Updated: Gamera Set ‘Under Review’ on Amazon

We’re not sure why, but Amazon has halted sales of the “MST3K vs. Gamera” DVD set and is currently listing it as “under review.” We’re working to find out what the situation is. In the meantime, the set is still available from Shout! Factory at this link.

Update: As some people have guessed, the review notice is due to one or more persons either receiving damaged merchandise or placing some other complaint. Shout! is working to resolve the situation with Amazon.

Update Again: The situation has been resolved and Amazon is once again selling the set at this link.

Hope this doesn’t become question of movie rights.

Strange that a problem with rights would come up so quick. I would think they would have it all worked out after what happened with Godzilla. I usally don’t preorder, but I might be glad I did. Hopefully everyone that wants a set can get one if something bad does happen and they are selling for huge$ used.

UGH! What now? Clearly with all five Gamera episodes it one package and Gamera featured on the tin box the rights issues should have been all worked out prior to being released. I can only imagine if it involves Sandy Frank. It was his dubbing we heard on the show…maybe he is claiming he still owns the rights to that. Who knows?

    Item Under Review
While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it’s described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We’re working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

Got mine at Best Buy. Have also seen it at Barnes And Noble and FYE. If you can’t get it online, I’m sure at least one of these chains still has it.

Could it be a production issue – as in, too many “damaged” items are being returned?

Seeing as how I’m watching the Gamera pentalogy on Netflix streaming right now, it would seem that rights would not be the issue.

I’m guessing that if Shout is still selling it that we should all “really just re-lax”. Probably just some weird Amazon glitch…

Hmm, so I could have something that could equal enough money on the secondary market to do a trade for the OOP Vol 10.1?

I was also surprised to see the Gamera films were already on Netflix, almost a week after I got the set for $40 at Best Buy.

  19. Yeah, but it also tells folks “Don’t wait”.

If you’re going to buy something (and I mean you really are going to buy it, not “well, if the price comes down to a certain point I might pick it up but it’s no big deal either way”) then why wait? Life is short.

I’ve never regret the things I’ve done, only the things I haven’t done (luckily this isn’t one of them — I pre-ordered and got it from Amazon on Day One).

Maybe they’re finally “reviewing” their packaging and will start shipping it with enough protection to keep the tin from getting damaged in the future? (I had to return my first set because the tin was dented.)

    Let’s hope.

    @14 Cubby

Was thinking the same thing. I had to return XVI like two or three times. I’m not super finicky but they were pretty crunched on the corners, I actually thought they were used at first.

I can tell you exactly why Amazon has got this set under review. They are shipping it in a cardboard container that fits exactly around the collector’s tin box with no air space cushion to allow for small amounts of crushing during shipment. The slightest impact on the outer box dents the collector’s tin and numerous customers have complained about it. I got lucky, mine arrived with no damage, but when I saw how they shipped it I had no problem understanding why some customers were complaining that their Gamera set showed up dented and deformed.

    I agree with hellokittee @ 15.

If there were rights issues, then why would the Shout! website still list it? I would think that when rights issues come up Shout! would then completely pull it from shelves. This appears to be an isolated issue within Amazon.

The rights holders would go directly to the producer (Shout!) and not the third-party distributor (Amazon) if they had an issue.

  29. Mr. B(ob) says:

There aren’t rights issues, it’s most likely a shipping issue. See my above post at #25. Here’s the text Amazon posted about this, I first noticed it yesterday.

“While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it’s described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

It seems to me as if this comes from the fact that Amazon is shipping them out poorly and they are getting dented. Mine was dented, but it wasn’t that big of an issue for me, so I kept it.

  31. I ordered it from Shout! today just in case. They only charge a bit more than amazon right now, they have free shipping for Labor Day (and no tax!) and are including a free MST3K stress ball and “Gamera” postcards. I decided that all was worth the risk of a lower amazon price later.

This is why I buy from physical stores when possible. It’s probably just a packaging issue anyway.

There might be something wrong with disc one(Gamera). Has anyone had any problems with Tom,Joel, and Crow looking blurry/fuzzy while they riff the movie? I’m not sure if that is normal but my other gamera movies don’t have this problem. My friend is experiencing the same problem with his Gamera disc one. Has anyone else noticed this problem with the first Gamera movie? I no longer have my original tape so i’m not sure if that is how it originally viewed.

That said, it’s best to pick up all these sets quickly.

It happens on Amazon now and then. About a month ago there was a lot of publicity around Amazon halting orders of the Nintendo 3DS for a day or two. If they get a lot of feedback involving issues with a product, they just have to look into it before it gets moving again.

I preordered mine from Amazon. There are no problems with it that I can see. The tin isn’t dented and the discs all play great. All the advertised extras are on the discs. Let’s hope this is temporary and other people can know the joys of Kenny and Cornjob and Tibby and all the rest.

I just noticed something on my Amazon wishlist a couple days ago with the exact same “under review” status. I’ve already forgotten what it was – another DVD boxset I think – but it’s already been fixed, so I imagine Volume XXI won’t be in limbo very long. Anyway, it’s definitely not a rights issue. Something to do with quality assurance.

The last time Amazon stiffed us on…(ahem) put a DVD item for review was when everybody complained about the Twilight Zone S1 Blu-ray.
I’m assuming some disk fans complained about some extras not being included (“Hey, wasn’t there supposed to be a Gamera figurine?”) or some technical problem–If it was rights, EVERY major outlet would have it pulled by now.

In the meantime, the Used/Indie sellers are allowed to sell their copies, which is good, since they’re the only ones who have it within an affordable price range. :(

  42. Cronkite Moonshot says:

This is not a recall like with Volume 10. If that were the case then it wouldn’t be available anywhere (well except places like ebay). It’s most definitely a shipping issue just with Amazon orders. My set that arrived from them right after the release date was packaged very flimsily and it was very easy to see how the tin box could have easily been crushed in shipping. Luckily mine arrived without damage, but if people are recieving it damaged because of Amazon’s poor packaging and then returning it, when that happens enough times it triggers a review process like this. They’d rather take the product down for a while and look into fixing the problem than have to keep dealing with constant returns and exchanges. This happened last year with the Stargate SG1 complete series DVD box set that I was looking into purchasing at the time, except that time it was because of the manufacturer not Amazon’s lazy packing of the product. Apparently the box that held the DVDs was very poorly designed and DVDs would easily become dislodged and roll around getting very damage during shipping. The reviews of the set were loaded with stories of it happening, and Amazon got so many returns that they took the set off the site for a while like this. If they pull their heads out of their butts and package the things a little better then it should all be fine. They used to be so good with packaging things securely and safely, even with the free shipping, but lately they’ve really dropped the ball and started packaging things very poorly. I order a lot of stuff from Amazon, and I haven’t gotten anything damaged, at least not enough that I wanted to return it, but the packaging quality has taken a serious dive over the last year or so, so now every time I get something from them and see how badly it was packed I get nervous and have to open it and check it over, fully expecting that this will be the time I have to return it because it got damaged. If they can’t simply package the things right to begin with then they deserve all the trouble and expense of having to deal with the returns and exchanges.

Sort of ironic that you can buy just one or two CDs and Amazon will ship them in a large box. I was one of the lucky ones to receive my Gamera box undamaged, not that I would have returned it. I’m definitely over the packaging thing.

    Well, fiddlesticks…

I went ahead and ordered it on Overstock, I’m not taking a chance that this could turn into another Volume 10 thing.

Thanks so much for this website, I remember when it came out about volume 10 I managed to get it for $55 (yes, more than I usually will pay, but better than over $100!)

Sandy Frank can still be involved; he’s probably lurking in the Amazon warehouse, kicking and shaking every copy he can get his hands on…
