. If you land on it, you have to secure the rights from other players. Each time it’s shown, the price goes up. The cards could cover the business/legal dealings. Ex: “SciFi airs a promo! Earn #100” amd “Joe Don Baker sues! Lose $300” and maybe “Morrisey cries! Go to Jail!”

Action figures/statues would be nice… but I can’t believe nobody has said the obvious yet – official full-scale Crow and Tom puppets! My wife loves the show, we met through MST.. but she’s blind and has no real idea what Tom and Crow look like. I would love to have a ‘real’ Tom and Crow just to show her if nothing else.

Even if you change out most of the counters, you should keep the shoe in. To quote Crow (from Untamed Youth):
[character makes some remark about having a monopoly]
“Boardwalk. Park Place … and I’m using The Shoe.”

I’m usually dubious of the Monopoly knock-offs. The groupings by color are usually random and ad-based. For the show, they could be of similar shabbiness (Max Keller’s van & Doc Lockhart’s camper could be purples), genres/motifs (Castle of Fu Manchu and Castille’s Nice Piece of Real Estate could be the BW & PP), or film cycles (Nagata, Ophfecius, and Cassa Seven could be orange), etc.

Yes! Great topic! I’ll be thinking about this all day at work! If the board spaces are movies, then the ‘railroad spaces’ all have to be related…how about the four russo-finnish movies?!? Also, instead of hotels and houses, the top of the space is theater seats (since the spaces are movies) and you buy silhouettes to make the ‘movies’ more valuable….

Also, can we have mega-weapon as a game piece? This games gonna be one cool mama-jama…what-do-ya think sirs?

Do you suppose with about 200 episodes there is enough for a Trivial Pursuit version? Perhaps the six catagories could be: (1) Film (2) Television (3) Music (4) Science Fiction (5) People (6) References. The best I can think of.

Also, with so much pop culture peing converted to this item, it was only a matter of time: Lego Mst with the lego versions of Crow, Servo, Gypsy, Cambot, SOL, Deep 13, Castle Forrester, Gizmonic Institute, Widowmaker and the humans.

I could suggest MST Transformers, but what would they become? Crow an award statue or cow? Servo a fire hydrant or squat crimson pig? Cambot too obvious, and Gypsy? no idea.

  33. Given the state of the toy market (which is going through VERY hard times) it’s unlikely the MST3K license would ever be exploited, although it’s fun to dream.

The real problem is that someone with enough bucks to do it right isn’t likely to want to do it (because of small market share) and a small company who might want to do it won’t have the resources to do it right.

Although I have the Crow, Servo and Gypsy Sitting in front of me as I type, I’d love to see them done as poseable figures (with small “slinky” arms for Servo, movable arms and jaws for Crow, bendable neck and moveable mouth for Gypsy). And, of course, matching sixth scale figures of Joel, Mike, the mads, Pearl and brain guy (someone could kit bash the Dr. from the many Planet of Apes Hot Toys). And a great SOL diorama for posing while we’re at it. Never. Gonna. Happen.

I would see the colours as movie themes, as follows:

    Purple
    Mighty Jack
    Time of the Apes

    Lt Blue
    Gamera movies

    Pink
    Side Hackers/Wild Rebels/Hellcats

    Orange
    Hercules films

    Red
Double 007/Danger! Death Ray/Diabolik (Italian spy films)

    Yellow
Day the Earth Froze/Sinbad/Sword and the Dragon

    Green
    Coleman Francis

    Blue
    Space Mutiny
    Manos

    RRs
    Deep 13
    SOL
    Pearl’s VW
    Castle Forrester

    Utilities
    Comedy Central
    SciFi

Feel free to suggest other themes–there are many more (80’s ripoffs, Westerns, BIG films, &c.)

A chess set with the cast and favorite characters would be very cool but probably impossible. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to get the rights to mold chess pieces of Torgo, Krankor, Ortega, Pitch, Pumaman etc?
Maybe black velvet portraits of Dr. Forrester and TV’s Frank.

    Oh, I almost forgot:

“Free Parking” would be Torgo’s Pizza (’cause it takes forever to land on it!). You could even rig up a little chip that plays the Torgo theme when you hit the square.

    @ Speedy #32:

LEGO MST is a fantastic idea. I have one son who’s obsessed with LEGO–has all the Harry Potter and Star Wars sets–and he would absolutely go for this idea. An SOL set, a Deep 13 set, even a replica of the Gizmonic landscape in the Joel-era opening. Even MST minifigs would be a good place to start. Guess that’s not likely to happen in this universe.

There are 2 kings. Instead of Black & White the pieces could be Red & Blue with Joel as the Red King and Mike as the Blue King.

Another idea: since I know that Junk Drawer Organizers actually exist and are sold at Wal-Mart, how about officially-licensed MST3K inventions. The Squaremaster alone would bring in a bundle, as would the Collapsable Garbage Can and Bittersweet Hearts.

And they’ve got to do an official “5000-piece Fightin’ Men & Monster Set”. Most kids would sell their birthright for a cool item like that.

    @ Ken Toops (# 41)

True, but then you’ve got Joel & Mike opposing each other. It should be more Mike or Joel opposing Clay or Pearl Forrester.

Although, I suppose Joel could be King, with Mike as Capt. Janeway being Queen. Or maybe not…

I agree with the idea of having a chess set where Mike and Joel are facing off against the Mads. On the other hand, having Mike and Joel as opposing kings could help settle the “who’s the better host” debate. Instead of a rude flame war, you could have a civilized game of chess.
