You-know-what may have finally frozen over. TVGuide.com is reporting that Universal will be re-releasing Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie on DVD on May 6th. While we haven’t received confirmation of this ourselves, this news comes from our old friend David Lambert, TVGuide.com Content Contributor and News Director of TVShowsOnDVD.com, so we’re pretty confident of its accuracy.
The new DVD will once again be a bare-bones release, with only the original theatrical trailer thrown in as an extra. But it’s reported that the movie itself will be a new anamorphic widescreen transfer with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix and a French Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track. There will also be English subtitles. As always, we’ll post updates as we learn more.
This is shaping up to be an interesting year for MST3K fans!
Thanks once again to David Lambert for the heads-up.
Update: I questioned David about the DVD being released on May 8, which is a Thursday. He double-checked and verified that the actual date is May 6. Both this article and his original one have been corrected.
Whoo-Hoo!!! First “Duckman”, now this! If “Fernwood 2 Night” would ever be released, my life would be complete!
GREAT news for MSTies everywhere!
Anamorphic MST3K OHHH YEAH…….
Now if only Universal would come to their senses and start releasing
Blu-Ray version. But this is a must have disc ,could be the LAST DVD i
ever purchase. The orginal was a nice transfer so this one should look
good, but they really should do the extended cut. I’m just never satified
i guess. My wife got me the Laser disc as a gag gift one christmas…..
SOL in 5.1 WOOHOO…..
THIS is one of the many reasons why Satellite News is one of my first internet checks of the day!
This is GREAT NEWS!!! I’m so glad I came to my senses and chose NOT buy one at auction for $120.
I want to know more about the Giant Gila Monster single disc and Volume 13 :)
Finally!
Finadamnly. I got the sucker on VHS, and endlessly worry about it snapping or warping or all the things that can go wrong with age there. Of course, I’m KEEPING the VHS afterwards, but still. The movie served me well on the nights I used to work at the video store… and it got rented out many a time having been up on the big screen with people going “what is that? It’s hilarious!”
Jeeze, I finally broke down and bought the German DVD. At least this is anamorphic, I’ll probably buy it again.
I am severly hoping for deleted scenes.
Finally, my friend can stop lording his original release DVD over me!
Um… so is anyone else a little curious about the French Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track thing?
? “Vue normale! Vue normale! VUE NORMALE!!!!” ?
Ahhh you know whats good about good news? The fact that it’s good. This is exactly the kind of stuff I need to hear more of.
Donalds only use for the word comb!
Would have been nice to see the deleted scenes on it maybe but a proper rerelease is most welcome. Obviously Universal are reacting to all the other riff based projects popularity and getting their finger out.
Well, I wonder how much this will decrease the value of the original 1998 disc release. Well at least it’s a better transfer, ’cause the original releases transfer was pretty weak.
And too bad about no extra features. I guess the fan produced Special Edition/10th Anniversary Edition will have to do.
I never thought I’d see the day where the movie was re-released. I bought my DVD of the film on eBay just before the price became stupidly high and have never regretted it. I’ve been told a few times over the years that I should sell it for a profit, but I just can’t let it go. I even bought the VHS release way back when BBI was offering chunks of Deep 13 along with it. Now I’ll probably buy this new release as well. What can I say? I’m weak.
At least you all have the regular studio released versions. I actually have a VHS copy I taped off of Showtime or HBO, can’t remember which. I never even got the fancy Universal VHS tape. Talk about worried about something breaking or wearing out.
May 8th cannot be the correct date, folks – it’s a Thursday, and release days are Tuesdays. But it is about damn time that Universal wised up that there may be a little coin to be made by reissuing MST3K The Movie.
english sub-titles??
Not everybody has the ability to hear.
I see!
WHAT????
Hurry up to buy the old ones for $200 before the price goes down!
Electric Bozo,
Yes, I wondered about the Thursday release date, too. After some double-checking, David determined that the actual release date is May 6.
Edit some more jokes in!
Maybe universal will allow rhino to publish some of the other Mst3k titles they have too…Maybe other studios will do the same…Maybe every episode will one day be available!! One can dream.
There is hope, I guess, that if this bare-bones version sells well, they could release a more attractively filled-up disc later on.
Yes, that would be a double-dip, but I wouldn’t mind.
MST3K The Movie’s deleted scenes:

What a waste. They need to release the extended cut with all the deleted scenes. The movie is just way too short after they cut so much out.
Nice. Now, to hunt down the Theme Song that never was… that was a great rendition of the theme.
I’ll upgrade from my videotape. Bought it at the tail end of its availability. Never even considered buying the DVD (too costly), but was always on the lookout for the laserdisc on the cheap. While not perfect (I’d like a few extras, please), this one’ll do just fine.
Again with the bare-bones, eh?
Anamorphic, shmanamorphic–it deserves a
proper special edition treatment.
Hell, I didn’t even know there WERE deleted scenes to be had! (Thanks for sharing, Brandon) Having seen that, it’s a real shame they have no intentions of including them and other bonus material on the new DVD. I wonder if it’s too late to write Universal and ask for it, (not that they’d listen, but it never hurts to ask)?
I got two copies of the movie, and I’m STILL gonna buy this when it comes out. Can’t they PLEASE included the deleted scenes? please, please, please, please, please, please!
Word around the campfire is that the deleted scenes no longer exist. Destroyed by Universal. (NOT Mallon.) Can anyone confirm this?
I am going to pre-order that baby as soon as possible!!!
I love MST3K, but have to wonder at how much you guys whine about every little thing? Finally getting a DVD release…no extras..so what! As my 6 year old says “You get what you get, and don’t throw a fit”. Quit whining like some whipped puppy. Next thing you know you guys are going to be crying about the re-release of Vol. 10 with one new film….oh wait you’ve already moped around about that one too on another thread. Get over it guys, and enjoy this MST3K renaissance while it lasts.
If you guys go to Sci-Fi conventions, I’d recommend looking for the 10th Anniversary Hamdinger Edition of the film. It’s a 2 disc fan produced special edition of The Movie with all kinda of neat stuff (On set interviews, cut scenes, even the Lost Theme). I got one a few years back and its utterly awesome. :D
I also bought the German copy which is REALLY cool. It has a whole bunch of extras and a second disc of the uncut version of “This Island Earth”. The problem? I can ONLY play it on my computer. Now I can finally have a DVD copy to play on my TV, even if it doesn’t have all the extras.
Say, why doesn’t Best Brains just put out a disc of the deleted scenes if Universal won’t?
Excellent! It’s about f*cking time that Universal reissued this. It’ll be great to have a new transfer too. But I REALLY wish the deleted scenes were going to be on there. They’re incredibly awesome, the storm-shelter scene is so much fun… and someone thought it would be a good idea to cut it!?
It would be nice if MSTies could get together and send Universal letters and phone calls asking to get the deleted scenes on there… but it doesn’t seem like the community has that spirit anymore.
Best Brains can’t release the deleted scenes because they are owned by Universal (unless they could somehow license the scenes as “clips”, but I really doubt that would ever happen).
It is a long shot, but if the sales of this DVD are high enough maybe Universal will realize there is a market for an extended cut with extras. So tell your friends, co-workers, people you hate, the mob, and anyone else you can think of to buy a copy or two…
Yeah, lets just buy all the copies now and then when Universal “finds out” that the movie is in demand, they’ll re-release it with the extras included and sell it to us (and on sale if we buy it early enough).
The Hollywood Reporter has a story that Shout! Factory has picked up the rights to DVD and digital download versions of Mystery Science Theater 3000. That much is believable, but the article they have claims that Shout! will offer “all” episodes, which has got to be a reporter’s misunderstanding of the fascinating rights issues involved:

Agree with the other commenters. Universal is just dipping its toe in the water right now. That’s why a standard DVD release with no extras. If sales goes throught the roof, we’ll see a special edition/director’s cut. But not until then.
Re: So tell your friends, co-workers
One of my friends, doesn’t have co-workers.
Hmmmm, This is ace for the folk who don’t own it already because it kicks out those scalping b’stards who hike up the price of the old DVD.
I have the dvd already (and the VHS and bloody laserdisc) so I’d only buy it again if it had the deleted scenes.
So, why I’m here is errrrr, Mr RevRaven, I live in the U.K. and conventions featuring MST3K are darn hard to come by (plus I’m a hermit!) now, is there any way you can copy said 2 disc hamdinger version for a donation to a worthy cause such as yourself?! Wink wink!
This is great news! I own the VHS version, but have wanted to get a DVD version…did you guys know that the VHS version has some kind of copy protection….or so I’ve,…been told, not that I would ever try…to…ahem. Good news.
Perhaps that Shout! Factory making ALL the episodes available means that they’ll all be downloadable. Download rights aren’t the same as dvd rights. Maybe Shout! Factory has amazing connections in the industry and WILL be able to sell all the episodes on dvd. I just hope they’re not going to release episodes that Rhino have already released. That would SUCK. I could see that happening too.
I’ll have no problem rebuying this DVD for the anamorphic treatment. Very good news!
DVD Empire has it up for pre-order:
