BURBANK, Calif. -- Kay E. Kuter, a career character actor who is perhaps best remembered for his long-running supporting role as farmer Newt Kiley on the CBS rural sitcoms "Green Acres" and "Petticoat Junction," died here of pulmonary complications November 12. MSTies will remember him for a role early in his career as a priest in the movie in episode 803- THE MOLE PEOPLE. He was 78.

Born to a show business family (he was the son of pioneer motion picture art director Leo "K" Kuter and silent-screen actress Evelyn Edler) he studied at Pomona College and UCLA, and graduated from what is now Carnegie Mellon University.

During his 55-year career, Kuter directed more than 50 plays and appeared in about 200 stage productions, 50 films and 435 TV shows.
