SEOUL — A veteran Korean film director best known for his melodrama hit “Barefooted Youth” in the 1960s, died Sept. 7 after battling lung cancer. He was 83.
MSTies will recall that he directed the movie in episode 1109: YONGARY, MONSTER FROM THE DEEP.
Thanks to Tim for the heads up.
would he be the first of the new season people to die?
He’s the first one I know about…
What a strange milestone to reach. Still, makes the new season feel that much more official.
If he hadn’t died, this would be the perfect time to make jokes about his name. I always wondered if western names in Korean/ Chinese ever sound like slang words or synonyms for private parts. That would be a hearty laugh at our expense; Yongary wasn’t a good movie, but it was beautifully photographed and the MST3K print was flawless, compared to the washed-out looking Godzilla/Gamera pictures.
