Weekend Discussion Thread: Your Holed-Up Playlist

Back when a couple of hurricanes headed up the east coast, alert regular Joesph suggested:

I’ve got four of the five MST3K Versus Gamera movies not yet watched, so am in good shape for stuff to watch during the hurricane, if the power holds up. What MST3K movies are the ones to watch while waiting out a major weather event like a hurricane, blizzard, or anything else that just keeps you locked up at home for a couple days?

Okay, let’s assume you power isn’t an issue (say you have a really good generator). What’s the playlist? It can be whatever number of eps you want.

For me, I’m going to pick one ep from each season I always enjoy:

108- THE SLIME PEOPLE
208- LOST CONTINENT
307- DADDY-O
404- TEENAGERS FROM OUTER SPACE
505- MAGIC VOYAGE OF SINBAD
610- THE VIOLENT YEARS with short: YOUNG MAN’S FANCY
703- DEATHSTALKER AND THE WARRIORS FROM HELL
810- THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION
904- WEREWOLF
1001- SOULTAKER

What’s your pick?

These are the eps I watch most often, in no particular order:

Girl in Gold Boots, Red Zone Cuba, The Beast of Yucca Flats, Skydivers, Devil Fish, I Accuse My Parents, Teenage Strangler, Warrior of the Lost World, and The Crawling Eye. I would also include the Gamera box set as well.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the first Turkey Day marathon this year, I’d recreate that very marathon https://www.mst3kinfo.com/ward_e/Listturk.html including the bumpers which I’ve bought from Cheepnis.
Since I don’t figure on sitting through a hurricane any time soon in Wisconsin I will instead do it over the Thanksgiving weekend next month.

#6 – We interrupt this thread with a special historical news bulletin: Back in 1900, a major Hurricane struck Galveston, TX. It almost wiped the city completely off the map. The Hurricane then turned north, losing some, but not all, of its strength. It moved as far north as the Great Lakes, turned East, and then proceeded across the US and Canada before it finally hit ocean again.
Wisconsin is believed to be one of the places hit. So, it’s always possible…

We now resume our usual hijinx and nuttiness. Further historical weather bulletins as conditions warrant. :-)

Well, rather than just do a playlist of favorite episodes, I’d probably force myself to watch some eps that I usually overlook when looking for one to throw in or have only seen once-
    110-Robot Holocaust
    316-Gamera Vs. Zigra
    403-City Limits
    406-Attack Of The Giant Leeches
    519-Outlaw
    618-High School Big Shot
    818-Devil Doll
    905-The Deadly Bees
    1004-Future War

I didn’t want to put any favorites on this list, as I fear that anything I have even partially memorized would allow my mind to be distracted back to the storm or illness or whatever I was trying to ignore for awhile. Rest assured, all-time favorites and “desert island” lists would look very different. This was fun!!! :cigarette:

I always load MST3K or Rifftrax on the ol’ portable media player before a flight, and try to keep to a theme. They are pre loaded well in advance, to avoid last minute laziness. After seeing the Aaron Carter starring vehicle Supercross on a flight, I learned my lesson. The next one, I’m going for a black and white fest, with these ones:

    1. Earth vs. Spider
    2. Indestructible Man
    3. Wild World of Batwoman
    4. Jungle Goddess
    5. Amazing Transparent Man
    6. Killer Shrews
    7. Rebel Set
    8. Mole People
    9. Prince of Space
    10. Thing That Couldn’t Die
    11. Brute Man
    12. Devil’s Hand

A nice Joel & Mike mix, with enough riffing to last through both legs of a cross-country trip, and then some.

I think a consideration here is not just mst3000 movies you
like, but which are, for various reasons, engrossing for a
combination of movie plot, riffing, skits, etc.

    I have to go with

    1- Space Mutiny
    2-Time Chasers
3-Quest of the Delta Knights (if only to marvel at Tor’s inventive invention
abilities while gliding through King Ludwig’s Bavaria
4-The Eye Creatures (nice film noir feel to it)
    5-Spider Island (Babs and Co.)
    6-Prince of Space
7-Overdrawn at the Memory Bank (actually, like Time Chasers, an interesting
concept, granted could have been rewritten a tad, but it does take some paying
attention to the plot, which has interesting concepts)
8-Mitchell II: The Search for Maltese macho males (hey, a pretty good travelogue)
What, you don’t agree. Think you can take me. Go ahead…oh, never mind, where’s
    the buffet?
9-I accuse My Parents (hey, a hurricane’s here. Time for a musical).
10-Beginning of the End (although I can’t help but think Peter Graves is somehow
partially responsible for grasshoppers crawling all over postcards in the
    terrifying climax.

    6 – Master Ninja 2
7 – It Conquered The World
8 – Girl in Gold Boots
    9 – Indestructible Man
    10 – Boggy Creek 2

And, like everyone else, I could go on and on. Don’t have too many weather issues here in California, but every once in a while a drunk runs into a power pole.

    K21- The “Legend of Dinosaurs”
    111- Moon Zero Two
    212- Godzilla Vs. Megalon
    312- Gamera Vs. Guiron
    411- The Magic Sword
    502- Hercules
    622- Angels’ Revenge
    705- Escape 2000
    814- Riding with Death
    903- The Pumaman
    1013- Diabolik

That’s one from each season, but if I could add one more it would be “316- Gamera Vs. Zigra.” In fact, all of the Gamera Eps would be nice. While I’m at it, also add:

    211- First Spaceship On Venus
213- Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster
The rest of the season 3 Sandy Frank eps, plus the Master Ninja eps and Fu-Manchu.

    506- Eegah!

…and a few more of the KTMA eps:
    K09– Phase IV
    K10– Cosmic Princess
    K11– Humanoid Woman
    K13– SST: Death Flight
    K15– Superdome
K18– The Million Eyes Of Su-Maru

That should just about cover it for me.

Oh yeah, just one more thing. I would absolutely have to have the 1991 Thanksgiving Day marathon bumbers.

I guess a hurricane-themed playlist should have weather-dependent movies, so:

    Pod People (excessive fog)
    Snow Thrills (excessive snow)
Squirm (storm, excessive heat and worms)
Hercules Against the Moon Men (sandstorm)
Crash of the Moons (space lightning)
Attack of the Eye Creatures (daytime night-ness)
The Day the Earth Froze (freezing)

I guess I’d take the opportunity to work on episodes that I’ve struggled to enjoy in the past. I’ve always had a hard time with the pace of many season 1 episodes, and I often lose interest and turn them off. Maybe being snowbound without a giant hedge maze would get me to sit down and really focus.

I love this type of thread, with everyone helping me do the job of putting a list together. There are at least 2 or 3 that would be a perfect playlist for me. Me, I would probably do something like trios featuring a particular actor, e.g.:

The Alan Hale project: “The Crawling Eye”, “Angels Revenge” and “Giant Spider Invasion”.
The Beverly Garland bevy: “It Conquered The World”, “Swamp Diamonds” and “Gunslinger”.
The John Agar smarmfest: “Women Of The Prehistoric Planet”, “Revenge Of The Creature” and “Mole People”.

On a side note, I am watching the Michigan vs. Michigan State game, and the halftime report featured Robert Smith. As an example of how much MST3K (happily) infects my life, all I could think of was Pearl receiving Howard as a gift for Lawgiver Daze”, and as he was commentating all I could think of was Mary Jo exasperatingly exclaiming “Now what am I supposed to do with a sweaty, servile, well-oiled hunk?” Eyebrows raise as the light turns on over her head, fingers run up his bicep: “Oh, Howard…”

Hooray, my topic! I’m finally in the cool club!

My thoughts for this were that the movies should run toward the Big Disaster themes, so you can snuggle in with a cozy catastrophe. There seem to be fewer end-of-the-world movies than I’d expect, but, how’s this for a lineup:

    * Robot Monster (world destroyed, all destroyed, annoying kids survive)
    * Rocketship X-M (visit to the destroyed world of Mars, nobody survives)
    * The Day The Earth Froze (typical Minnesota April)
    * Invasion U.S.A. (the completely unnamed foreign land of evil and infinite resources destroys every city in the United States and all Montana — but what is it a diversion from?)
    * The Day The World Ended (the home game, and another after-the-end-of-the-world extremely tiny epic even by Roger Corman standards)
    * Invasion Of The Neptune Men (showing the world after all dignity is destroyed)
    * Squirm (showcasing a small southern town after, again, all dignity is destroyed)

That all should leave me ready to march out into the hurricane. What do you think, sirs?

I, on the other hand, would do something goofy like match the episodes to the weather. Let me see, which episodes had bad weather in them? Here’s a few I’ve thought of:

The Day the Earth Froze (blizzard)
Hercules Against the Moonmen (dust storm with added deep hurting)
The Killer Shrews & Gamera (hurricane)
Godzilla vs the Sea Monster & The Magic Voyage of Sinbad (Lots of thunderstorms, rain and, in the formers case, a lobster)
Lost Continent & The Black Scorpion (volcano…very homely in my case)

Then when the bad weather passed, I would watch Danger: Diabolik. Safe at home at last!!

For some reason, I couldn’t think of a Mike episode with bad weather. Did there just happen to be more bad weather episodes with Joel? I wonder. Or I could be drawing a blank for some reason. In that case, I’d add:

    Track of the Moonbeast
    Beginning of the End
    Invasion of the Neptune Men
    Beast of Yucca Flats

That way I could enjoy the company of Mike as well.
