Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite Gypsy Moments

I can’t believe we didn’t do this one, but it’s not on the list, as alert reader Matthew notes:

After rewatching The Unearthly for the featured episode, I found myself laughing hard at the ‘Appreciating Gypsy’ host segment. It got me thinking about what other Gypsy moments were so funny and which Gypsy moments do other MSTies find funny. My contribution is her telephone song (“I wish I had a thing with a thing on it and one of my friends would chat with MEEEE!”).

My favorite moment can be summed up in three words: “Gypsy crushes Joel!”

What’s your pick?

    Oh, so many wonderful moments.

    “Why is Richard Basehart God?”
    “I don’t know.”

Gypsy with a bad case of diode rash.

And so many others. Gypsy. She’s a keeper.

Oh, so many to choose from. I’m going to go with perhaps her finest hour (and a half) — when she saves Joel from not-so-certain death at the hands Frank and Dr. F.

    A few choice excerpts:

    “Howwwwwwww!?”

(Joel) “Gypsy, can you turn this racket off?”
    “Sure. Expulsion!”

If I may be forgiven for double posting so early in this great discussion thread, I realised I never really answered the question. You hit the nail on the head for me in your intro. When Tom and Crow did the “Appreciating Gypsy” sketch, where Tom narrates all Gypsy does for Crow, I love the montage of photos of Gypsy doing various tasks. I especially love the one where she’s giving Crow a bath, and the one where she’s outside the SOL in her hard hat and toolbelt. That whole segment is my favourite Gypsy bit. It shows just how integral she was.

In Wild, Wild World of Batwoman, her reaction to when Mike points out that Crow’s essay is identical to her’s. It’s clear from the lack of sarcasm when she says, “What are the odds of that happening?” that she fails to grasp that Crow cheated.

I love the bit in Hercules Unchained where the bots have made their own Roman set, complete with Joel peeling grapes for them and Gypsy entertains on the Roman ukelele and sings “Last night, last night, last night……I couldn’t get to sleep at all..” Very funny, at least to Sheriff Jeff.

“…but at Alpine Valley, they did “Lovelight” into “Sugaree” into “Dark Star” into “Lovelight” into “Sugaree” into “Lovelight” into “Dark Star” into “Sugaree” and then the moon came out and it was like Jerry willed it…”
The best thing was we had heard variations on this conversation in real life over the years.

Also, “Are You Happy in Your Work?”

There really are a lot of choices! But Gypsy being the sane one in the mirror universe of Last of the Wild Horses is my pick. She’s so sharp and together, and Tom is a perfect foil for her.

Also, Gypsy on the phone with Tom when he asks her for a date ala the short from Swamp Diamonds, both when he asks her out, and when he calls her after.

Easily the episode (Hercules And The Captive Women) where Gypsy goes into the theater with the boys to watch the movie, gets off one good joke, realizes the movie isn’t really that good, and then says she has a lot of stuff she needs to do and leaves. Close second would be her lip-synching “Are You Happy In Your Work?” from I Accuse My Parents. Also, her backing vocals on “Idiot Control Now” and Hired! The Musical (“ZEEEERO!”) helped make those two bits the classics they are. And of course, we must mention “Gypsy Rose Me” and her rendition of “What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor?” from The Movie. I’m sure I’m forgetting something classic, but that’s what springs to mind.

Yep, Santa conq Martians, her mouth. Very warm moment for the show.

I’ve always enjoyed her moment in the theater in Hercules and the Captive Women (Woman, Everybody). The whole dynamic cracks me up (with Servo constantly saying that she’s “not down with the street”), but then she gets in that one great joke: “They’re steam cleaning the horses.”

I also love the moments that have so far been mentioned–and I look forward to being reminded of more!

    You were enjoyed, Gypsy.

  16. In a sketch from “Manos” Gypsy plays a crooked sheriff who pulls over Joel, Tom and Crow complete with cowboy hat and a holstered gun attached to her coil. she shows up making a siren sound and when the camera pulled out to show her I laughed VERY loud! She speaks with a southern accent “My-my-my! What do we have here? A bunch of Yankee trouble makers! I’m-a gonna have to bring you in!”. Gypsy even “spits” tabacco complete with “ping” sounds!

Of course there was the classic “Gypsy Express” sketch from “The Gunslinger” where poor Crow is attached to her with a saddle. She makes loud horse sounds and when she “gallops away” Crow says, over and over, “owie! owie!”. At one point Joel even feeds Gypsy a carrot!

If my buddy and I want to make each other laugh, we just text “my my my, what do we have here. *patoey*” to each other. I also love her being the singer in I Accuse My Parents. Also, I use in my real life “I want to watch Dr. Jane Seymour, Medicine Quinn.”

The two that come to my mind are:
    1. Gypsy “running” onto the bridge to save Tom/Crow, all the while screaming “My babies!”
    2. When Mike and the bots wallpaper the bridge. Gypsy’s building reaction is great.

I like her brief bits in MST3K: The Movie: her chat with Mike at the start (how often do we see the two just talk like that?), her steering the SOL, and her matter-of-fact “I’ll take care of this” at the end of the Hubble sketch.

In “Mitchell”, when Gypsy reads the lips of the Mads, like computer HAL did in 2001, A Space Odyssey. She thinks they are going to kill Joel and finds an escape pod for him in a box marked Hamdingers.

  25. Absolutely loved in “Bloodlust” her telling off Mother Forrester and capping it off with “I see where he gets i from now. I’m tempted to call her something that rhymes with _itch.” I loved her shock response to actually saying the word. Priceless Gypsy.

    My two favorites:

Are You Happy In Your Work really is a group effort I suppose, but it just showcases her talents so well.

In Mitchell, Joel and the boys head off on an outward bound expedition, leaving Bypsy to push the button, which she accidentally knocks off the table. The defeated tone as she says “Oooh!” is priceless.

Gotta agree with #12, and I would add Gypsy’s backup vocals on “Only Love Pads the Film” at the end of Sidehackers, and Gypsy’s awesome minivan from Master Ninja, complete with a stack of Richard Basehart ventriloquil dummies.

Although it’s not as polished as later….

I love KTMA’s “Gypsy gets over her cold”. The way she keeps snuggling up to Joel and Joel’s obvious confusion, beaumusement and discomfort with the whole thing cracks me up. Although technically that one’s a tag-team with Servo.

But for warm fuzzy moments, nothing really beats the Nativity Scene in her mouth from “SCCTM”.

I like Dr. Gypsy in EEGAH (“And how are we today? Oh, what a nice big boy you are! He’s toast. See you post-op!”). I also like the quick moment at the end of the opening host segment in (I think) DEADLY MANTIS where Gypsy asks Crow if she’s done. Crow: Yeah, you can knock off for the day. Oh, and the first Oscars special, where Gypsy is their correspondent:

Crow: Where are you, and what Hollywood star do you have with you today?

Gypsy: I’m in my room, and I’m alone.

Tom: Uh, well, I expect there’ll be some stars stopping by there any time!

Gypsy: No, and I would consider that very unusual if it did happen.

Oh, and of course, WILD REBELS. “I’m in it for the kicks!”

Interesting that in the Comedy Central years there was only a single episode without Gypsy (FIRE MAIDENS OF OUTER SPACE) but in the sci-fi channel years there were several episodes with no Gypsy (…I can’t think of any examples, though. Can anyone else?)

Thanks so much for featuring my topic, I didn’t think that it’d get chosen.

Some of my other favorite Gypsy moments has to be from Untamed Youth, when she couldn’t stop spitting up cotton, paper towels and Tom Servos, her contributions in the Hired! musical (“ZEEEEEEEEROS!”), her becoming artistic in The Creeping Terror (“YOU, THE WHITE MAN, ARE MY OPPRESSOR!”), her reaction to Crow’s cheating (“Remember, my gumball-headed friend, violence begets violence.” “Gypsy, he copied your paper.” “…FRY HIM! FRY HIM! I WANT HIM DEAD! I WANT HIS FAMILY DEAD AND HIS HOUSE BURNT TO THE GROUND!”) and what she would do if she was 50 feet tall (“I would take my head…and wear it as a hat.”).

Number 11 mentioned the ‘mirror mirror” episode (611, Last of the Wild Horses) for Gypsy being the sane one and holding things all together for the crew, and I concur.
But she also had her evil double as well, when she tried to seduce sane Tom Servo to mutiny and take Mike out of the picture.
Gypsy “I WILL be a Captains woman!”
    ———–
    And I loved this exchange—–
Gypsy: “It’s a dangerous game we play, Tom”
Tom Servo: “You mean like Jarts?”
