Weekend Discussion Thread: Mixed Double Features

Alert regular Kenneth Morgan has a good suggestion:

CT/RT/MST Double Features: Come up with a double feature comprising one title from Cinematic Titanic or RiffTrax and one title from MST. I have two possibilities: first, “The Magic Sword” from MST and “Jack the Giant Killer” from RT. Both have similar tones and storylines, both feature over-the-top villains and less-than brilliant heroes, and both are actually pretty good, if pretty goofy, movies. Second, “The Leech Woman” from MST and “The Wasp Woman” from CT. Both feature women of a certain age who use less-than reputable means to retain youth and beauty, but pay for it big time.

I’m going to open it up even further and allow CT/RT double features, like a Don Dohler double feature of CT’s “The Alien Dactor” and RT’s “The Galaxy Invader.”

Would would you pick?

OOPS I GUESS THAT WOULDNT BE A DOUBLE FEATURE IF ITS 3 MOVIES. MAYBE THAT WOULD BE A TURKEY DAY MINI MARATHON?

I have a feeling I’ll be celebrating Turkey Day in Canada this year with a double feature of Final Sacrifice combined with the new Rifftrax release of Abraxas.

Though I haven’t seen it, I’d probably suggest RT’s “The Crater Lake Monster” with MST’s “Track of The Moon Beast”. Both ripe slices of 70s cheese (I think…)

Laura, Alien Factor was done by CT and is available on DVD. I grew up in Baltimore where the movie was filmed and I know some of the people who made the film.

#4 ALIEN FACTOR was also used in the opening credits to POD PEOPLE.

The only CT I’ve seen is WASP WOMAN so I’ll double it up with MST: I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF.

This is like watching ROUNDABOUT off of YESSONGS and OWNER OF A LONELY HEART off of 9012LIVE.

or ROGER WATERS performing ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL PART 2 and DAVID GILMOUR performing MONEY.

East Meets Watts from CT and The Final Sacrifice would make a good pairing with both movies featuring goofy main characters being brought together under unusual circumstances to fight the bad guys! Throw in RT Moose Baby short after The Final Sacrifice because…well just because.:-D

MST & Rifftrax double feature of “Santa Claus Conquers The Martians” since it was done by both.

CT Alien Factor and MST Pod People since both are goofy movies about goofier aliens.

Rifftrax- Reefer Madness and MST- I Accuse My Parents since both have a monkey on their backs.

Film Crew- Hollywood After Dark and MST- The Sinister Urge since both are seedy, unseemly and will probably require a shower afterwards.

CT- East Meets Watts and MST- Mitchell since both feature a doughy, ineffectual cop and bad fight scenes.

CT- The Wasp Woman and MST- The Deadly Bees because it stings.

@19: I’m reasonably sure it was CT who redid SCCtM and not Rifftrax.

Ed Wood double feature with Bride of the Monster (MST) and Plan 9 (Rifftrax).

And for a Nubile Young Women Kidnapped by Bela Lugosi for Nefarious Purposes Double Feature, there’s The Corpse Vanishes (MST) and Voodoo Man (Rifftrax).

“Manos” c/w “Voodoo Man” by RiffTrax.

Both have villain cult leaders with goofy robes with hand motifs. Both cults are working to defeat death. Both have endless driving scenes and cars that won’t start as plot points. Both have weird musical themes– Torgo’s and then the silly drum-and-sing-along. Both have a bevy of brides in billowy gowns. Both have ineffectual male leads who get tapped once and are knocked out of the action. Both have law officers pretty much lying down on the job. Both have deities with names that can’t be said with a straight face: Manos and Drambuna.

I’d make a cocktail of shorts: RT’s “Shake Hands with Danger” with MST’s “Days of Our Years” for some bloody, bone-crunching, accident-loving action.

CT:The Oozing Skull & MST:The Brain That Wouldn’t Die; Both have car crashes, evil plots by doctors.
TFC: Killers From Space & MST: The Crawling Eye; The EYES have it. OUCH, I just got punched by Joel!
RT:Voodoo Man & MST:The Corpse Vanishes; Bela Legosi using women to bring new life to his bride.

Unfortunately, combining Joel-era MST3K titles with RT titles has been a little too easy as of late… ;)
Magic Sword and JtGK being only one example.

  33. SuperSwift says:

How about a SUPER DUPER double feature about super heroes. Rifftrax proudly presents “Superman IV the Quest for Peace”. And our 2nd attraction Cinematic Titanic will mock “Supergirl” with Faye Dunaway as the evil super witch. Talk about getting a super headache…

Team up MST3K’s “Time of the Apes” with that disturbing bicycle saftey short that RT did. You know, the one whith the kids riding around while wearing ape masks!

  35. OldCharlie55 says:

How about a “what were they thinking?” double feature with RT’s “Maniac” and MST3K’s “The Incredibly Strange Creatures…”. Toss in the Film Crew’s “Wild Women of Wongo” for a triple dose of WTF-ery.

Or, how about a double-meltdown from the usually cool and suave Kevin Murphy? First, watch as, after surviving a bout with Rogi-Panty Complex, Tom Servo is driven completely over the edge by the incessant use of stock footage in MST3K’s “Invasion of the Neptune Men”. Then listen as Kevin takes Mike and Bill hostage and threatens to “start throwing bodies out” if the organ music in RT’s “Carnival of Souls” doesn’t stop.

I’ll just go with my favorite of each:

    Rifftrax: Brdemic
    CT: Alien Factor
MST3K: Master Ninja I and II (I can’t choose between them)

I also echo the Double Dohler pairing of Galaxy Invader (which I just watched the other night and it was hilarious) and Alien Factor.

CT’s Legacy of Blood followed by Manos. Because after the soul destroying ickiness of Legacy of Blood I would want to watch something light, cheerful, and life affirming. (Legacy of Blood made me feel so bad that Manos would be a relief in comparison)

I’d proceed those with Rifftrax’s Courtesy Counts A Lot, just because I feel like inflicting that level of deep hurting upon myself right now.

I read through #5 and stopped. I half agree with him, but I would pair RT’s “Crater Lake Monster” with “The Legend of Boggy Creek.” I haven’t seen “The Crater Lake Monster” yet, placing it at the end of our yearly rotation, but anticipate doing so before Christmas.

  44. Michael Howe says:

I’d go for The Touch of Satan (MST3K), and Blood of the Vampires (CT).

After all, both feature families that have a hellishly-controlled family member that noone ever things of offing until it’s too late.

As well, I’d pair Squirm (MST3K) with Rattlers(CT). I wish they’d release Rattlers on DVD. That definitely had me laughing hard.

And on a final note, Pod People (MST3K) with The Alien Factor (CT).

I’ve not seen any CINEMATIC TITANIC and I’ve only seen a few RIFFTRAX. From what I’ve seen, I would pair:

The CHRISTMAS SHORTS EXTRAVAGANZA with SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS –(A new tradition!)

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL with TORMENTED! –(Seems to make sense to me!)

JACK THE GIANT KILLER with JACK FROST –(Have yourself a Jack-off! Um, no, wait, err..that’s not what I meant..uh..)

A few more MST3K/Rifftrax Double Feature ideas:

-Bride of the Monster/Plan 9 from Outer Space (the worst of Ed Wood)
-Mr. B Natural/Magical Disappearing Money (the last women you’d ever want to meet)
-Overdrawn at the Memory Bank/Casablanca (the original classic and the film that uses it a major plot point)

  48. Fred Burroughs says:

@46 Klemm: You could do that Christmas marathon, but I’m afraid your brain would be mush; after that I’m afraid you’d only be fit for government service.

@47 Klemm: “the original classic”: to which movie are you referring?
