OCCCIDENTAL, CALIF. — Robert Nichols, a singer, dancer and actor who enjoyed a 70-year career on stage, television and in movies, died at his home here March 21. He was 88. MSTies will fondly remember his earnest performance as nerdy Joe Wilson in “This Island Earth,” which was featured in “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.”
Here’s a terrific obit which ends with:
No services will be held because Nichols’ friends are either deceased or live far away and “an actor needs a full house,” his wife said.
R.I.P., Robert. (I really did love your performance in This Island Earth.)
Could I love him more?
Please see my remark under “This Date in MSTory 29 March 2013” about the death of Catalina Caper actor Peter Duryea.
An actor needs a full house.
It says so much, yet I’m speechless.
Robert Nichols…Yet another star added to the constellation MST3K. :star:
rest well in peace [standing ovation applause]
Weanie man away. Rest in peace Mr. Nichols. :(
He really did stand out in a number of his performances. Watch his work in The Thing. He was part of a great cast. Rest in peace Mr. Nichols. You made the world a little better for being here.
I’m going to curl up in his sock drawer and sleep for days.
No actor could’ve delivered that ridiculous “moth with a lightning bug” line any better.
Cal im begging you please dont go!..Cal,cal wait im stuck..ahhh!!..:( RIP
There goes one stupid..stupid man (from MST3K The Movie). R.I.P. Robert and thank you.
Robert was also in THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD. RIP
The world won’t be the same without Nerdy Joe. RIP, thank you for making your mark in cinema history.
Craft services were held today for Robert Nichols.
“I’m in one of these boxes, world, find me.”
Sorry. RIP.
“Plug it in Joe” R.I.P
I’m glad Cal never found his gun. R.I.P. Mr. Nichols.
Rest in peace Weenie Man, you and Carl are now together in that big, mutant ridden Metaluna in the sky.
He delivered one of my favorite lines, and one that I surprising find a lot of uses for: “All that jerking around must have caused a flame out.” R.I.P. Nerdy Joe.
DAMN DAMN DAMN. You know, just the other day I discovered this guy was still alive. I toyed with the idea of writing him, just to say he was remembered fondly. But I don’t write letters to celebrities, and where would you send it, anyway, and then I had to go to work and stuff…
I got a big batch o’ Perry Mason DVDs earlier this year, and the other day I saw Nichols doing a very small part in a season 2 episode. “Dude!” I thought. “You were in The Thing and then in This Island Earth, and now you’re doing this tiny part? Is there no justice??” Well, no, there isn’t.
His part in The Thing wasn’t very extensive, but he really sold it. (This was also true of his tiny part on Perry.)
Goodbye, my friend. You were enjoyed.
Services were held and are still being held for Nichols’ friends at https://www.mst3kinfo.com
Rest easy, Joe…
He really did an amazing job acting in The Thing From Another World. He was a key part of it.
