RIP Richard Dawson

Barely on topic: Richard Dawson, briefly imitated by Crow in a host segment in episode 502- HERCULES, has died. He was 79. The L.A. Times has a story here.
By the way, of the seven celebrities Crow impersonated in that sketch, only Betty White and Fannie Flagg are still with us.

I always thought he seemed like a decent guy. I loved him in “The Running Man”. The Rifftrax presents of it was particularly funny, despite not being by Mike, Kevin and Bill(blasphemy!)

I love the fact the picture you chose of Richard is from the “School Riot” episode of Match Game. Either that or ‘Cuckoo ____” would be my favourite segment in the show’s run.

But, alas, I must correct you. Despite the fact it was spelled “Fanny” frequently when she was the punchline for a question, her name is spelled ‘Fannie’.

Another great Richard Dawson memory is from his other hit game show, Family Feud.

Richard: Name a month during pregnancy when a woman begins to show.
    Contestant: September.
**Richard stops the clock … and then totally loses it.**

His performance in Running Man was fantastic, kind of a trashing of the whole game show host part of his career.

I remember seeing a clip from an interview [post retiring] and he basically was grateful to have been blessed with a long career and was thought of fondly by so many fans. Real humble, seem to be a nice guy.

I watched ‘Hogan`s Heroes’ as a kid and loved that show. ‘Corporal Newkirk’ was my favorite character of Hogan`s crew, and Richard Dawson clearly had a ball as the multi-talented British con man.

Down the road in years, ‘Hogan`s Heroes’ lost it`s luster for me….The show seemed a disservice to all those who actually fought the Nazis, because the truth is that the Nazis were NOT easily gulled buffoons, and Hogan and his men would likely have been lined up against a wall and shot the first time they pulled one of their schemes around Gestapo Major Hochstetter…(To this day, I still prefer ‘Mchale`s Navy’, where the Japanese are portrayed as dangerous, but the real enemy is The Brass!)

But…I also have found out that all the main Nazi officers in ‘Hogan`s Heroes’ were portrayed by Jewish actors….Some of them, Jews who had in fact, actually been held in Concentration Camps by the Nazis…
‘Hogan`s Heroes’ gave them the ultimate revenge on The Nazis; ENDURING RIDICULE.

As John Banner said of the paradox of his ‘Sgt. Schultz’ role; “Who can play Nazis better than us Jews?”

    R.I.P. Richard…
If you were anything like Newkirk, you probably have a card game going on some cloud right now…

I assume the Schultz role was a takeoff on William Holden’s Stalag 17 (where a similarly physical Schultz was anything but a buffoon). Actually the scariest character in the movie.
